BROADMOOR ESCAPE SIRENS working perfectly!! {{Beware: LOUD VIDEO!}}

  • Here we have two sirens recorded on different days. Both activate at 10am on a Monday. I've added a 30 second off-set (see each siren's actual time on the bottom left/bottom right).
    It's much better to illustrate in the video like this, else they would both be starting up at the same time. Recording them with a 30 second off-set allows you to see each stage, one siren at a time.
    Both sirens in this video are working perfectly. Most of the other ones either don't work at all (during my visits) or have a fault with one of the shutters - either one is jammed open or shut.
    \/\/\
    • SIRENS - Finding the 1...
    (this video is SIREN H and SIREN I)
    /\/\/
    ABOUT THE SIRENS:
    Here are two sirens from a system containing 13. They are located in the neighbouring towns surrounding a secure hospital in the UK.
    Me and Chay went out to find them all - this is now complete. See all my other videos here:
    • SIRENS - Finding the 1... )
    It was a very interesting bank holiday Monday lol! Chay was a bit apprehensive while waiting for the first siren to sound, but loved it afterwards :)
    He liked it enough to stay with me whilst tracked them all down.
    It was a good day as we did other things like play football in the parks, McDonalds and see the sirens of course!
    It was a mixed bag - some viewable from the street, some hidden so much that you'd never know they were there (unless it went off!), some in council depots, compounds, parks and believe it or not - in the middle of housing estates metres from houses! (would scare the living daylights out of residents if they went off at 3am!)
    Some are in secure places with no access at all.
    The sirens are tested at 10am each Monday.
    I have recorded most of them in action (lots of Monday's@10am!) - in this video there are two of them.
    BY THE WAY - In reality all 13 sirens are tested together, but so that you can see each stage (start-up, running, running-down) of each siren, I have offset the sirens by about 30 seconds (see the times in the bottom left and right in the video).
    HOW THEY WORK:
    The Klaxon CS8 siren.
    A 415volt 3 phase motor spins two rotors on either side. One rotor is for the high tone and the other for the low tone (the one with most holes is the HIGH tone).
    During the escape siren, the airflow is cut alternately to each rotor by a shutter on each end producing the distinctive high-low tones. I believe these are known as CODED SHUTTERS - hence the model name Klaxon "CS"8.
    Both shutters are opened together for the all clear tone. You can just make out the high and low frequencies being produced together if you listen.

      @@gsmooth4279 they only went off on Monday morning for a test. As far as I remember if someone escaped the siren would have sounded until they were caught, and then there was a different tone sounded when they were found

      @the_alex_ellis_channel6923 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      These sirens were never used in the war actually. They were brand new in 1952. The difference between these sirens and WWII sirens is the dampers on the ends that produce the Hi-Lo sound.
      Because of the cold war, there was always the possibility that Air Raid Sirens could need use in the future. Broadmoor couldn't have sirens that made the same sound as air raid sirens, becuase that would cause mass confusion - people wouldn't know if the sirens were for a broadmoor escape or an air raid. They had to use dampers in order to ensure that their sirens made a different noise/tone to an air raid siren.

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +broken solar panel I'm not 100% what is doing the timing here. On a different video I had one camera on a tripod filming the camera whilst I was with the other camera at the bottom of the siren tower at the control boxes. I was expecting to hear a relay or contactor switching on and off operating each shutter probably wired to a flasher circuit. Once the main contactor fired the control box was silent.

    • @the_alex_ellis_channel6923
      @the_alex_ellis_channel6923 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Due to the laws of physics, the lower pitch sound travels better over distance than the high-pitch tone. The high-tone shutter is deliberately left open for longer then the low-tone shutter to compensate for this.

    In these old UK Civil Defense Information Bulletins, they were talking about Gray Warnings (fallout arriving in an hour) and I think they used CS 8s like this one to make a pulse tone.

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Benjamin Fuller Not heard of the pulsed tone before but I suppose it's possible by closing both shutters at the same time then opening again repeatedly.

    • @the_alex_ellis_channel6923
      @the_alex_ellis_channel6923 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The whole point of Broadmoor using the CS8 was make sure that their sirens sounded different from Air Raid sirens.
      Civil Defense used multiple different ways to warn for fallout including bangs, whistles and dongs, according to the Protect and survive films made in 1978. I don't recall seeing anything alluding to Klaxon CS8's.

