Our hosts Gabe Dannenbring, Bri Richardson, and Jess Smith celebrate Halloween on this week's episode of Teachers Off Duty by diving into the world of ghost stories, haunted schools, and eerie encounters in the classroom.
Do you believe in the paranormal? Because we do, and we share our strategy on how we would react to some of the most spine-tingling spectral situations you could imagine. It's all in good fun... unless you’re afraid of ghosts!
Kids have the craziest imaginations, and as teachers we get to hear all the terrifying tales that they end up coming up with. Apparently anything can be haunted these days, we recently heard a story about a possessed pottery wheel named Patrick? We don't know what our students think is so scary about a pottery wheel, but it's definitely an entertaining idea.

Teachers Off Duty - a Bored Teachers podcast
Poor Gabe.... He just mad he never got his letter from Hogwarts lol
As much as you guys didn't like reading these stories we need another episode of these! This video was one of the most hilarious ones I've seen in a while!!
I need the trio of Tyler, Gabe and Bri at some point
It would be an hour of straight laughter 😂
The 3 of them are up next in a few weeks! 🤩
@@TeachersOffDutyPodcast OMG!!!!!!!!
Yessss! I’m so ready
@@TeachersOffDutyPodcast now the question is who will make Bri laugh more Tyler or Gabe
I’d definitely choose a wand over a light saber. It is much more versatile. And it’s not just a stick! Every wand is different and has different magical cores.
Sorry, Gabe got me fired up and I’m ready to fight 😂
Gabe, the first story you read about the water running in the sink was mine! I wasn’t expecting to hear it in the podcast! So cool!
That experience definitely freaked me out! I was so scared and felt like I couldn’t get out of the building fast enough!
Gabe, you know JK didn't invent the 3 headed dog, right? Cerberus is from Greek legend, Hades' guard dog?
Thank you for pointing this out. I am just happy somebody knows it has very little to do with Hogwarts, lol
I had a first grade student unfortunately pass away and one day during a lesson one of his classmates said that he knew how to contact our lost friend. I paused and stared at him, not sure where he was going with this. He started to say ‘ ouija board’ but I cut him off with an elongated ‘nooo’. Then another student went to ask what that was and I repeated my same no again and quickly went back to the lesson. Maybe if the students weren’t first graders, I might of explained better, but I was both shocked and panicked and didn’t want parents contacting me wondering why I told their kids about that kind of stuff.
"That's right. My classroom management skills are next level - supernatural. I keep students in line dead or alive. Who ya gonna call?"
GHOSTBUSTERS 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Does Gabe know that the composer for Harry Potter also wrote the music for Star Wars? Long live John Willams
21:48 "I've already cussed like 3 times its ok." I love Bree's nonchalant attitude
it's the Sallie House that Gabe is talking about in Atchison, Kansas. That place is one of the truly creepy places
We need a part 2 to this episode, this is so amazing.
Bri would pass away if she heard some of the stories my bestie and i have from her childhood home lol 😂 house was 200years old, and we grew up with the haunts being just a regular in our lives lol from 3 yrs old to teens it was our everyday normal for something paranormal to happen to seeing “people in costume” walking through walls (we thought they were friends of her parents or aunts and uncles we never met), to listening to kids playing in her rooms and us frustrated that we couldnt find the kids to ask them to play with us, to clothes on hangers being thrown from the closets (horizontally across the room), hearing a woman sobbing loudly in her sisters closet, curtains being ripped from walls hardware and all, constant footsteps when no one was home but us, doors opening and closing, locking and slamming, piano music, and watching a chair drag across the wooden floor; theres SO MUCH MORE that was just normal to us we slept just fine every night lol it wasnt til we were in middleschool that we learned that wasnt normal for everybody we talked to lol it was just home to us lol 👻🤷♀️😅
My ghost story isn't from teaching but babysitting. The house I was born in was haunted my older sister discussed things with "George" and he walked her to the bathroom at night etc. as a kid I always assumed he was just her imaginary friend as we moved out of the house when I was very young. Years later I'm 18 babysitting the little girl who lived in the house and heard her talking to herself but pausing like she was having a conversation so I asked her "who are you talking to dear". She looked at me smiled and said "George he's my friend". Guess he wasn't just my sister's imaginary friend 😂
So pretty much my whole city is haunted, not only are a lot of the buildings old but to make things worse a large portion of the city is built on Native American burial grounds. I have seen ghosts everywhere and grew up seeing them, i grew up watching my great grandfather who died when my grandma was 9 no possible way for me to know him and had never seen pictures of him. The motions that he makes is like he is checking for monsters like a dad would do, im 30 he still visits and his wife and my grandma have since joined him. My current attachment or ghost is a little girl about 5 or 6 years old who has followed me for about 6 years now. My son and i have recently named her Lilly, she mostly likes to just hang out in the hallway watching but has lately enjoyed playing with a smiling face balloon.
