    Only thing that comforts me about this situation is Matt Olson is a excellent player and he is from Atlanta. So he's coming home to play, out of all possibilities if had to have it happen. This is who I would want to take 1st base in Atlanta.

    (Edit) Ok, after getting over my emotions, I know AA has not let us down before and he seemed hurt as well. I just thought Freddie was our next Chipper. I’m going to miss Freddie and I happy he was a Braves for this long and won a WS with the Braves. I hate seeing Freddie go and he was a great leader.
      That being said this could very well be the right move. Olson, statistically was better last year, he’s younger and from a financial standpoint less expensive. Signing Freddie to a mega deal would’ve created an inflexible payroll situation, while this allows for greater flexibility. Giving up 2 bluechip prospects hurts though.

    How much money does one dude need? Freddie could have retired a brave, but he had to squeeze every penny out of the Braves, likely hurting our future. I give AA a ton of credit for sticking to five years, and not going above. It tells me Freddie didn't want to come back to Atlanta. Props to AA, and welcome to Atlanta, Matt!

    • @hamricmike8
      @hamricmike8 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He did want to come back and he would have taken less money if they gave him 6 years and they wouldn't. That's not how you treat your franchise player and face of the organization. Would you turn down a job for way more money with a longer contract because the employees liked you? Freddie isn't the bad guy here.

    • @Mitch-zr4wb
      @Mitch-zr4wb 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@hamricmike8 a lot of players take team friendly deals. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see how paying a 40 year old first basemen would hamstring the franchise, while also needing to sign important young players.
      Had Freddie wanted to stay in Atlanta, he would have signed a deal. He didn't. If Atlanta was my home, where I had played by entire career, and wanted to retire as a lifelong brave, a sixth year wouldn't stand in the way of getting a deal done. The fact that the Braves traded away so much young talent, before Freddie signed, shows how firm he is on his demands, and how unwilling AA was in mortgaging the future.
      The Braves did what was best for the Braves today, tomorrow, and five years from now.
      Freddie isn't a bad guy, but let's not pretend he wanted to be a brave. Had he, he would've signed well before now. Freddie is either selfish, or not the Braves loyalist we all thought he was. I suspect it's the latter.

    It's too early to tell.. we can speculate all we want. Sure, Olson is a great statistical replacement for someone like Freeman.. but... is he going to have the same locker room impact for these younger kids like Acuna and Albies that Freeman had? No knock on Olson, but Freeman is/was the leader of this team and a team is only as strong as it's leader. The potential of a major league prospect panning out is incredibly low. Its always possible you gave up a future super star but that's apart of the business. Braves made a good deal in my opinion. The Braves are not hurting in the OF with Michael Harris, Trey Harris and Drew Waters. Pache can't hit and that hurt his value. Maybe he sorts it out but with the log jam at OF in their system it was a good move. Losing Shea is the one I wish we could have kept. But again there is no guarantee he becomes a super star catcher. The Braves just got a All Star caliber 1st baseman and now have the money they offered Freddie to sign another big name potentially.
