H/H match update: ... Today's action: Our champ needs to match all six to achieve a tie. The question doesn't sound like one that everyone would likely answer the same way. My first thought was "Flushing" New York... Wow, the contestant said Flushing too! In fact, the whole top tier had "Flushing" but the bottom tier all had "Plunging" or, in Betty's case, "Plugging." Our defeated champ had won one game and $600. Today's audience match question: "Michael ________ " (My thoughts: Landon*, Learned*, Evans*) *MG trivia: There have been three "Michaels" who have appeared as Match Game panelists: Michael Landon appeared on the very first week of Match Game '73 and was chosen twice for the head-to-head question and matched the contestant once! Miss Michael Learned appeared for week number two in 1973, but she was never chosen for the H/H. The third and final "Match Game" Michael is Michael (aka Mike) Evans who appeared in episodes 331-335 and was also never chosen for the H/H. None of the Michaels ever returned for a second week. It's interesting that Betty White suggested Michael Learned. Betty's first week week on the panel was the week following Michael Learned's appearance. The celebs: Richard (Douglas), Betty (Learned), Rosemary via numerous cards tossed to her from her colleagues (Angelo) The choice: Angelo The answers: Caine, Angelo, Landon Now is the time when the champion customarily plays the "Match Richard Dawson" segment of the game... Wow!!! Okay, I'm picking myself up off the floor. I honestly didn't see that coming. The contestant chose Richard first, so I figured she'd choose him even though she (wisely) didn't take his audience match suggestion. If Rosemary had given the same audience match answer that the contestant had thought of, I'd say she should definitely choose her, but "Angelo" wasn't really Rosemary's answer - she'd received two or three balled-up cards tossed her way from other panelists, and she unfolded them and read the answers and picked one. To top it off, the contestant said her first thought was "Landon." This means that the contestant is flying blind with Rosemary, perhaps relying on a gut feeling or some instinct... At any rate, I'm delighted to see a fresh face in the H/H hot-seat and Rosemary Forsyth has now entered a more selective group in Match Game history. Let's see how she does... Today's H/H question: "Substitute _______ " (I'll say substitute teacher. That was my first choice and it sounds adequately generic and common. I also thought of substitute sugar, but then I realized that I was actually thinking of sugar substitute... This one actually sounds fairly easy. Fingers crossed.) Rosemary quickly writes and files her answer. The camera wasn't on her the entire time, but I didn't see any evidence of Richard or anyone else offering suggestions. The contestant offers the predicted answer. I'm holding my breath... Rosemary had a mildly crestfallen look on her face. But she's an actress! And it's... "Teacher"! Rosemary Forsyth enters the Match Game record books, becoming the *38th* MG celebrity to ever score a head-to-head match! This was her first attempt. (She's the first new celeb to score a H/H match since Lynn Deerfield way back in episode 787.) *Here's the full list of all 38 celebrities who have so far scored a H/H match in Match Game '7x (in alphabetical order):* Don Adams, Jack Albertson, Morey Amsterdam, Orson Bean, Charlie Brill, Joyce Bulifant, Gary Burghoff, Jack Carter, Bert Convy, Bill Daily, Clifton Davis, Richard Dawson, Lynn Deerfield, Patti Deutsch, Ann Elder, Fannie Flagg, Rosemary Forsyth, Stu Gilliam, Elaine Joyce, Carolyn Jones, George Kennedy, Jack Klugman, Michael Landon, June Lockhart, Allen Ludden, Mary Ann Mobley, Jo Ann Pflug, Charles Nelson Reilly, Madlyn Rhue, Isabel Sanford, Brett Somers, Kaye Stevens, Trish Stewart, Loretta Switt, Richard Thomas, Bobby Van, Betty White, and Jo Anne Worley. ~~~Finally, here's our standing leader board (nothing changed on this board today, obviously) showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) When Pam won almost $3,000, I got curious about what that would be in today's dollars. Holy wow! According to Dollar Times: Adjusted for inflation, $3,000.00 in 1977 is equal to $12,707.42 in 2018. Annual inflation over this period was 3.58%. So, any time someone wins money on TMG, we can quadruple it to estimate what it'd be in today's dollars. I'd be crying, too, if I won close to Thirteen Thousand Dollars!
hehe I had the exact opposite reaction. I couldn't believe someone would get THAT worked up over 12ish thousand bucks. A nice boon, sure, but not life-changing.
When they changed how inflation was calculated first during the Reagan administration and then every administration thereafter, it is very difficult to determine the actual value of those fiat bucks over that much time. Certainly, the value is much greater than quadruple but by how much is only a rough guess.