My creepiest teacher story is from my first year.
I had a student sobbing in the bathroom. Deep belly cries and he was inconsolable. I finally got him out of the bathroom and I asked why he was crying. He told me there was blood. Immediately I freaked out asking him where he hurt himself and he said he didn’t hurt himself. I asked him where the blood was and he pointed to the floor. I looked and saw nothing. I asked again, and he said there is a big pool of blood on the floor and an entity was coming for him. I sent that poor kid to the counselor. I didn’t even know what to do.
I felt eerie in my classroom ever since
My college dorm was haunted. There were footsteps in the hallway. Giggling in the alcoves. Too many things happened to be discounted over many, many years. So many stories.
My last school was right next to a cemetery. Really freaked me out. Teachers would tell kids to be good or they'll end up in the prison to cemetery pipeline and get buried right outside the school.
One of the shows should be live-streamed! I'd totally buy tickets to stream from home 😎
This is one of my favorite host combos on the show. I usually listen but when I heard the last minutes of this show I had to come and see the video. Omg… seriously so funny.
I pulled up at my elementary school many years ago. I was the first one in the parking lot. It was still dark and the street lights and building safety lights were still on. No wind. Nobody in sight. And one of the middle swings on the swing set was swinging about half way, like as high as a small child would swing. With my very first video-abilitied phone, I videoed it and shared the video with our library aide. It completely freaked her out. 😅 I instinctively knew there was some normal physical effect, but it scared her to death.
I agree with y’all! I’ve got Jesus and the Holy Spirit allllllll in me and I’m untouchable by evil spirits!
So I'm a nurse (but I REALLY wanted to be a teacher and was discouraged by school "counselors" who said my grades weren't good enough. I went in for some encouragement and discuss my future, I didnt know if I wanted to be a nurse, teacher, or biologist. I'm so glad I didn't listen to them. Anyways....😅) and I can guarantee you that ghosts and spirits are real and that NONE of you would survive Noc shift 😂😂😂 from seeing/hearing/feeling a ghost to things being thrown across rooms, you name it. I guess what I'm trying to say is, stock up on some sage. 😂 also, watch out for those full moons lol
I love this trio! I listen to this on my way to work. This year has been so hard for me teaching in a new building with a new team and this trio always makes me laugh. I agree with everyone I need a trio of Bri, Gabe and Tyler. Thank you for making at least one day of my year a better day ❤
This episode made me laugh. Thank all of you for this video. My answer for the ghost is do not talk to, do not look at, and most of all do not name it
y’all’s adhd was the 4th host today 😂
LOL 😂 Such a great episode
49:24 I have not laughed harder in my entire life. I would have been deceased 😂
I have watched that part over 5 times. the short probably 10 times
The peak moment of the last story had me in stitches 😂 I must have watched in at least 10 times!!!! You should come to Ireland and hear the ghost stories we have, not so much in school, but our homes and neighbourhoods 😅
That is such a random favorite scene from Harry Potter 😂
Very much!!!! Why that part lmbo😅😅😅
@@Bucck_50LOL 😂 Gotta love it!
