Just wanted to say: I’ve also been on an Harpsichord quest for years and when i heard the intro i thought: This guy digs Stratovarius, i’ve found the right guy.
Cool video, Alex! The SRX Orchestra harpsichord sounds the best to me as well. As a lover of classical instrumentation myself, I would be interested in more videos like this. Tough ones for me have been finding good church/cathedral organ and solo violin sounds.
If you use KONTAKT, there are a few libraries that I know of. There are the Lakeside Pipe Organ and Alpha Organ libraries from Soundiron for organs, and the Friedlander Solo Violin and Joshua Bell Violin libraries from Embertone. These are just libraries that I know of, there might be better options out there.
Robert thanks man! I wanted to make sure I did something different from what’s out there but still good to watch, informative and somewhat entertaining. I’m still working out the kinks but it seems the direction I’m going is good!
Hmmmm. I agree that the SRX has the best sound, but I also love the sort of warm, fuzzy vibe of the Korg Kronos harpsichord. Gonna have to snag both :)
Thanks for this vid! Helped me a bunch, and was straight to the point. What's crazy is when I first started playing/making nusic I only wanted like 3 sounds/ instruments. Now I'm here looking for intruments I didn't think I would ever use XD --Again, thanks a bunch!
… if you are a real (pro) harpsichord player. I don’t play often, very amateur, and my real harpsichord, when I finally have time, is always out of tune (weather), or some key blocks, or there is some friction, or a delrin snaps, or a string breaks… I just have no time and energy to keep it in shape. I might buy this solution to practice, so that I don’t have to put my time into side issues.
The real ones have a bunch of "stops" on top of a huge gamut of tone. No synth harpi will hold a candle to the real thing (if a nice one) in the same room, just like pianos. There are some pretty good hammond clonewheels, but there is a reason why you see a constant quest for the best digital pianos and harpsiechords: speaker cones of whatever size cannot emulate a sound board in the same room. But they can certainly be fun to play and it's well worth knowing what you like. Thank you for interesting video. I suggest you chase "partimento" to see some really great sounding harpsichords on the tube. Also how there had to be a revival to regain the sound quality of the 1700s. The folks playing often have great digital suggestions.
I greatly appreciate this video and bought SRX Orchestra on your recommendation! I would also recommend, if you're interested, to look into Cineharpsichord from Cinesamples. It's sounds so real, it's crazy! Literally the best sound I've found without purchasing a real harpsichord. I bought it like a month ago, and felt like I should come back to this video to inform you if you were still interested in this subject. Love your videos man, keep rocking! 🤘
I just checked it out and you are right! It is awesome! But it does have a different tone to it. Depending on what I need the harpischord for I could still see myself choosing the SRX one over it. But yeah, thanks for letting me know about it! I appreciate it! I think I will be using the Cinesamples one quite a bit :)
The JV1080's internal ROM harpsi is indeed very good, as is the SRX. Soniccouture also have very decent French and Flemish harpsichords (for Kontakt) as part of their Conservatoire collection. I just discovered that Cinesamples do one called CineHarpsichord (Kontakt again), which sounds extremely good in their walkthrough video and audio demos - worth checking out.
Loved the Video! Quick Question: whats the name of the Harpsichord VST for Kontakt that you used? I Checked my Kontakt Komplete and didn't see any hapsichords listed there I have the Regular Komplete 13 (maybe i need to upgrade to the ultimate)
Just wondering if you've heard the RealSamples German Harpsichord almost 3GB with round robin. I just purchased it and I'm not knocked out by it yet still editing. Thanks for your work very helpful. David Bantle
Thanks for the comparison; I'm a little late to the party! 👍In my experience, though, that's by no means a definitive list of the best sounding harpsichord VSTis available, even for 2020. I used to like to use the Kontakt factory one for years, until I fell in love with XPERIMENTA Harpsichord, especially when doing baroquesque stuff. I also regard the demos of Cineharpsichord and Spitfire harpsichord comparably convincing, even though I have yet to try them out myself. 😊 - Eero
There's a little one calles retromagix harpsichord, which is not bad, but I don't know how up to date it is nowadays, also a freebie called darksichord, not too bad
SRX sounds the best and Kronos sounds like a toy! Too bad SRX is available as VSTi only on Roland cloud, personally I am not a big fan of monthly subscriptions, I guess I should not have sold my Roland JV2080. Great video, as a metalhead and JRPG fan I recognized both intro and outro music :)
hey alex, do the keys on the S61 hinge nicely near the back end of the black key? this is a real deal breaker for me . i see you've have a fantom X , thats a great example of a black key thats hinged properly allowing you to easily play high up on the black key with equal pressure as played on the tip( roland and yamaha so a great job with this on thier high end workstations ). also is that a MK2? great playing man seems we both share a love for Mitsuda . take care
