    Hey, just wanted to say that this was a super fun and informational video on the differences between the versions! I saw a pop up pirate game, and was curious on how they worked. Taking them apart to show the mechanisms definitely satiated my curiosity, but I felt so teased when you were doing the test to show how the older version did a pseudo-random approach lol.

    i worked out the modern version wasn't random even as a really young kid but i'm not sure if i ever realised that you can turn the pirate. fascinating to see how an ingenious product was so heavily dumbed down yet still thrived through being mass advertised and easy birthday present fodder.

    Fun fact: Apparently there was a Palitoy Bradgate version of Pop Up Pirate that had the same design and mechanism as the Action GT version of Pop Up Pirate, only this time in the Palitoy Bradgate version, the barrel didn’t have a base to screw into, which is exactly like in the versions we currently have today, and basically the red clothes of the pirate were yellow.

    Here in Brazil they still use the old design. I'm playing with my son right now, and he got it for his birthday two years ago. It's the exact same design I used to play back in the early eighties.

    • @AtticRaidersRetroReviews
      @AtticRaidersRetroReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, that's weird! I thought that only the newer design was being made these days. It is an official Pop Up Pirate game or some type of off-brand version?

    • @truehare
      @truehare 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AtticRaidersRetroReviews it's semi official, you could say. It's made by Estrela, the biggest toy maker in the country, and they usually license games from the original makers. They are also the ones who manufacture and sell the Brazilian version of Monopoly, for example.
      They had discontinued Pula Pirata (the Brazilian name for the game) around the end of the 90s or so, and brought it back recently, so I guess the old design is a way to play to our nostalgia.

    Nah. Never had one but after watching this I can claim the newer is definitely better, provided two crucial conditions are met, that is: First and foremost it's paramount that you have a spare pirate or in its defect, device a tool which enables you to spin the mechanism at will. Then you use another pirate with his base/"feet" cut down so you can place it pointing in any direction without giving away the actual solution/trap to the thing (maybe this step is not needed if you just place it softly, would need to experiment with that). The only drawback would be that a third person should set the mechanism to make it fairer. A solution to that could be implemented using a special tool to spin the mechanism, you could also cover the 'first' pirate in some way while turning him, etc.
    The 1985 one has two big drawbacks imho. One being that you can never set the pirate off with a single thrust, thus, completely losing the thrill of the first go. The other disadvantage and most off-putting is that if you concentrate on the feel of the swords as you are slotting them in, it looks as if you would tell right away the pattern. A solution to that could be that you could agree with your opponent beforehand that swords should be thrusted in a swiftly fashion to avoid 'revealing feels.
    Thanks for the video, you solved one of the mysteries which have been lurking in my mind all these years. Next one to transcendence is the biting dog pressing teeth thingy...

    • @AtticRaidersRetroReviews
      @AtticRaidersRetroReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's an interesting work around. I still prefer the older model, but yes, I agree that those are drawbacks to it.

    • @RetroMaticGamer
      @RetroMaticGamer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The notches you can see on the sword blades are actually clip-like protrusions, which make you have to apply enough force to "snap" the sword in, so you can't feel the mechanism until it's too late.

    • @antilogis6204
      @antilogis6204 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RetroMaticGamer Too late to avoid the snap but just on time to avoid setting the pirate off and that's exactly my point, you just need to feel it the first time, cuz you always need at least a second sword, Did you see it's a two/three-step mechanism, right?
      Arguably a more complex mechanism but a total giveaway slash party pooper. Too much plastic and triggers to rely on to conceal that many intricacies, I'm starting to think they wanted to go the extra mile and regretted later.

    • @xtremespotzu
      @xtremespotzu ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably the only mod needed for the newer version would be to have the pirate have lots of slits underneath, rather than just two. There's a 3D printed randomizer for that.

    Kinda annoying, but I’m able to attain randomness by first inserting the pirate and spinning him around a few times, then taking him out and spinning around the barrel, then putting the pirate back in without spinning him.