@@TeachersOffDutyPodcast absolutely!!! This was a great start to October! I can't wait until Thanksgiving and Christmas come around! Please bring them back for a few episodes!!!
I bit my doughnut. Started to chew. Jess said "swingset". Gabe said "NOPE!!". I inhaled, and choked on a doughnut and died. Now I'm the doughnut ghost in my own house.
#BOO
😂
Omg! I can’t with you!!!😂😂😂
Omg friend! 😂
I’m a dance teacher and I worked at a high school that many people confirmed it was haunted. Apparently, when the school was being built, a little girl was playing in the construction area and died. Custodians would hear things at night and one time saw a little girl in a school uniform thinking it was a teacher’s child but they didn’t have anyone with them. My 3 kids used to hang out with me when I had to work in the summer to prepare for the new school year and would hang out when I had dance rehearsal with my dance team. My oldest daughter and my youngest son were with me one day and they were hanging out in my office. My daughter was about 18 yrs old and my son was about 3 yrs old. I was getting things done in the building and they said that a hole puncher flew across my office at them. I told them yeah it’s my little child ghost who hangs out in my room and she doesn’t like to share me. Things would happen in my room but I was never scared of it. My students used to experience things too. Spooky and fun times! Miss that school❤
Correction: my daughter said it was her and my middle child, my other son who was about 13 yrs old at the time.
The school I teach at used to be an Indian Boarding School back in the day. I've never heard anything when I was there late but other teachers have. My wife, who used to work in the other side of the building (we share it with our tribal government) has heard things when she was there late one night. Oh and the building was featured on Ghost Hunters.
My elementary school was located about a block away from a gravel quarry. Workers blasted rocks into gravel creating a rumbling noise and we felt the tremors. It caused the window shades to roll up and make a horrible racket. We knew it wasn't
ghosts, but it was scary.
I used to live in an older home in Denison Tx. I used to hear conversations in other rooms, but no one was there. Sometimes I smelled cigarette smoke. We don't smoke. So I yelled at them and told them "No smoking in the house". I didn't smell it anymore. Until one day I opened the freezer and there were the cigarette smells again! So, I told them "And no smoking the appliances either!"
I live near Denison, TX
I can understand this too it was late one night like after midnight I think and in my house (which was built in 1963 we are the first owners of the house) When I heard two people very clearly like whisper, talking outside my bedroom door and very distinctly remember that it was a a man and a woman and they sounded like adults I don’t know what they were saying but when I turned over (I was in my bed) to look at direction, nobody was there. I even checked the hallway and nobody was in the hallway. I live in New York State.
Don’t be saying this stuff I live far too close to Denison! 😵
@@AC-pm3mc ws lived on west walker. On the corner of W Walker and York. It was a white house.
When my daughter (12) and I drove through Effingham she said "what about effing turkey?" Lol
OMG, I was listening to this podcast on the way to work this morning and when I reached my classroom, I heard a lady’s voice on the inside. There should not have been any voices! My smart screen had turned on and there was a message being repeated about being hacked. Timing was everything on this one. 😂. Freaked me out!
"Why invite something you can't control? "
Me: "i mean yall got the kids, at least this one can be a fun helper"
My aunt is a medium so she sees ghosts all the time. When she lived in Ohio there was an older lady ghost that would turn the TV off when “she” thought the kids had watched it too long.
The house in Atchison, KS is called the Sallie House and it is something to behold. It's part of a guided haunted house tour that goes all over the town in the summer and before Halloween. The house itself is freaky but there's just as many rebuttles to the story that it was all made up as a publicity stunt. Who knows? My mom is from Atchison and we still have a bunch of family there. One of the family friends bought one of the old houses on the bluffs next to the river and we have stayed in it a couple times for family functions since he is renovating it to eventually make it an AirBnB. It's also on the haunted house tour. I didn't hear or see anything though! The history of the older houses in that town is fascinating.
