I love the tumeric and pepper combo idea. I'm going to add that to my meals! I also use the flax meal which has good omega-3 content. I also use chia seeds. I now add tomato sauce with some avocado to my black beans and brown rice foundation. The tomato sauce has lycopenes. You do NOT get lycopenes from uncooked tomatoes! Lycopenes are one of the strongest free radical molecule scavengers. Free radical molecules wreak havoc by altering all kinds of cellular molecules including DNA. Studies have shown reduced risk for cancer with higher lycopene absorption. However, lycopenes are fat soluble and need some fat to allow for adequate absorption, thus the avocado. Add some high ranked ANDI score vegetables and you have a great meal.
Orange ones are sweet potatoes. They are sweet so you can use that as a guide too. In Jamaica (caribbean) we have two types. One that looks very yellow when cooked (we call it yellow heart) is the sweetest of the two. The other is yellow too, just not as yellow or as sweet.
Sweet potatoes are Ipomoea batatas. In certain areas of the USA and other places (like where Simmett lives), a type of sweet potato is called a yam. True yams belong to the Dioscorea spp. and are climbing viny plants mainly grown in the tropics.

Orange is the sweet potato the yam is white... when I lived down south sometimes we would refer to them as yams when in fact they were sweet potatoes and when I first had African yams that's when I knew the difference because my ex-wife used to cook them three times a week because she knew I loved them so much...they were not as sweet as the sweet potato but when she pounded yam into fufu (futu banan) and made some maffé(lamb in a peanut based gravy) the yams were lovely...of course you could use tofu instead of lamb for a truly vegan african dish.

Somewhere I read that true yams are rare to find in a Canadian grocery store, and that the orange fleshed and white fleshed tubers are both just different varieties of sweet potato, but for simplicity of marketing the orange fleshed variety they're called "yams".
Was I the only one that was waiting for hime to say, ok now I’m going to head to work....Lmaoo but you kept saying ok now I’m going to step outside and built my appetite for my next meal.

Just made that frozen berry dessert and that is seriously delicious! The only difference I did was I used 1 banana and I added some chia seeds. The greens adds a fresh clean taste to everything. Try it out all!
Rosa Hernandez plz don’t do research on people on TH-cam talking about the obvious faults within the diet. I would suggest a well balanced omnivorous diet. It’s a fad that many people suffer because of.
Great video man. Just started to change my diet and working on a clean meal plan. This gave me some new inspiration to give my meals a twist. Love how you use Miso to put it on toast. Never thought of that. Looking forward to check it out.
So Sweet potatoes are exactly what they say they are.. sweet potatoes. It tends to be a culinary blanket term for any potato that is sweet. Many markets will have "sweet potatoes", purple sweet potatoes, yams, and more. the sweet potatoes tend to be their own variety as well and have a lighter orange skin than yams, they tend to be sweeter and less starchy. however many places will mix them so it can be difficult to tell sometimes. sweet potatoes tend to have more vitamins but other than that they are pretty similar. hope that helps!
Daaaaaaym that smoothie bowl looks awesome! I'm gona try making that... it's hard to find plant protein powder here though (Medellin, CO) but I'll give er a go thanks!

