Atlanta Motorsports Park (AMP) Karting - 9/24/17

  • Hit up AMP today to get some practice in before the October 10-hour enduro. I only included the first half of the race as the last half was spent pretty much by myself. Ran a 68.5 this go-round but my next two runs were somehow slower due to the disparity in the performance of their karts. I'm praying the AMP mechanics fine tune everything before next month, because 10 hours is a long enduro to spend in karts that potentially may not be up to task. After all, these Sodi RT8s have seen better days so ultimately it'd be great to see a brand new fleet out there. The staff is great, they seem to run things really well there, but considering they run leagues and enduros frequently, I would imagine the regulars know the performers from the ones to stay away from.

    The standard of a naturally flowing mini racing track. This is art.

      AMP is definitely my favorite outdoor karting location. The entire track is GREAT for racing (as opposed to other tracks where the racing might only be good in certain sections or sometimes not at all).

    The cameras do not give that drop justice. I race Lo206 here but got to do a session in my dads shifter kart(swapped seats so I can fit we run the same chassis size but my waist is smaller). In the shifter kart you catch air its so scary but so fun too.
    Quick tip: The best place to gain time are the kink and the drop. People chicken out in them but if you push just a little bit more in the drop you can gain 3-4 places up the hill or 2-3 out the kink.

    I dont know why people go to andretti karting when u can race in a real track !!! Wow cool

    • @PepperDarlington
      @PepperDarlington ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We rented Andretti for a private corporate event in 2018. For the last two races, they let us run ungoverned. You have no idea how fun that track is with ungoverned electric cars. That being said, a weekend in Dahlonega with one day at this track looks to make for a badass weekend.

      @PepperDarlington I went to the Marietta Andretti's years ago and their "top speed" was not fast at all. I even asked the race controller afterward if there was another higher programmable speed but he said no. So who knows if he was telling the truth or if they just had their karts programmed to lower RPMs, but my experience at the Roswell Andretti's was far better in that respect.

    I love an hour away from this place and I'm interested in trying it out. What's the best times to go for having a lot of people on the track, and what's the best deals to get?

    • @fortressofsoliddudes4597
      @fortressofsoliddudes4597  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you're wanting a lot of people on track, the downside to that is there is going to be a longer wait time. The best thing to do is bring friends out at a slower time, but if that's not an option and you're just there by yourself and wanting to race with other people, I would go afternoon on a Friday or early on a Saturday or Sunday, that way you're racing with people but it's probably not crowded yet.

    Interesting about the kart disparities. I guess I'll stick with GoPro motorplex for the time being for enduros. I need to get down there to drive that circuit though.

      It's a great track, for sure, but they desperately need a new fleet. I hate to complain because I really want to like them more and I realize not every kart is going to feel the same by any stretch but I feel the differences are instantly noticeable and that shouldn't be the case.

      Glad they got new karts, as some of the other comments mentioned. I noticed the disparity when I was there a while back, and it's a bummer to get passed on a long straight after you've been topped out for a few seconds.

    (TLDR: small smudge with barrier costs $50, just get the insurance and have fun) The only thing that really bothered me is that I missed the braking point and barely, just barely, scratched the barrier. If you are planning to go, I suggest to buy the $7-or so insurance because without visual damage it costed me $50! And my brother and friends crashed hard into the barriers but didn’t get punished because the marshals didn’t see them. Having a small insurance coverage makes you mfs feel comfortable to push the car though.

    Great video! My friends and I will also be competing in the endure next month. I'll be there in 2 weeks to practice. What class are you running?

    • @fortressofsoliddudes4597
      @fortressofsoliddudes4597  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Norris I wasn't aware they split it up into classes... Last year I had to leave early so I wasn't around for the podium ceremonies or anything. But I think our lightest guy is around the 120-130 mark, so I'm sure we'll be in the lightest class they have if that's the case.

    • @retinalblur
      @retinalblur 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, there are only two classes. Light and Heavy. Light is 175lbs minimum, so if you are under, you will have to add seat weight that is provided to get to 175. Heavy is 200 minimum. We will have 2 light teams and one heavy from Memphis. Also, went to your page and saw the awesome Dodge Viper as your banner cover. I have one up too! My fav car in the world.

      Michael Norris Well, fingers crossed that I can make it out. May have some work obligations that would interfere. But if I do, just look for a group of average white dudes with average white helmets, cause that's prolly us!

    1:26 so i have been here and this turn looks kinda scary on video but it is very scary apparently it is the most extreme turn on any kart track in the world it also doesn't help it was my first time karting 😬also my brother crashed into a tire wall going too fast in that turn 😂

  • @retinalblur

    Hey Wes, I got an email from AMP saying they are expanding the karting area and also, they got a new fleet of Sodi RT8s. Not sure if these are what you drove, but come race day, we could all be in brand new karts!

    • @fortressofsoliddudes4597
      @fortressofsoliddudes4597  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Norris I got that email too and I was pumped to hear it! And then I was given the news yesterday that I absolutely have to work that day so AMP is unfortunately a no-go for me unless some sort of strange magic happens. Pretty bummed about it because my team is doing a sort of semi-promotional video for AMP that I was going to be a part of (not sure of all the details to be honest), so if you see camera equipment and all that jazz, that's them. Feel free to talk to those guys, they're all great dudes. I'm still committed to the Full Throttle enduro series up in Cincinnati starting this month and those are a lot of fun, so if you haven't been there it's definitely worth checking out.

      @retinalblur 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh man, what a bummer! Thanks for the tip. I'll be on the lookout for your friends. Never heard of the Full Throttle series, but will check it out. Maybe the magic WILL happen and you can compete next weekend!

    Paying $35 for one RT8 heat to reach speeds of 55 mph is a bit much. This seems to be the norm at various facilities as rental karting becomes more expensive across the United States. My local track at NOLA also charges $35 for the same 12 hp karts.
    Are the kart differences are that drastic here? This would make me reconsider competing in future leagues and enduros because the winning team may end up taking first place because of having the best kart rotation and not display the best overall skill. Those endurance team events cost over $1000 per team; the karts need it equal so that team members do not feel cheated by the karts given by employees running this 10 hour event.

    • @fortressofsoliddudes4597
      @fortressofsoliddudes4597  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      LONE WOLF 1 I'll put it this way: My first heat I ran a 68.5, all the while re- familiarizing myself with the track. My next two heats were at the 70 second mark - a whole second and a half off pace - with a mostly empty track and braking points figured out. If I'm going to be completely honest, I wouldn't recommend doing an enduro here until they either get on the ball and start getting some work done on these karts or they get a new fleet. I was excited about the upcoming enduro but after racing yesterday I'm still looking forward to it but I remember these were the same complaints I had here last year.

      This track makes money off real race karts. The rentals are more for little brothers/sisters and moms/dads that dont race but want to feel included. Im not bagging on the rentals because it can be really fun but they are not the main money makers at AMP. Try their kart training. They put you in a real chassis like a Praga/OTK/CRG kart. Thats really fun or if you have some really think karting is for you try the Lo206 class its the best entry class. They are all stock and use pump gas and hard tires. Its what I do and they are plenty fast. Plus the class is very popular and race weekends you can see 25-30 guys per age group just in Lo206.
