  • A before and after video of the Goethals Bridge between Elizabeth, NJ and Staten Island, NY. The earlier (top) video was filmed in July 2010, and the recent (bottom) video in June 2018. This video demonstrates the changes that have taken place to this area during this time period.
The original Goethals Bridge built in 1928 has been replaced by the new Goethals Bridge, fully opened to traffic on May 20, 2018. The $1.5 billion contract was awarded in 2013 and was constructed by a joint venture contracting team of Kiewit-Weeks-Massman (KWM).

The Old Goethals Bridge was one of my favorite bridges growing up, going over it to visit my grandmother. I was sad when they tore it down, but at least I can say that the New Goethals Bridge is also beautiful, and is a good successor to the old one, with more lane space for drivers. I can't wait to get the chance to drive over the new one.

i drove it but the problem is shaping up to go thru the tools. they should remove the easy pass boots with tight lane restrictions and put the cameras overhead. its confusing because it like driving into a funnel. the bridge is great. i remember the old Goethals bridge from the 50s

While it was sad to see the old bridge go down, the new Gothals bridge looks really nice

A vast improvement which was long overdue.

I visited the area last summer after having been away for several years, and was shocked at how different the new bridge is. The old crossing felt precarious while the new one feels effortless. Night and day. This video captures that fantastically well.

I like the new Goethals Bridge the best, the old one was too tight and narrow in my opinion.

@@roadwaywiz Through work with the PANYNJ, I haven't gotten any answers other than they now say June '19, but it was originally supposed to be August '18.
