Black Metal songs with parts without distortion, or with acoustic guitars, sounds really good. I think both can coexist to create this atmospheric, empty and dark feelings. This video is proof of that!
The right combination of both clean and distorted riffs here and there throughout a song is what make the listening experience so epic!
That's why deaths crystal mountain is so awesome it has extremely metal parts as well as classical acoustic and some clean sections

For me, black metal has always sounded best with no distortion, its like it makes the riffs even darker.
The clean versions sound like an ominous buildup to the chaos that is distorted versions

I'll be honest. As a guitarist I love to hear it distorted live, or at some gigs, but as a player I enjoy it soooo much clean. That is when you know you can play the actual riff correctly :) Cheers 🥳
Clean brings out the atmospheric beauty, and distorted + the drum track is why we're all here \m/

Snow day today so I came back to listen with better headphones and clean or distorted, it's all heavy as hell. Agreed with the commenter that said both are there to compliment one another. The clean creates a dark atmosphere vibe that's royally bad ass.

Clean makes it more mysterious and horror movie like, not to mention helps to hear every note separately, when with distorsion some notes harder to hear than the other

What black metal,playing these with clean undistorted sound are the perfect songs to play for all the family members in the christmass dinner and everybody will be happy cause the boy can really play well indeed.Some chords maybe are sounding a lot more draculized than the usuals but the overall impression remains good.
you should try doing the clean metal of any kind with some kind of ethnic drums, like a cajon, to make it even more folk sounding lol

i don't think one or the other is necessarily right/better. 20 years ago i would be 100% for distortion, nowadays i prefer clean. but even in this video, 3:03 is clean and it sucks. it's not even a guitar, it's a ******* balalaika. and then 5:24 it's distorted and it's awesome. i kid you not, i almost came. subscribed and liked!
Great work! Out of interest, when you record these, do you record twice with two different sounds, or do you just record a dry signal and then apply two different effects in post?
Thank you. I recorded them twice. There are differences in the playing style when playing clean or distorted. Palm muting, for example, is something I barely ever use when playing clean, and it's mandatory with distortion.
@@LeonardoLux96 thanks for the reply! I figured this would probably be the case. Certainly adds another dimension to learning, practicing and recording riffs.
