  • Bhaktapur is one of the most incredible cities I’ve come across in Asia. It’s situated in the Kathmandu valley of Nepal.
Bhaktapur was once a Newari city kingdom which is why it’s so full of traditional Newar art, architecture, food and culture.
Walking through the city of Bhaktapur makes me feel like I’m travelling in time to an era in the distant past. It’s got the most beautiful wood carvings I’ve ever seen as well as some unique and very influential architecture.
Unfortunately it was affected by the 2015 earthquake which destroyed many buildings. I explore the beauty and tragedy in this wonderful city of Nepal.

The one you called dragon isn't a dragon but its a mythical creature called Hitimanga - the one with body and face of crocodile, eyes of deer, trunk of elephant, ears of boar and horns of sheep. Hiti manga mostly represents the water related creatures. These kind of stone water spouts were built around the town for disrtibuting water in the old times. For this, different water canals were dug and brought into a big pond like reservoir which basically can be found out on outskirt of ancient town. And then the water were supplied through underground channel system where water flowed through various channels and get filtered. The excessive water flowed out of other channel and these channels were connected. Most of these channels are broke in the present day, so most of these water spout are dry but they serve naturally when it's monsoon.

Thank you for that information. Just love the artistic talent in Nepal. I wonder, do Nepalese work in the art sectors around the world? I have seen that in certain groups in India who were know to be skilled artesians through history, now work in the creative field. They make great chefs, architects, graphic design or even in dance and music! It is like their genes carried that creative DNA in successive generations.

The Newari cities can indeed be dubbed some of the most underrated cities in Asia. Everything there makes you feel like you've stepped into an ancient portal. Those hitis or ancient water systems are pretty awe-inspiring. They serve quite well to give us glimpses of how our ancestors may have lived. And the details on almost every piece of architecture whether the water taps or temple posts always blow me away, they're just so incredibly intricate and I could stare at them for hours.
These cities have faced a lot of pressure from unplanned urbanization from recent governments and it's quite sad really. If preserved well they can be a boon to human history.

As a history lover, it’s so wholesome to see a foreigner so knowledgeable about our history and architecture. Your attention to detail and knowledge of specific things are so refreshing and frankly you could give a lesson on Newari architecture and culture to many Nepalis themselves. Way to go! I hope you have a great time in Nepal as much as I loved watching this vlog.

As you have seen, there are plenty of wells and open taps and that's why it is imp. to make roads of bricks. If we plaster all the roads then rainwater wont get inside the soil to recharge the wells and taps so if we pave our roads with bricks, water will drip through it and it recharges the natural underground water sources.

      Who is complete God?
The Holy Bible gives the answer to this question. Let's find out.
Iyov 36:5 - Orthodox Jewish Bible (OJB)
See, El is Kabir, and despiseth, not any; He is Kabir in ko’ach lev (strength of understanding).
Translation: Supreme God is Kabir, but despises no one. He is Kabir, and firm in his purpose.
In all Bible translations, the word Kabir has been translated as "Mighty" or "Great" whereas Kabir is the original name of Supreme God.
Conclusion: This verse of the Bible proves that Kabir is Complete God. The one who worships God Kabir by taking initiation from the complete saint sent by him gets complete salvation. After attaining salvation that souls rest in peace in the eternal abode Satlok forever. The throne of God is in Satlok.

Nice fact about the pagoda temples. Newar history is quite far reaching the more I learn about it. I remember reading that back then Chinese commissioners were sent to visit Nepal, I think around 8th or 7th century, and were impressed by pagoda temples in Newar kingdoms. At that time there weren't any such architecture in China. This started the exchange on pagoda designs with China.

Bhaktapur Municipality gives 35% of the cost for artistic wooden doors and windows. But the wood and the cost of such work is getting higher and higher that people with less money but who needs home are building houses with aluminium windows. So far the City has preserved its originality pretty well, but the municipality must have to do more.
The streets in Bhaktapur are paved with bricks. This helps the earth soak water when it rains. This keeps the wells in the city with water. This also saves streets from sink holes. However, the brick street does require frequent maintenance.

    • @NewZman23
      @NewZman23 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

however, the ongoing maintenance gives desperately needed work to the people - so actually it's a win-win situation. .Slight problem is the pollution caused by brick kilns in the Ktm valley. If the kilns could be powered by electricity made from hydro and/or solar, this would be even better. Another project for Balen ji :-)

8:30 those stone taps are called "Hiti" in newari language and "dhunge dhara" in Nepali. They do not have any mechanical parts. Its totally based on ground water. Interestingly, it is one of the oldest and still in use water supply system in asia. It may look simple but it has very complex system under ground which supplies water without the help of any external force. But unfortunately due to unplanned urbanization and over consumption of ground water, these hitis don't work nowdays. But on a positive side, community and city authority are experimenting with refilling the ground water artificially rather than letting nature do it which would take decades. Water is the backbone of newa civilization after all its the primary source for food security. Hitis are considered equally important as temples.

In Nepal, Ganesh or Ganapati is a Tantrik deity and is worshiped in both Shaiva (Shiva) Tantra and also Vajrayana Tantrik Buddhism, together with Saraswati and some other deities that are syncretic to both traditions.

3:56 you know what mate, you are the first person in entire Neplese history nobody ever showed Dregon sculpture, first time I noticed Dregon sculpture in Nepal. You should make special video highlighting about it.Nepalese people don't know this, how old is it.
We have snakes, God goddesses, lions, birds, peacocks, elephants, deities, but Dregon, this is the only one. I never saw one.
But matters is it newly sculpted or old one.

The one he showed Dragon is not a dragon but a mythical creature called Hiti Manga. I also commented about it, so you can also read it up. Well, talking about dragon sculptures, you will find it on most of the Mahaviharas - the ancient Buddhist monasteries of the valley

@@frannkeyfranz Hiti Manga definitely dragon, perhaps Newari term for dragon. Thanks for information.

@@station2248 no. Dragons do have a different local term, don't get mixed up on it. If you know Golden temple, please do visit there - you will find century old dragon sculptures of metal and also engraved in wood carvings too. Dragons are known as Mipwala, a mythical creature that holds three jewels and is a creature from Bajrayana Buddhism that is practiced in the valley. You may find sculpture of dragons on every place where Bajrayana, Mahayana and Sutrayana sect of Buddhisms are practiced. Dragons are not new for newars as they had it for centuries but sadly its a forgotten creature now

@@station2248 Hiti Manga, is a mythical creature believed to bring the monsoon. Its a creature with crocodile's face and body, eyes of deer, ears of boar or pig, trunk of an elephant and horns of sheep. As it is associated with monsoon, you will it in every water spouts here. The round designs on the neck of water spout is about the monsoon clouds that are ready to bring water on the ground. This is how artistically and symbolically a water spout represents about water. Hiti Manga do have it's own form and myths.

Here after the first vid of yours, there you mentioned about how the doors of the old houses to be small. Its not because the people there were short, but the people not only in newari culture but everywhere else have short doors (mostly old houses). It resembels their home to be a sacred place as a temple where you bow down to show a sign of respect. They were intended to be short.