I'm positive we will have it soon. Medellin is an amazing city for vegans in Colombia.
You can call them yams or sweet potato, it depends on your location. I’m Nigerian so in Western African yams are a lot bigger, white flesh tubers which look similar to cassava (or yuca/manioc as Latinos and French people would call them). The smaller white yam you have on your plate is, if I’m not mistaken, Japanese yam.
That sweet, orange-colored root vegetable that you love so dearly is actually a sweet potato. Yes, all so-called “yams” are in fact sweet potatoes. Most people think that long, red-skinned sweet potatoes are yams, but they really are just one of many varieties of sweet potatoes. On a side note, chipotle & paprika both add bitterness, I only know this from making chili
Much love for coco, your humble and simple personality , also your girlfriend makes and amazing bonded couple , thanks for sharing ur knowledge , I am learning a lot and love ur cooking style 😻
Here in Brazil, we have 3 colors of sweet potatos, white, purple (most common and cheap) and the same orange one! Yeah, we called these orange veggies sweet potatoes too.
You are the most vegan fitness guy I’ve seen on TH-cam you eat super healthy but what about your protein intake?? And if you can I would like to see your macros, carbs, fat, protein, fiber, and calories. I try not to eat too much fruit for they have a good amount of sugar.
He has a few videos covering his macros. You can also watch people like hench herbivore who consistently cover macros and explain why he chooses the foods found in each meal he prepares. (This food provides me with iodine, this food is a great source of this vitamin, this food provides so and so). I can link some specific videos from each if you are still curious.
So refreshing to watch! Compared to some meat eaters that are angry and put other people down. Such negativity surrounding them. Keep bringing on the wonderful videos. :)
It’s sweet potato, my fellow vegan. People in SEA ate them during WWII due to the lack of the food. Yam is larger than a sweet potato, it’s circular on the outside and purple inside.
Also, it’s been 14 days since I’ve adopted a plant-based diet and I AM LOVING AND ENJOYING IT! 😆 it also made me realized how much I don’t know about cooking in the kitchen 😅😂
I think they're both sweet potatoes, in the south Pacific it's called Kumara or Kumala and yams are called Ufi a non sweet starchy vegetable that is kind of like taro but has white flesh and more dense texture than a potato.
Yo while you're here i'm curious on how i can pack in the calories i know i'm not getting enough in a day sometimes. i'm 6'2" and 60kg. i know i'm under but always been slender and find it so hard to gain weight! i lost a bit of weight in face and want to get more filled out.
Struan 1210 I know you didn’t ask me but I’m at least a nutrition student 🤷♀️ but honestly my best advice would just be more higher calorie foods instead of the core being something like nonstarchy and or green veg. That’s a very healthful way to eat but it does promote more weight loss. More nuts, seeds, nut butters, beans, sort of heartier things. Not that you have to have super dense meals, you should always try to get in as much nutrition to nourish your body as much as possible. Hope this could’ve helped. Good luck to you.
I think different regions call them different things for example Eggplant (US) and Aubergine (UK). When I lived in the Puget sound near Seattle. Yams were the Orange ones and Sweet Potatoes were white. However, living in the south near Nashville Tn they call the orange ones sweet potatoes and I have never seen the white variety sold here.
Not enough. No but seriusly. The first meal was basicly ju protein power and a little bit of granola. a normal scoop protein powder usually lands around 30g. Let's higball and say first meal was 40g. Second meal: Bread usually ahve around 12g protein per 100g. And one slice is about 40g. And the rest of the sandwichi was basicly protein free so let's say that meal was about 10g protein. And that last meal, basicly the beans and the peas where the only protein source, and the tahini. Let's say that meal was 200g beans and 200g peas. that's around 30g protein. And the tahini? Gonna guess aprox 10g in that. And then we add on the onions/mushroom etc. (which is basicly 0 protein, around 1-1.5 per 100g. I'd estimate that whole day of eating to be around 90g of protein or so. which isn't much if you try to build muscle.
@@LazyYes You dont need high protein to build muscle. Things like you need a gram of protein per pound of bodyweight is bs. Anywhere from 90-120 grams of protein for a natural bodybuilder is enough
@@NoName-ng9uv My point is you dont need high protein to build mass. Even with 90-120grams pf protein per day with all the vitamins and nutrients provided you can build muscle with proper workout and enough sleep
We call the orange-fleshed vegetable you used a Kumara in Aotearoa (New Zealand). I believe that this is the same as a sweet potato in your part of the world. A yam looks quite different here - smaller, more knobbly.
The ones we buy in the USA are actually sweet potatoes. I heard that a true yam requires special processing before cooking and therefore if you are in another country, don't try preparing a 'yam' there like a sweet potato here.
Biology major to the rescue: to the untrained eye yams and sweet potatoes are the same, in color and taste for the most part. Somewhere I read that true yams are rare to find in a Canadian grocery store, and that the orange fleshed and white fleshed tubers are both just different varieties of sweet potato, but for simplicity of marketing the orange fleshed variety they're called "yams".
Miles Olsen That’s right. Yams are a totally different vegetable. You can find many varieties in Caribbean food shops.
Was I the only one that was waiting for hime to say, ok now I’m going to head to work....Lmaoo
but you kept saying ok now I’m going to step outside and built my appetite for my next meal.
Living the dream
man, who hurt you?
He literally said he’s gonna do work on his laptop 04:46
Please do a video about the raw granola recipe!! 😍👍🏼 Would be really nice! Thanks! ✌🏼😎
Yes please!!!!!
Yes please sounds delicious!!
Starting my vegan journey tomorrow because of you, and will be seeking tips real soon.
Beginner vegan here. I am hoping practicing veganism will help prevent my gout flare ups due to the substitution of animal proteins. Just made that frozen berry dessert and that is seriously delicious! The only difference I did was I used 1 banana and I added some chia seeds. The greens adds a fresh clean taste to everything. Try it out all!
Just made your avocado toast!! Omg! Bomb!!! Loving your recipes Derek! Thank you for sharing!
I lov your what I eat in a day vids. Keep me coming.
Your cooking skills inspire me to become vegan!
Rosa Hernandez plz don’t do research on people on TH-cam talking about the obvious faults within the diet. I would suggest a well balanced omnivorous diet. It’s a fad that many people suffer because of.
Derek, I wish I could hangout with you for a month, and see my lifestyle improve and become more fit! You're inspirational, love your amazing videos!
this guy’s the man
him and Rich Roll are the most successful vegan in my humble opinion.
I watch both their channels regularly
“Don’t run away, I’m friendly” 😂 relatable
11:34 "Here are some spices I'm going to add, COCO!" I was reading a text message at that point and I literally thought wtf? Coco? In a stir-fry?
Hahaha this made me giggle 😂🤣
@KING KONG 🖕
Khan now guys, thats enough
This all looks delicious and it’s making us hungry!
Many markets will have "sweet potatoes", purple sweet potatoes, yams, and more. the sweet potatoes tend to be their own variety as well and have a lighter orange skin than yams, they tend to be sweeter and less starchy. however many places will mix them so it can be difficult to tell sometimes. sweet potatoes tend to have more vitamins but other than that they are pretty similar. hope that helps!
this was an amazing vegan video!! so inspired
Daaaaaaym that smoothie bowl looks awesome! I'm gona try making that... it's hard to find plant protein powder here though (Medellin, CO) but I'll give er a go thanks!
I'm positive we will have it soon. Medellin is an amazing city for vegans in Colombia.
Crystal, being the intellectual she is, is right about the orange flesh one being the sweet potato.
She had to think hard there eh?
They are both sweet potatoes, just different varieties.
Love these types of videos!!
I don't know why he keeps forgetting to be shirtless.
Sounds like a comment Shredded Sports Science would make about him in a video peer reviewing him
No complaints here.
GAAAAAAAY!
Lol 😂
🤣
Thought this guy had a suspiciously mid-islander (BC) vibe, then he pulls up in Coombs 💪🇨🇦
Damn! Im using most of the ingredients to. Never thought of a toast combined with miso, mustard, avocado and spring union.
Dinner looked great!!
Komal Kaur yeah man luv the cat
You are the most vegan fitness guy I’ve seen on TH-cam you eat super healthy but what about your protein intake?? And if you can I would like to see your macros, carbs, fat, protein, fiber, and calories. I try not to eat too much fruit for they have a good amount of sugar.
He has a few videos covering his macros. You can also watch people like hench herbivore who consistently cover macros and explain why he chooses the foods found in each meal he prepares. (This food provides me with iodine, this food is a great source of this vitamin, this food provides so and so). I can link some specific videos from each if you are still curious.
One of his videos 2017 was amazing
It showed so much info
So refreshing to watch! Compared to some meat eaters that are angry and put other people down. Such negativity surrounding them. Keep bringing on the wonderful videos. :)
It’s sweet potato, my fellow vegan. People in SEA ate them during WWII due to the lack of the food. Yam is larger than a sweet potato, it’s circular on the outside and purple inside.
More food-related videos please! 😍🙏🏻💚🌱😋
Okay great. Will do!
Also, it’s been 14 days since I’ve adopted a plant-based diet and I AM LOVING AND ENJOYING IT! 😆 it also made me realized how much I don’t know about cooking in the kitchen 😅😂
10:33 the cat has the "really bruh?" face 😂
Sweet potatoes are orange yams are white
I think they're both sweet potatoes, in the south Pacific it's called Kumara or Kumala and yams are called Ufi a non sweet starchy vegetable that is kind of like taro but has white flesh and more dense texture than a potato.
orange is sweet potato white is yam
loved this video was very wholesome and pure
I can see this being possible on the weekend.
But seriously I have a job I don’t have 10 hours of free time