I worked at an elementary school that had a church across the street and our location was said to have been the morgue of the church back in the day (allegedly) lol. We had a few occasions where the teacher saw a child that was not there. Once, we were getting the children ready for carpet time by washing their hands. We had one child with special needs who liked to travel to the big lego blocks before going to the carpet if you didn't tell him to come sit down. Well, this time the teacher called for him to sit down and get out of the blocks section of the play area. The other TA and I looked at each other and then at the teacher and told her that he was sitting right next to me and she looked back and no one there. It was pretty creepy not gonna lie lol
The school where I worked last year has ghosts in them. Welp, I just gotta talk to them for them not to meddle to much 🤣🤣🤣
I only want people who are terrified of ghosts to read ghost stories from now on. This was hilarious.
I'm so happy that you guys are coming to fresno next year! I texted my teacher and para-professional coworkers in our group chat! I'm so excited!
This video was only missing Tyler 😂😂 omg i started crying at the end of laughing so hard
Gabe does not have the background knowledge to make such declarations about Harry Potter. Read the books, then come back, and we'll talk.
Nah coz he sounds so ignorant for someone who be hating so much
I agree. Jeez
More ghost story episodes PLEASE!!!! This was wonderful.
The number of times I replayed y’all getting scared at the end 😂
I respect an opinion when it's informed & well thought out...I don't respect his opinion 😆
Noted 😂
It's clear that Gabe does not teach social studies. Someone teach this man about Cerberus.
I’m a huge HP fan. The only thing Gabe should fear, other than Ouija Boards, is these two knuckle sandwiches he’s about to get. Harry Potter is amazing. READ THE BOOKS.
When I was in hs i ditched fitness walking class one time cuz i wasnt feeling well and hid in the girls lockeroom where a couple other girls also were. They began talking about summoning a demon and before i knew it they turned off the lights and me having my rosemary necklace with jesus on the cross began to pray where i was sitting rebuking anything they might be doing to not affect me in any way. A month or so later i was speaking to the custodian lady that cleaned up in the evening and she was so scared but she let me know that she was in the lockerroom cleaning up and she heard a man in the same room in a deep voice let out a yell and she booked it out of there leaving her cart and all and just grabbed her purse which was already bu the door. I told her what those girls did and it felt weird going into the lockerroom ever since, also to say i never skipped again and stayed away from those ppl. 😅
Many of my family members are psychically sensitive, and we see/hear ghosts and spirits. I have fought literal demons to protect my family.
That Harry Potter quote was DELICIOUS! 😂❤ you got me wanting to re-read but with an accent 😂
Got another shoutout Wssss!!!! But the Harry Potter disrespect is krazy 😢😢😢😢😢😦
I'm a Para, and we have had multiple instances of faucets turning on by themselves. Not a huge deal, except they also turn themselves off. Once I was talking to a teacher in her glassed in office when I notice she's looking past me, and she stops me from also looking and says let's keep talking and I'll tell you in a minute.... I finish what I had to say--much abbreviated, because what the heck, right? Then she talks some and then, she stops looking past me. Teacher then explains she was watching the corner across from us. She saw a little boy in knee length dark shorts and button up light colored shirt. Our building is currently a K12 and our room was middle school. No reason for a little boy to be in there. MY DESK is situated under the US flag un that corner. The flag was waving and our AC was not running at the time. No students were in the room either. Multiple staff have heard doors open and close or even SLAM shut. We are all instructed to close our classroom doors whenevwr we leave them. During the day or otheraise, they are always shut. It is habit dor us all. Upon investigating a door slam, one teacher found a door OPEN. (Think this through, dear readers. A door SLAMS shut, but a door is standing OPEN). One last thing: I have been finishing up daily paperwork more than once when only a few staff still around. My desk is beside a chalkboard with a chalk tray on the wall. More than once I have heard something drop onto the chalk tray. I have dropped items in the tray on purpose to try and identify what it is. Sounds just like a thumbtack falling off the strip of cork above the chalkboard. .... Now when I tell you I have certain things I am anal about....I put my un occupied thumbtacks in rainbow order evenly spaced above the board in the strip of cork. None of those tacks are ever missing when I hear that sound hit the tray. Not one. The end.
