    This is timely for me to watch because I shared images I had captured at the Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade yesterday and I had the pleasure of viewing The Americans for the first time this past weekend. It was an interesting book because there seemed to be a lot of images I would describe as side profiles, which has become more common again with street photos (possibly taken out of fear or because timing was off), and I was puzzled by the absence of animal subjects. Then again, I feel like the majority of Americans at the time the work was captured, viewed animals as work animals or as accessories. I don’t know when people started to adopt or buy pets to take care of, but I feel like it’s a behavior that became more popular during the mid 20th century. Such a fascinating topic to learn about though, dogs in street photography.

      The thing is, if you look at the Phaidon dog book I talk about in the film you can see that dogs have been much beloved pets for many many years, easily since the late 1800s and earlier. The Americans has horses in it but not one dog. I don't think there are any cats either. Glad you liked it though, part 2 coming soon....

    "Couldn't give a monkey's toss." Can't say I've heard that one before. I like your point about cropping. EE offers no better example. (I understand the famed HCB shot is also violently cropped.) I've known about Pentti Sammallahti but have never gotten my paws on a book. I just checked the local library and they have a copy of one of his. Happy day.

    Awesome, as always! Woof indeed! When the sun shines in the UK, it must not be tampered with! I love photographing my two pugs, Rebel (Rebel Startrooper) and Chewie (Chewbacca). The don't cooperate with my slow Leica rangefinder skills... But, they are better dogs than I am a photographer!

    Great episode Stephen. I see a call from Thames and Hudson soon looking for a new history of photography book with jokes. I'd buy it. If memory serves me well ( which these days it fails to do on a regular basis ) the great dane and chihuahua pic was for an ad shoot? I could be wrong. I will never look at The Americans in the same way again.

    • @stephenlesliephoto
      @stephenlesliephoto ปีที่แล้ว

      I seriously doubt Thames & Hudson would risk it! Although I am in the new 'Reclaim The Street' book that Matt Stuart and Steven McLaren have done that's out next year. I don't think the other Erwitt was done specifically for an advert, I thought maybe he was out shooting an advert when he saw it and got it?? But, obviously, I could be wrong. I often am. Glad you're enjoying the films. More still to come...

    Reminds me of a story about how once Arbus fell out with Winogrand about a shared cat photo, to this date the relative estate are still in conflict over the copyright and has never been published, indeed you'll not hear much about the story officially due to much lingering embarrassment, where one party threw a sandwich at the other in anger and ran away.
