Hahahaha! Thanks for The Sun Eater recommendation. Soon you'll become the master again, don't worry. 😂 Hope you enjoy Priest of Gallows! You will see me killed there!
I’m in Detroit and the Draft has been so crazy here. So many of my students missed school this week to attend. How cool for them as it is usually too far away to attend. It’s also been cool to see so many TikTok-ER’s experiencing Detroit because of it. As someone who has lived here all my life it’s so great to see Detroit getting so much good press!
Hey Mike, just wanted to say I’m about 70% done with Gone With The Wind thanks to your recommendation! This is totally not my style and way out of left field for me but I have to say I’m definitely enjoying it. But wow Scarlett is one crazy character! She surprises me every chapter hahaha
I loved the Shogun series. I am glad that the final episode did tie together several of those threads that were left undone in the middle episodes. I do agree, episode 9 was fantastic.
Lonesome Dove was definitely an all timer when Streets of Laredo came out. LD won the Pulitzer for fiction and was a big time best seller. Streets didn't come out until 8 years later so definitely took some balls to go back to that story.
finished Ryan Cahil's of blood and fire, good stuff. Finally finished Lonesome Dove after that, a whole book about nothing much. Loved every page of it! Not sure what to read next, picking up the novellas of Cahil. Shogun show was great so might go pick up the book
I am also a big fan of doing last books/episodes in series together, that often makes a finale so much more epic because of the full immersion for me! Can't wait to hear your thoughts on the ending of the War for the Rose Throne. Also, I really think The Vanished Birds could surprise you in a nice way, looking forward to the start of that book club! Happy reading Mike ☺
Always love your weekly update! Good to see that you seem to be getting your reading mojo back! I’m looking forward to reading Lonesome Dove and Shogun once I get to them! Right now I’m reading Dark Age! It will probably take me all of next week to finish. Loving it so far!
Right now I’m trying to decide between Assassin’s Apprentice, The Dragonbone Chair and Empire of Silence. I have a feeling it’s going to be Sun Eater though.
There is something magical about writing and reading. I know how it feels to read a great book. It's something that's incomparable to other mediums. I am new with the author thing, but I hope that my work feels the same to others as it does to me when people read it. You need a fistable Why Files mug, Mike! Thinner was such a fun movie it has to be a good book. Please announce your future live show so I can get a notification. You have some fun lives and a rare person who can read the chat and not let the comments distract their line of thinking. Logan was a great movie. That's one movie I can say that did the girl boss trope to perfection.
"up there with Stephen King" - that's rare praise for you. Dang it, I might have to read Lonesome Dove :D And I too enjoyed the NFL draft. Might be the first draft the Cardinals have had that I've been excited about in a long time. Lastly, I'm kind of glad that Disney decided to let Deadpool be THE Marvel movie this year. It's going to get to shine on it's own before we're back to 4 movies a year :D

I've yet to read LD because I started in chronological order, and I absolutely loved DMW and CM. The first one is a great unforgiving adventure, and the second one is a very weird adventure. Really interesting characters and the way they perceive what is happening.
Im currently reading howling dark by Christopher ruoccichio im taking my time with it It happened one summer by tessa bailey saving 6 by chloe Walsh This weekend im watching the final episodes of queen of tears i absolutely love this show
Glad to see McMurtry wasn’t a one-hit wonder for you! I need to try him out-you did not steer me wrong with another beefy slow-paced hist-fix epic tome in Shogun! I just finished Fool’s Assassin and loved it-my favorite Hobb book 1 easily!
I loved the Shogun tv show & now I am waiting for the audiobook on my library app. Usually the longest wait is a few weeks, Shogun is a few months! Reminds me of trying to get a GOT book from the library when the show blew up. Do not forget to read Daughter of the Empire! Shogun meets GOT! No need to read the Magician first.
Finished The Stand, that was a masterpiece for sure, finished Legend from gemmell that wasn’t bad, then I’ll be finishing first book in the Han Solo trilogy that’s been a blast, and then I’ll finally be starting Red Rising, super pumped for that.
I finally finished Dune and i think it was great but i prefer the movies a little more. I think Dune is so influential that it feels a little familiar for someone of my generation. But the films add a little modernisation to make it feel fresh to me personally. I also read Guards! Guards!, great book. Scratched that Pratchett itch.
I just started Discworld myself with Colour of Magic last night and Only about 15% of the way through it and I love it So for all the people who say don't start there I can't wait for the books that are supposed to be better
Reading Peril's Gate, Wars of Light and Shadow Book 6, and I like it the most I think. I'm slowly watching Ergo Proxy an episode a night 4 nights a week. Trying to finally finish the Cyberpunk replay I've been working on since December so I can play Eiyuden Chronicle, the Suikoden spiritual successor.
@@mikesbookreviews I have been pretty mixed on it actually, to the point I made a comment about my struggles with it and A.P. made a whole video addressing my criticisms of it, which was a little embarrassing. I think it a very well written series, but for the central premise and pillar it rests upon, it’s easy for there to be a disconnect between what you feel and what you know, as well as between what you expect and what you get. I’m liking book 6 the most because it’s finally giving me what I’ve wanted for much of the series, so I think this will be the first one I give 5 stars.
I still have McMurtry on my list. Trying to get there! Disquiet Gods is definitely going to happen. Needed to wait for the Audio, but looking forward to it.
I’ve tried to read Black House twice. I just can’t get into the story. I hope you like it. As for Shogun, I loved the series. And now that my family bought the book for my birthday, I have to read it now!
I decided to pick up Executive Orders by Tom Clancy and In Cold Blood by Truman Capote this week. Enjoying both of them so far. Most of this week has just been getting used to my new hours at work. I have been on 2nd shift for almost 12 years, so getting used to day shift has been a bit of an adjustment.
I wanted to give up on Talisman. Then i found out the Dutch translation was so so so bad. So i read the English e-book. And it turned out to a favorite!
I also spent way too much time watching draft coverage. It does look like my Steelers had a decent draft. Still not sure how to feel about our QB situation. I just finished up Philips last book today!
I just finished The Stand and I am still reeling. I really was thinking that I wouldnt like it, that it would be too scary that it was woo long...NOPE! it was amazing. I loved all of it, every chapter. I wish it was longer. I read it because it was part of the extensive Dark Tower List and I am on my first journey to the Tower. Next is Eyes of the Dragon and then The Talisman and I am looking forward to both!
I think what Larry did with Newt (won't spoil it for anyone, just read the book if you haven't) was a reaction to the TV sequel and series he had nothing to do with. That said, I did enjoy Streets of Laredo. I do think it functions as more of an epilogue to Lonesome Dove, and that's not a bad thing at all. Lets face it, trying to follow up Lonesome Dove is almost an impossible task. That was a walk off, game winning grand slam of a novel.
Not gonna lie, i know Shogun was about the characters and the political game, but i would LOVE to see the actual Sekigahara battle. Still best show of the year.
I made the mistake of using The Color of Magic as my starting point for Discworld. I didn't end up liking it. It wasn't until later I was told by others that it isn't a good starting point. 😅
The Shogun finale was perfect. Toranaga was able to win the war with the least amount of casualties possible. It was a game of intelligence and he was good at it. Very Art of War.

Mike, did you read Shogun? Respect for the source material? While I thought it was an alright show, you cannot say that it followed the book at all. The 1980, Richard Chamberlain series was a faithful adaptation for the book. So many scenes in the new series were just made up and not for the better. The book is an all time favourite and this show did not do it justice. Be well, stay safe.
