I learned something on this video. I always thought it was the solenoid that wasn't working properly. I didn't know the seat was the problem. Thank you for this video.
I had the Home Depot model of Sabre. Orange and Grey. It had the BEST Transmission Control. NO PEDALS. It did do the fuel in Crankcase deal which I repaired.
Love that ratchet, never seen one that swivels like that. I've never knew you could take the emultion tube to the grinder with a wire wheel. Even though my wheel is fine, I thought it would damage the tube. Nice simple puller. Great video, thanks.
This brought back some memories. I had to do this same job on a Scott's branded John Deere lawn tractor several years ago. Identical to the Sabre's only it had a Kohler Command 16 hp. engine. Made the little tool to pull the seat too. Nice work Don!
Kinda looked like the corrosion trash inside of the bowl was the culprit. There was a bit of trash between the float pivot stop (that little plastic tang on the outside of the pivot pin spot, that restricts the float travel on that "axle" from going too far so that the needle's clip can slip off the float, the "L" shaped bit) and the carb body/bowl. If enough trash builds up there, or floats/shifts into that spot, it prevents the float from raising fully to close the needle valve, thus letting fuel flow all of the time. I work on a lot of these Briggs engine with the fuel flooded crankcase, and have come up with a more end-user-friendly solution for the fuel cutoff. I use an electric NC solenoid valve inline from the tank, wired up parallel with the carb's solenoid, to only allow fuel to flow when the ignition is on, Amazon ASIN B0D3Q57JVB. This way, one doesn't need to remember to turn on/off the flow valve.
If you go to the hardware store, you can get a rolled pin that will work in place of the socket. Just make sure it is taller than the surrounding interfering carb parts. Good video.
Leaking carbs into the engine always reminds me of the old POS snappper snowblower I cut my teeth on as a kid. It had an ancient 8hp briggs with the updraft carb, I could always get it to run at the beginning of the season, but could never get it to run quite right, and that diagonal jet tube always made the thing dribble gasoline if you forgot to turn the fuel valve off, but with it being an updraft carb it couldn't flood the engine. I was almost sad to see the thing go off to greener pastures once I found a nicer snowblower on the side of the road.
Very instructive video great job. K as I mentioned in past I consider myself a tinkerer with success. My question is I understand the float needle operation and a stuck one either in the closed or open position. My question is when stuck in the open position and fuel is flowing in my limited knowledge I thought it would come out the carburetor air inlet. How is it filling the crankcase. Is it flowing down through the valves or down through the piston or is it down through where the breather vent is. Once again GREAT video and tutorial. You also answered the question on how to change the brass seat cause I was a pressed fixture and not something that just turns out. Thank You Great Job 👏👏👏👏👏👊👍✌️🙃
If the intake valve is open, gas flows into the cylinder, then past the rings, into the sump. If the intake valve is shut, gas flows between the valve and the valve guide, into the sump. Best way to stop this [when gas tank higher than carb] is to install fuel line shutoff valve and use it.
I HAVE THIS EXACT SABRE MOWER. I'VE REBUILT THE CARB TWICE, REPLACED THE KEY SWITCH TWICE, AND THE SOLENOID TWICE. NOT BAD FOR A 1996 MOWER. NEVER BEEN REBUILT. OH, I ADUSTED THE VALVES ONCE. IT WAS WELL WORTH PUTTING FOUR NEW TIRES ON IT. COMPARE THAT WITH A NEW MOWER
Donnie I have two Troy-Bilt pony riding mowers with the Briggs & Stratton 17.5 hp single cylinder engines on them. One of the mowers is a 2005 model and the other is a 2013 model and I took the auntie backfire solenoid or fuel shut off solenoid as they're properly called out of both of my carburetors and put the regular bowl nut on them and both of my machines run perfect without those fuel shut off solenoids
I liked you showing how to remove the needle seat. I have a Walbro LMK carburetor and was able to clean it to get the needle valve to seat and didn't have to replace the seat but now I see how to replace the needle seat if it comes to that. I do have a question? I have a 24 hp Kawasaki and a 15 hp Tecumseh. Both engines are running good but I can hear random misfires when the engines are idling. Any ideas on troubleshooting the exact cause?
90% of the time I use 4 steel wool to polish the seat it polishes it up just as pretty as a new seat at worst I have to replace the needle but I have only replace one seat in all the years I've been working on stuff the rest of the time I have just polished the seats and they work just fine
Thanks for another great video, Dony. Love these step by steps! What specifically was causing it to not start? Leaking needle and seat? Fuel in the oil is just the symptom of that but not the actual issue? (would obviously cause issues long term) Can you explain what you mean when you say hydro-locked?
Hydro locking occurs when the crankcase becomes so full of gas and oil that the piston cannot travel downward. Liquids cannot be compressed. It can also refer to a situation where the cylinder becomes full of fuel.
Excellent training aid. The whole time while watching this I'm thinking how lucky your neighbor is. Are there any homes for sale next to you because I can provide you with some great video materials. Lol
I have an old Kohler Command and if I don't shut off that valve when I stop the mower for even a few minutes it backfires. Can mow for an hour fine but when it sits the needle leaks. I will probably just put in a new needle and not the seat.
To clean a crusty seat, simply use a wooden q-tip in a drill with some lapping compound on q-tip. Look closely at needle to be sure it is in good shape, clean needle, and test.
Dony does that white plastic fuel inlet where you attached your pressure tester.......Does that pull out of the carb and have a screen behind it??????? If so would it be good to clean that as well??????
I have the LMK Walbro Carb on my JD STX38 Kohler Command, you can buy the carb kit with seat. Part # Kohler 12-521-03-S is $50. Double the price of a complete Chinese Carb on Amazon?
I always check to see if the float itself floats because I’ve seen a float half and not notice it was defective. Great how to video by the way. You and Chickanic are my favs.
I have a Scotts 1642 identical to the Sabre made also by John Deere but with a Kholer engine, i have the trouble you just showed how to fix. Is the procedure the same on the Kholer engine.
@@luuk-out-below9804 The solenoid cuts off the fuel flow into the main jet to prevent backfiring when the ignition is turned off, however the bowl vents into the intake body, so if the bowl overflows, the fuel level exceeds the height of the vent and flows into the intake. @@kirikayuumura3256 I understand that but if the anti backfire valve is working properly no fuel should flow into the carb in the first place right ? Oh wait I AM WRONG , fuel will still flow into the carb even if the main jet is plugged by the valve because the fuel inlet lets fuel into the carb just not up the main jet .
