The cam is likely hardened and thus brittle to impacts like that. There is a big difference between metals that are strong/tough and metals that are hard/durable to wear (like a camshaft). I’m not surprised the cams broke under those type of load scenarios.

FD2 is the type r version of the FA5 civic SI. It was mainly sold in Japan and the FN2 is the same year as the FD2 but it has the really weird 2dr body style and was mainly sold in Europe. They both had K20. The FD2 had the K20A and the FN2 had the K20Z4.
All cam shafts are fragile. I used to build circle track Chevy 350 engines and my mentor always said NEVER drop a cam as it will crack or shatter. No matter what make or model they are all fragile.

Ok from someone who used to work in a factory where I was working in Honda and ford cams we had MANY that would break in transport or a machine error. They break like chopsticks and it's because they are hardened like crazy to prevent wear. Whistlin deisels video showed nothing but the truth of how weak cams truly are. We had to do tests on them ever 100 camshafts and one of them was to check the density of the metal and a machine applied pressure to the center until it cracked of started loosing pressure and its really not that much surprisingly

The difference is that in cast structures, there are many sharp edges within the piece making it easy to fracture. When something is forged, the grain structure is actually structured to prevent that. Hence the increase priced and the name.
The k series in the integra is the way to go. They are so much more controllable with higher horsepower compared to a civic and make sick track cars because they are so planted with the extra weight. And the b18c swap into the civic just makes sense because you have it and it’s the best b series and can make 300hp reliably with stock internals. And fun Honda fact the b16b is just a destroked b18c with a different crank and rods but use the same block and head
Being a tech in the trade its so refreshing to see other techs doing it right .. Draining the A.C the right way and most of all vacuum evacuating the fluids p.s and all . Clean techs that like clean workspaces and clean hands
Just here for the cam test… figured it would be the same result. The torque applied to hold them down it so light. Plus they do not see the amplified force of leverage like when swinging as a 2 ft wand.

FA5 (si sedan) and FG2 (si coupe) both came with the k20z3 and 6 speed lsd transmission. They where offered from 2006-2011. FD2 is the 8th gen CTR in Japan, came with the K20A I believe. A lot of people use the z3 head and transmission and mate it with a k24 block to get the extra displacement and torque. Not too expensive either…
Cast cams are fine for moderate street applications but if get into putting stiffer valve springs and running higher compression and higher rpms you should probably look into getting a billet cam made from quality hardened billet material because of the added stresses on the valve train.
Finally someone on YT pulling a B series out of DC/EG/EK chassis from the bottom. Amazed how much harder people make it going out the top with a hoist.
B18c swapping the ek9 will make the ek9 worth having. That matched with 98 dc2 1st 2nd 3rd gear and 96 4th and 5th gear and 4.7 final drive. That car would be crazy

02-06 is dc5, 03-05 is Ep3, 06-11 is fg2/ fa5, 12-15 is fg4/ fb6. Fd8 is like the jdm version of the fa5 in other countries. A lot of Honda boys like to swap the fd8 stuff onto the fa5.
Its most likely an alloy, but cast iron is known for those behaviors. Slow pressure and torsion it can handle, ESPECIALLY compression. And yes, hard shocks will shatter/crack cast iron.

I have an 8th gen Si In the usa the sedan is FA5 and the coupe is FG2. In Japan the type R was FD2R and the mugen RR was FD2RR. the stock japanese sedan was FD2......You can also get Acura CSX's in canada and those are FD2's
Cams break easily because they're made to be hard, hard=brittle. I broke a comp cam installing it because something seated wrong and I was tired and rushing. I'm usually really careful, and had JUST thought 'weird this bolt shouldn't be hard to turn' when it snapped. Hardness is the most important characteristic for a cam, you don't want the lobes to wear and any deflection of the line would cause imprecise lift, so the metal is made as hard as possible.

My teacher took a stock Chevy 350 cam and dropped it about 4 feet vertically and obviously it’s completely fine, then he dropped it horizontally and it broke right in half. we dropped a b series skunk2 stage2 cams back in the day and it also broke in half (table height) and we thought skunk2 are dog shit so we asked a friend of ours who specialized on steel and told us that most of the camshaft aftermarket or stock will break like this. i forgot his detailed explanation coz that was a looooong time ago. he said it's like a human bone, it's tough and all but also fragile if you're not using it the right way. that's all i can remember.😅

i use to strip cars for a living and learned that all overhead cams would snap pretty easy with a 4 ft prybar. made it easy to break it down
You end up with a better engine putting LS crank and rods in a B16B than messing with a B18C5. Higher compression and more displacement.

Fd2 is what Japan got when Europe got the fn2. Quickest and best handling k series car. Put the b18 in the ek9, perfect motor for it

FD2R’s are FA5’s in the US, just not type R’s. They’re only sedans, and hands down one of the best Si/Type R chassis imo.

You are seriously putting a smaller intercooler on Dustin’s car simply because you don’t want to have to fabricate a new intake pipe?! You are seriously telling your customer to downgrade his intercooler simply because you don’t want to spend the time to weld up a new intake pipe, which you will do anyways and not show, and charge him for a less capable intercooler and fabrication of intake which he doesn’t need! we dropped a b series skunk2 stage2 cams back in the day and it also broke in half (table height) and we thought skunk2 are dog shit so we asked a friend of ours who specialized on steel and told us that most of the camshaft aftermarket or stock will break like this. i forgot his detailed explanation coz that was a looooong time ago. he said it's like a human bone, it's tough and all but also fragile if you're not using it the right way. that's all i can remember.😅

yh Tommy there was a FD2 but I think it was only sold in Japan and then there was the FN2 in europe.
I thought it was weird in WDs video that he was surprised the cam was breaking when he smacked it on a rock lol. They aren’t treated to be soft or flexible or absorb impacts. I’m glad this video was made!
