Moving To Italy As A Family

  • Hey gang,
    Last week we embarked on a quest to explore the breathtaking, sun-kissed lands of Tuscany in Italy. Our mission? To determine whether we should trade our dreary, rain-soaked UK existence for the irresistible allure of a new life nestled in the Italian mountains.
    However, there's a catch - we're dedicated to maintaining our hard-earned sobriety. That means resisting the seductive siren call of the region's world-famous wine, a task that proves to be as challenging as navigating the winding roads of Tuscany in our comically underpowered rental car.
    The second part of the trip will be out next Sunday x

    The dry bread we give before the meal is supposed to be used for "scarpetta" after you've finished the meal so that you can still eat and enjoy the sauce 😊

      Plus the bread here in Italy is so delicious compared to say American bread, and without all of the added garbage like the commercialized "bread" in the US. Why does one need to add butter and cover up the delicious taste? Plus eating less butter less cardivascular problems. From an American now in Italy for the last 21 years.

    The reason why I will never unfollow you is how refreshingly honest and authentic you are.
    As a viewer since Grayson was born, watching your videos has always made me feel less alone. You remind me that it is normal to have bad days and good days, to feel anxious or depressed, and to feel the range of emotions every human does.
    Thank you for the hard work you put into what you do. But most of all, thank you for your vulnerability ❤
    Can’t wait to see what’s next for you!

    The bread restaurants put on the table before you eat isn’t dry, it’s fresh bread. The bread is usually made locally and if you’re lucky it’s homemade in the restaurant you’re eating at. Each region has their own way of making bread therefore the taste is slightly different wherever you may go. It isn’t industrialized bread, made in factories and Italians love chewing on it while waiting for their food to be brought to the table, they also love using it to soak up sauces, olive oil or meat juices left on the plate when they’ve finished their meal.

    As an Italian 22-year-old girl who learnt English also thanks to you and is now a English lit student, this is moving. I’m from Varese, a provincial countryside town which is just a 40 minute drive from Milan. I’d recommend you to move close to Milan but in the countryside, so that you get the best of both worlds, the job opportunities of Milan and the joys of the countryside. Varese is so underrated! But Como is even better🤍

    • @margherita6075
      @margherita6075 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I’m from Como and I totally agree! 😍 we are close to Northern Italy’s main cities and airports, but also Switzerland and we can easily reach any other European country - AND Liguria beaches are only 2.5 hours away. We have lakes and mountains and a lot of green areas, so yeah, I couldn’t think of a more beautiful and convenient place to live in honestly 😬

      They're moving from the UK looking for mediterranean sun. They made that clear in this vlog. Lombardy has cold winters, what is the point?

    • @margherita6075
      @margherita6075 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Alex_Rome well, Tuscany has cold winters too, the weather is totally comparable with Lombardy (not in the mountains of course, but we have them running all through the country, the Alps and the Apennines - so the weather varies with height, not by region). We’re also in a pretty bad drought as it’s not been raining enough for years and the sun keeps shining. For a more Mediterranean “feel” that I guess you’re referring to, maybe Sicily would be better, but again it has winters and you’re going to wear coats and boots, it’s not tropical weather. Also unfortunately the South of Italy is not well connected so it could be a limit for foreigners…not necessarily but I guess with children having more choice in schools and activities could be a big plus. In the North you can really get the best of both worlds, but you have to accept the changing of seasons 😅

    • @Alex_Rome
      @Alex_Rome ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@margherita6075 the winter in Piedmont and Lombardy is not the winter of Tuscany, of Rome or of the South. It is cold up there, a miserabile weather... foggy for many times of the years. Moving from the UK to north if Italy for the weather makes no sense.

    • @beatrice0043
      @beatrice0043 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Alex_Rome well, I’ve lived both here and in England and trust me, Lombardy’s winters are nothing like the British ones😂 it’s cold but it almost never snows and as soon as spring begins, temperatures are around 20 degrees. It’s so nice. And we are not far from the sea either. I was just thinking about their job and the boys and living near Milan is just easier. Language is a real barrier in Italy, unfortunately🥺

    As an italian, the mystery of the dry bread is that you're not supposed to eat it before your meal, that's the bread for you to have WITH the meal, it just comes first so it's there on the table. That's why it comes without dips or condiments ;)

