The cam is likely hardened and thus brittle to impacts like that. There is a big difference between metals that are strong/tough and metals that are hard/durable to wear (like a camshaft). I’m not surprised the cams broke under those type of load scenarios.

They break like chopsticks and it's because they are hardened like crazy to prevent wear. Whistlin deisels video showed nothing but the truth of how weak cams truly are. We had to do tests on them ever 100 camshafts and one of them was to check the density of the metal and a machine applied pressure to the center until it cracked of started loosing pressure and its really not that much surprisingly

The way the grain structure of cast pieces has a large effect on how they break, or in reality cease to absorb or move.
The difference is that in cast structures, there are many sharp edges within the piece making it easy to fracture.
When something is forged, the grain structure is actually structured to prevent that. Hence the increase priced and the name.

They are so much more controllable with higher horsepower compared to a civic and make sick track cars because they are so planted with the extra weight. And the b18c swap into the civic just makes sense because you have it and it’s the best b series and can make 300hp reliably with stock internals. B18c swapping the ek9 will make the ek9 worth having. That matched with 98 dc2 1st 2nd 3rd gear and 96 4th and 5th gear and 4.7 final drive. That car would be crazy

All cam shafts you have to be careful with. It’s not a jdm, American, boat, motorcycle, Briggs and Stratton thing. They are brittle to a strike. Reasons like those WD videos is why I hit the not interested button when he pops up. Just like your buddy DDE, lol

Its most likely an alloy, but cast iron is known for those behaviors. Slow pressure and torsion it can handle, ESPECIALLY compression. And yes, hard shocks will shatter/crack cast iron.

Cams break easily because they're made to be hard, hard=brittle.
I broke a comp cam installing it because something seated wrong and I was tired and rushing. I'm usually really careful, and had JUST thought 'weird this bolt shouldn't be hard to turn' when it snapped.
Hardness is the most important characteristic for a cam, you don't want the lobes to wear and any deflection of the line would cause imprecise lift, so the metal is made as hard as possible.

I really don’t understand why it’s so surprising to everyone that a cam will break like that. I learned that in my first auto mechanics class in high school. My teacher took a stock Chevy 350 cam and dropped it about 4 feet vertically and obviously it’s completely fine, then he dropped it horizontally and it broke right in half. They aren’t made for forces horizontally.

You are seriously putting a smaller intercooler on Dustin’s car simply because you don’t want to have to fabricate a new intake pipe?! You are seriously telling your customer to downgrade his intercooler simply because you don’t want to spend the time to weld up a new intake pipe, which you will do anyways and not show, and charge him for a less capable intercooler and fabrication of intake which he doesn’t need! That’s some great customer service right there boy!! Your so awesome Tommy!!! I know you already know that though…

we dropped a b series skunk2 stage2 cams back in the day and it also broke in half (table height) and we thought skunk2 are dog shit so we asked a friend of ours who specialized on steel and told us that most of the camshaft aftermarket or stock will break like this. i forgot his detailed explanation coz that was a looooong time ago. he said it's like a human bone, it's tough and all but also fragile if you're not using it the right way. that's all i can remember.😅