    • @racer927
      @racer927 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's because they dropped the Gray Warning between the Civil Defense Information Bulletins and Protect & Survive. A pulsed tone was meant to warn of fallout arriving in about an hour as a Gray Warning while Black Warnings, fallout imminent, was given by gongs, whistles and maroon rockets.

    • @SolidSableye
      @SolidSableye 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Broadmoor actually used to use the pulsed tone from the first time they tested to sometime in the 1960s before switching to Hi-Lo

I suppose now, they could be adapted to work over the GSM network of course, but back then it was a copper cable from siren to hospital control room :)

    It is absolutely criminal that they have decomissioned these. I honestly don't believe (having seen the siren K autopsy video) that these cost much to maintain. A simple electromagnet, a motor and some switch gear. Understandably the motors might burnout over time, but I bet most are original. Now it will be social media or text message to tell you someone is on the run! I think they might live to regret removing these.

      Well, then if I lived there and heard these sirens go off at any time other than 10:00 am on a Monday, I would make sure all my doors and windows were locked. There are some in San Francisco, California USA that are leftover air-raid sirens from WWII. They are now also tested every Monday at 10:00 am and would sound in the case of a tsunami, earthquake, or any other reason that an emergency alert would be sounded on the local radio system (ie. a kidnapped kid).

    Do you know if these are capable of wailing? I know they are never use it but is it theoretically possible

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think by the term wailing, are you referring to the "ramping up and down" of the rotor speed? I think this is what you mean, adjusting the motor speed to create this effect. As they are now, no. The motor in the middle is switched on, it goes up to full speed and the two tones are created by the shutters over the air-intakes on each rotor. One rotor does high, the other does low. But it would be theorestically possible, but you'd need some kind of motor speed controller to do it (VFD variable frequency drive).

    • @childishtombino1275
      @childishtombino1275 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      mrmattandmrchay mrmattandmrchay You wouldn't need a VFD... without the shutters closing on the wind down (motor shut off) the rotors still have a lot of momentum and would keep rolling for about a minute or two. But with the shutters there is no air resistance or barely any so the momentum lasts about 5 mins. The red alert signal (wailing) is possible on these sirens but you'd need to either manually switch the motor on and off or get another controller as the one that comes with it is not compatible.

      Broadmoor couldn't have used a wailing tone becuase if the cold war had turned into WW3 then the wailing tone would've been needed for air raids.

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Roman TBoman If you are asking "if it's possible" then some, yes, indeed you can although you'd have to get into the siren enclosure first. One at the Traffic Depot one in Bagshot doesn't have an official 'enclosure'. Most of the tower hatches are open at the top of the ladder as well.However, due to the nature of these sirens (being connected to Broadmoor) I'm sure that the police would be very interested to arrest anyone that did climb the tower for "tampering with a secure hospital security siren!". It would probably be treated seriously. Members of the public would probably report it as well if they saw anyone up there.If you are asking "me" to climb the tower, then I won't be doing that as I'd lost my job if I picked up a criminal record for doing so :) I do some dodgy stuff, but I wouldn't climb up to one of these in clear view of everyone.

    What is the point in these sirens? Just asking

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** These are all in towns surrounding Broadmoor hospital (google it) - this place is not a prison, but it contains the most dangerous people in the country that, due to their condition, cannot be put into a prison. It's essentially a high security hospital with some dangerous people inside. During the 1960s someone escaped and killed some people in the nearby town. The public were really concerned, so these sirens were installed to warn people if someone escapes. The most recent escape was in 2001 I think. Security is very tight now with massive improvements (inner and outer boundary fences, etc) so really the sirens are not really needed anymore. There is a new hospital being built which is due to open in 2019, so these sirens will be decommissioned. Nevertheless, currently they are tested 10am on Mondays.

    +Amelia Violet I have to be prepared with tripods and a plan of what I'm going to film.
    Normally involves my main camera zoomed into the siren and recording on a second camera to give additional views - makes the edited version more interesting to watch.
    They are "fairly" loud, I don't mean that you have to cover your ears though.