    • @angela64355

    If you’re planning on living in Italy just make sure you NEVER tell people you eat pasta with chicken. Or pizza with pineapple, garlic bread, basically anything you usually eat… Just don’t talk about food at all, we are VERY defensive about it. Just learn how to cook pasta with tomato sauce (onion, tomato purée, basil and salt) and to make “scarpetta” with your bread. Or you can just drizzle olive oil and some salt on a slice of bread. You will experience pure happiness

    We have so many places that are a perfect mix of city and country life and everything is really close by in Portugal, due to the fact that we have such a small country. You can easily go from a city to the country side in a 40min car drive. Hopefully you will get to experience that when you come visit Portugal 🥰

    As an American who moved to Italy, I’m currently living in Milano but I spend lots of time around the big lakes in the north as it’s where my boyfriends family is from. I think these areas would really suit you guys. Especially if you’re torn between mountains and sea. There’s cities like Stresa, Verbania and Luino on Lago Maggiore. Como and Lecco on Lago di Como. Or around Lago di Garda like Riva di Garda or Verona which is close by. Plus you’d be so close to other large metropolitan areas that it might not feel so isolating.

    We’re currently living on a Narrowboat on the K&A with our 1 year old, it’s brilliant for now and has been that stepping stone to getting out of the rat race and broken system. Spring is gorgeous to watch from our boat, and the constant rocking is something quite special… yet it’s still the Uk…. We want to get a little piece of land in Portugal or Spain in a few years and begin a small homestead, homeschooling our children and having the space for them to run free.
    I could see your family starting a small homestead, returning to nature in a way that you haven’t experienced before, as a family.
    We were moored in bath over Christmas and I walked past Hannah on the bike, haha it felt like I had just seen a celebrity! Your family is lovely, and these videos too.
    Good luck on your search for your new home, may you be open to all possibilities and new adventures.

It does rain here but now in May the weather is really glorious so I am so sorry you got the rainy days. Although I love my country, bear in mind that in the summer it is very very hot! :-D Tuscany and Umbria are really beautiful places and the food is delicious (like in the rest of Italy). I would not recommend for you moving to a city like Rome as it beautiful but a bit of a crazy mess too :-) not easy for people that have lived in such organized places like the UK. You really have to love the italian laid back lifestyle and people to consider living here, otherwise would not recommend :-)

Tuscan hills are definitely not for us either. Tuscan saltless dry bread marks Tuscany way down tbh. Pane elsewhere in Italy can be amazing! I am currently on my year abroad in Genova, it's in the Liguria region, so north of Tuscany. It's just the most beautiful place ever, so much cheaper than Tuscany but has amazing train links to Tuscany, Turin, Milan, you can even get a direct train from genova to rome in less than 5 hours. In my opinion it's the best region. It's the birth place of pesto and focaccia - i can't express how incredible the food is here. And as I said, it's massively cheaper than other regions in Italy and you get to be by the coast. If you're considering moving to Italy - I would recommend looking into Liguria because you have the best of everything. If you want more info I'm happy to share my experience!

    Just in case, even on holidays supermarket are open, at least up until noon. In Camaiore there's a small one, but if you drove a bit down toward he sea like Viareggio or Lido di Camaiore you could have found plenty.

    My car has 70hp and it gets up the hills here in Switzerland... so I kinda doubt that a new 500X can't get up the hill. Driving stick isn't too easy tho😅

      This guy obviously can’t drive a manual. All he has to do is play with the 1st and 2nd gear.

    The weather here in Michigan is either cold. Leek winters or beautiful summers filled with construction barrels. We’ve been leaving towards Portugal or Italy as well but put Portugal for cost of living for an expat and the weather🤌🏼 Roos voice reminds me of when grey use to do Voiceovers😭

    This is beautiful! In love . But too quiet , isn’t it ? Looking forward for the next video.
    Also, I’ll keep saying it - please please look at Madeira Island if you haven’t already! Even if it’s just for you to go and visit.. I think you’d love it . 😊

    Loved the video but agree that living up on a mountain is dreamy but not very practical. By the way, I'd suggest Torino as an Italian city for international families. It's still Italian, but also very European and you can reach the rest of Europe fairly easily from there. Plus, it's close to the Alps for a weekend getaway :)

    Hi! I'm Italian and I'm here because I'm learning true English and your videos help me a lot. I live between Tuscany, Latium and Umbria. Let me say that the place where you have been in not the "classic" Tuscany, you are a little far from Valdichiana, Chianti region and the most beautiful places. You should have chosen the South of Tuscany. The next time, visit Bolsena Lake and you tell me 🙂. Good luck for you.