Have y'all ever heard of the theater 'Ghost Light'? Once it was not left on overnight and my highschool theater teacher ABSOLUTELY REFUSED to go into the theater until the house lights and stage lights were turned on by a student.
Funnily enough, the music for both Star Wars and Harry Potter was composed by John Williams. Also, it’s possible to love both, GABE! 👀😤
4:08 Bri's accent was so good, she should try an Australian accent next. I bet she would be so good at it 😂😂
30:43 if you put the video in 0.5 playback speed and watch Gabe's eyebrow, you can see it twitch twice
Hello from Atchison KS!! So neat to hear the town name said. 😂
You should have met my digital art teacher in high school because she made her classroom look like Halloween 24/7
I swear My childcare room is haunted. In 2020 I still had to go in and be there even though kids weren’t coming. Scary enough. So a few times while I’m just sitting in an empty room drawing the piggy bank toy starts talking and singing. I just stared at it and prayed. Lol
Lmao, Patrick the Ghost, because she's an art teacher 😂😂😂 she HAS to be trolling 😂😂😂
I listened to the podcast on another platform but had to come here for the video of the door opening while Gabe read the last story. 😂👻
Him not knowing what a hell hound is crazy to me. You never looked at or studied any religion/ mythology at all ?
This show is my favorite! Love you three together! Can’t wIt to see you in November in Peoria!😂
When Bri ran at 30:35 has me cracking up every time I replay it 😂😂😂😂😹😹
This has been the most entertaining thing ever!
As always, an awesome episode! And a fun topic with Halloween not too far away!
It was so fitting! 🤩
The Sallie House in Kansas, which is 2 hours away from me.
I have NEVER laughed more!!! The end was CHEF’S KISS!!! I have worked at a haunted school before. I could just feel someone in the room with me almost all the time. So I downloaded an app that turns people into the little stick figures with dots….anyway, it evidently picks up ghosts too and…YEP. When I was in my planning period and alone in the room I opened up the app. Sitting at one of the desks was, evidently, a ghost. So, since it didn’t cause any trouble and never felt negative or menacing, I started to talk to it when I was alone in the room. I even tried a ghost box app and it said something about dying in a fire. There had been a fire with fatalities at the school a long time ago. So, I guess I had a ghost student. 🤷🏻♀️
I like Potter AND Star Wars! Was 12 when SW came out, and it rocked my world. Was adult when HP came out, and it did the same. There is room for both!
Hell yes I’m not even a teacher but wanna go to the Chatt show when y’all come into town!!
Every damn day of my life I've been dealing with supernatural stuff.
It's like having a lifelong nuisance that doesn't stop surprising you; and not in a good way.
Every single place I go, there they are, doing some crazy stuff. The most common being, the peak around the corner, watching me. That happens dozens of time a day.
I just sigh and get on with what I'm doing.
I even saw a psychiatrist, and the dead were banging on the clear screen door. She ran out of my house.
I was in hospital for 4 months, and everyone used to come to my room to watch the TV on the swinging crane move around violently, in very unnatural directions.
There is way, way more horrifying things that happen, but strangely, I'm used to it. I do my protective exercises, and remain impartial to the reaction they want from me.
Friend I think they're haunting you specifically not wherever you're going if they're meeting you where you go every single time.
@@ZiriO No, attraction and haunting are two different things. Attraction happens to people like me, when the dead figure out I can communicate with them.
Haunting is usually about occupying a space. Attachment happens when they form a psychic cord with a living person.
I've had several try that trick, but I use protections to avoid it happening.
@@makingmnz7564 ahhh that makes sense
Come to Australia for your next international comedy tour pleeeeeeeeaaaasssseee!!!
I love this!!!! More please!!!!
One of my students was talking about Casper and asked if Casper the ghost was in my cafeteria.