I love how you keep bloopers in videos haha "COCO"
Oh I cut most of them out. Haha, it would be a slapstick comedy if not. lol.
Is also the cat vegan?
Great quality video 🌱✌️
Great vid. All those dishes look delicious and will be stealing those recipes! 👍🏻👍🏻
When you put the mushrooms in a nice beat came on
Both yams and your sweet potatoes are called Kumara is you live in New Zealand 😂 so I add a third variable to the mix!
@@AliiceFrances Yeah NZ yams look like huge maggots hahaha
Lol was thinking they're just kumara! Love NZ.
How many grams of protein is this??
@@vectork3 you need that to keep your muscle mass
@@NoName-ng9uv My point is you dont need high protein to build mass. Even with 90-120grams pf protein per day with all the vitamins and nutrients provided you can build muscle with proper workout and enough sleep
Ice cold lemon water in the morning is a good way to boost your metabolism. Helps when you eat a lot meats.
We call the orange-fleshed vegetable you used a Kumara in Aotearoa (New Zealand). I believe that this is the same as a sweet potato in your part of the world. A yam looks quite different here - smaller, more knobbly.
I'm Australian and we call them sweet potatoes. But if you calls them Yams, call them yams ✌.
That smoothie would cost about £50 to make in the uk.
-- yep
waitwhat, why? (dutchie here)
U mean 5?
Orange one is sweet potato here in Australia or Kumara in New Zealand Really love your videos Thanks for the inspiration & Coco is gorgeous 😍
The ones we buy in the USA are actually sweet potatoes. I heard that a true yam requires special processing before cooking and therefore if you are in another country, don't try preparing a 'yam' there like a sweet potato here.
Very simply, that food looked awesome! And the miso/avocado/mustard base for the sandwich is something that I will try tomorrow. Thanks!
I love how the cat just keeps interrupting....lol! :P
