  • This is both CD's from Ray Manzarek's 1996 spoken word album, MYTH AND REALITY, put together as one long read. Nothing has been edited out. Ray talks about his time in THE DOORS with Jim Morrison, Robby Krieger, and John Densmore.

Ray is the best story teller out of the three.

@@amitcohen3034Really? How different? They couldn't control Jim. Jim couldn't give a fuck. They loved each other. They hated each other. They loved the money. They hated themselves for loving the money. Jim couldn't give a fuck. The authorities set out only to destroy Jim. He fucked off. He could give a fuck. He didn't write a book about the band. Didn't need to. Even now in this Ray is taking a paternalistic view toward Jim.
Bad move. Jim couldn't stand authority figures. Especially paternal ones. Ray should have known better.
All I can say is beware psychic vampires. There's probably one looking at you now.
      Heroin?
      Nice.
      Kills the pain.
Some people can function on it.
      Some can't.
      Worse when mixed with alcohol.
      Marianne Faithfull knows what happened.
      Ask her.

I would encourage everyone to read Ray's book.... Light My Fire....My Life With The Doors.
    It was beyond excellent.

I just listened to the 11 hour Densmore audio book narrated and sung by himself I think.
Used it to put myself to sleep ( I've read it before). Lasted an hour. Was still going when I woke up.
    Going to start again tonight.
I've read all bandmates and Sugarman's books.
    Seen Stone's movie many times.
Even watched David Cosby slag Jim off in the doco Remember my Name.
There's also a couple of great docos on TH-cam. I think there's also quite a long audio interview. It's all there. Jim wasn't that hard to understand. But you can't say he wasn't unique and had a great voice and mystique. Ever seen him convulse on stage like he's possessed or heard him scream like he's exorcising everyone's demons for them?
    He's a legend.
    Death possibly helped.
    But so young?
    That's tragic.
Some women will fuck you up.
    Fame can fuck you up.
    You can fuck yourself up.
    Whatever.
What other white boy blues man literate Rock'n'roll poet had the balls to dance like a native American Indian on stage?
    Legend.
Maybe that spirit did enter him.
I've only ever seen one other white man dance like an American Indian.
    And he was a Kiwi.
    And a good friend.
    He's dead too at 27.
Maybe there's a message in there too.
    Peace Chimps

Ray called me on 7/03 (Jim's exit) to represent he enjoyed my script honoring, The Doors! "...Finished your script. Very interesting, very unusual, very very clever, I like it a lot." To hear his messages and to learn more about my experimental script and series check out my (Doors To Symbolicy - Love Death Travel) and my current series and script (Newborn Awakening) for more information and progression!

Was 10 years old when Light my Fire charted. That song woke me up about sex. Bic lighter later had a tagline in a commercial, it was a guy with a cigarette in his mouth and said to his girlfriend/wife "Ursula ,Light my Fire". In high school,we always used that line when we needed a light for our cigarettes.

I love this ! Ray was so eloquent and entertaining. I’m so sorry he passed away . Yes , he was definitely a positive guy . I’ve heard Robbie and John interviewed, they are not quite so upbeat. Robbie tends to be a bit vague and inarticulate and John comes across as a bit resentful!

That guy can sure tell a story with so much energy and passion. Stewart Copeland is the only other artist that has the same persona when talking shop.

Stewart Copeland was the original drummer of Ray Manzarek's reboot of The Doors called The Doors of the Twentyfirst Century (shortened to D21C).
The original lineup of that band in 2002 was Ian Astbury on lead vocals, Robby Krieger on guitar, Ray Manzarek on keyboards, Stewart Copeland on drums and Angelo Barberra on bass.