I said that the only ghost I allow in the cafeteria is the Holy Ghost.
And also also, if it wasnt for JK Rowling coming out as trash in the last few years, we would be beefing rn. HP and being a Ravenclaw (whose mascot is an eagle not a raven warner bros) was 99% of my personality.
Goblins worked at gringots bank!! Lol
You guys are a safe place!
I'm now going to pronounce Glasgow and Birmingham the way Jess did. Glas-gow and Birming-ham sounds so funny
Before I got my teaching job, there were 4 seventh grade Social Studies teachers in a 5 year span. My first two years I constantly told kids my classroom was haunted and am currently in year 3.
My 7th grade team also referred to my position as The Defense Against the Dark Arts position and claim I broke the curse.
My first year as a paraprofessional i was in an intensive structured classroom. Ome afternoon our classroom door unlocked its self and opened. No one was there. Then a few weeks later one of our students was in the bathroom next door and was talking. I asked her who she was talking to and she responded saying that she was talking to the girl who lived in the floor and i about shit my pants....😂😂
Now If he said he had a beef with Dumbledore I would understand ☠️😭☠️
I have a bone to pick with Gabe not liking Harry Potter! 🤣 he didn’t give the books a chance
You’re not alone 😅 several of the people in the comments have a bone to pick with him about it
Bri is definitely me... Cause no!😂
Gabe, I totally agree about Harry Potter!!!!
Its only redeeming quality is the music...by the legend, John Williams himself!
I am not ashamed to admit I almost peed myself laughing so hard at this episode!! 😅😂 God Bless your therapists after this one! 😅😂
I worked on campus at UAB as a janitor and I went to a specific building that had problems at night, 4am I’m in this building doing my normal duties before it opens and I hear stuff upstairs, I ran to my janitors closet thinking someone was in the building with me like a homeless person or something so I went and locked myself in my closet and waited for my boss to get there and she was black and she went up the stairs and I said shit you gonna die like white people in horror movies not me boo… told my coworkers about it and they all laughed and said yeah no one likes that building
😂😂😂😂😂
Why does it take them 10 minutes to get through their tour dates and sponsor mess?…
Literally 😭😭 why does the producer let then amazing ep but the tour dates take so much time
I am with Gabe! STAR WARS IS LIFE!
Poor Bri! She freaks out every time she reads a school ghost story.
Oooh! I love teacher ghost stories!!! I have a few….👻👻
Hey share one here! 🫣
1 is the 3 headed dog and hagrids baby dragon, 2 is basilisk, 3 is the grim, 4 is the triwizard tournament with dragons and the return of Voldamort
2 also had massive spiders
49:15 I'm going to become a ghost from laughing at this because I've rewatched it 10+ times and its even better in slow mo .25 speed 💀
I worked for an after-school program, and it was after hours after the last kid left. I was talking with 3 of my coworkers, and I was standing with my face towards them. I then heard a man yell "Hey" to me in my left ear. I turned and said, "Yes?" and no one was there. I told the ghost to stay there at the school and not follow me home in my head because I didn't need my coworkers to look at me like I was crazy.
My school is 95 years old and we have 3 ghosts that I know of.
Dark spirts !? Don’t you bring no don’t dark spirts in here 😂. I love that movie
My friend and I were in grad school. I was sitting in the corner in the work room and she was standing beside me. I was looking at her and talking to her and all of a sudden I realized she was holding the scissors that had been on the desk behind me. I said to her, “I don’t remember you picking up those scissors.” And she said, “okay that’s really weird because I don’t either.” We were both super creeped out.
we 100% have a ghost at my grocery store job. My coworker saw it and I've heard stuff.
Harry’s got the lightning bolt scar because that’s the wand movement for the death spell
That's my favorite part of Harry Potter. Second is "I think it's the pincers"
Gabe, you were a favorite, then you said you hate Harry Potter and that changed.
Last night my son, while watching Harry Potter says, "Momma, if Hedwig was real, I'd give her my stuffy Hedwig".