Hey there! Yeah, I have the S61 Mk2 which I think is quite a bit better than the Mk1. As for the hinge near the back, yes they do press down nicely and easily! Pretty much all other MIDI controllers I have used have really poor hinges where when you play near the top of the key, it feels like you are barely pressing down on it. This was actually one of the main reasons why I ended up with the S61 Mk2 as my main controller. It's similar to the Fantom X but I actually think I like the S61MK2 more! And yes, im a huge fan of Mitsuda :)
Yeah the SRX was definitely the best and Kronos def the worst. The Kronos sounds like the harpsichord from played in the towns in Final Fantasy 3 for the Super Nintendo.
I have myself Moddart Pianoteq Stage 6 that feature two superb harpsichords: a 1733 Blanchet and a 1697 Grimaldi, based on the physical modeling technology. To my opinion, these are better of all the harpsichords you have played. Nice music piece though and nice playing.
th-cam.com/video/nL4zx0-mi14/w-d-xo.html it has 4' 8' Lute and two Manuals. AND it even was a free software a few years ago ;) still have the good old Version
Thiago Dal Poz Music yeah me too! I have one that’s fully in software too. No one can tell the difference between mine and Jens :D. I would love to hear yours!
There is pretty much no keyboard in the entry-level price point with a good harpsichord :(, not a new one at least. That being said, if you don't mind finding an older keyboard. The Kurzweil PC161 goes for around $300 and has an awesome harpsichord! So I would maybe look into that.
I’ve got the best solution for you. I’m a harpsichord enthusiast, I’ve always been interested in learning baroque and renaissance keyboard pieces but I can’t afford an expensive keyboard. Even if I did they tend not to have good harpsichord sounds. So I got a cheap entry level keyboard with good action (Roland FP-10) and connected it to my iPad which had a good harpsichord sound app (Historic Harpsichords - Ruckers) and Zell Harpsichord. Hope that helps
Thanks for the video, the SRX certainly sounds the fattest. Completely unrelated question, but what midi controller would you get for a grand piano feel under $1,000? I'm leaning towards the SL88 at the moment.
SL88 Grand is probably the best one for under $1000. But for $100 more than the SL88 Grand you can get the Roland A-88MKII which is pretty much better in every single way but it costs exactly $1000. If both are a little more than you would like to spend, the normal SL88 is probably your best bet. It still have good piano feel, just not as good as the other 2.
Halion 6 sounded the best out of those. Toss some reverb on it. I listen to a metric shitload of historically informed Baroque music. THIS is the sound you need to compare against: th-cam.com/video/JXi79RGTXiA/w-d-xo.html Zenology one actually sounds objectively the most realistic, but with a buff stop or lute stop applied. See if there's a setting to remove the stop, because it's clearly modeled after a muted instrument.
why is the release so fake? on a real harpsichord the plectra have to slip by the string, producing a slight harmonic buzz. this effect is very noticeable. all of these instruments sound soulless and unorganic tbh
Alex Rocks! Great guy and great channel!!
This Korg keyboard sounds OKAY, but the Roland C-30 electric harpsichord sounds MUCH BETTER.
The C-30 is excellent. It also has the feel of a real harpsichord with the keybed design. And the positive organ sounds and forte piano are a bonus.
Harpsichords are metal AF
Thanks glenn! I agree!
Even organ
I am here a year later... I am glad I am here. I wish I was there.
I will play my harpsichord for you any time Andy :)
@@alexnasla Thanks man! I look forward to it!
This was INSANELY helpful! Harpsichord is my favorite instrument and I've been trying to find the best sounding one forever. Thank you so much!!
Just wanted to say: I’ve also been on an Harpsichord quest for years and when i heard the intro i thought: This guy digs Stratovarius, i’ve found the right guy.
lol yep :D
Stratovarius - Black Diamond :)))))
You should try the 1720 Blanchet by Soni Musicae for Kontakt. It's free but it's extremely good!
The best by far.
finally, i found this kind of instrumental name
Goddammit!!!! Didn't expect to hear Stratovarius!!! That really got me!
me as well! I started playing music thanks to them and know ı am classical pianist. quite a joyful surprise
I agree with you. Harpsichord from Roland JV1080 (Orchestral expansion) is amazing and the best one ever
The best digital sounds that imitates greatly an acoustic harpsichord. Wow!!
To me the best hands-down is Orchestral tools Berlín Harpsichord

Stock Yamaha harpsichord sounds are pretty sweet nowadays. Much better that most of the samples you have.
Yamaha has awesome harpsichord sounds even their cheap keyboards have a very decent Harpsichord sound :)
This channel is so different then what i usually watch. It's a nice change of pace.
Robert thanks man! I wanted to make sure I did something different from what’s out there but still good to watch, informative and somewhat entertaining. I’m still working out the kinks but it seems the direction I’m going is good!

do you know what the best harpsichord is? a real one.

1 SRX 2 HALION but... try CineHarpsichord.
I agree with your findings.
wow, the Kronos sounded so bad

@5:00 yeah electronic instruments pre-sets are hit and miss, mos definately
It sounds good. But it still sounds electronic.
I have a friend that several owns several real harpsichords. I think the SRX comes closest to the sound of her double manual.
I discovered the harpsichord from Factory library thanks to you!
Absolutely awesome thank you for the information.

Yeah exactly! I have that expansion card too :)
This music is sooo beautiful
Korg one sounds more like a Clavinet
Amazing job. Thanks for this video

Personally... I like my actual harpsichord because of its organic lack of precision in tuning and ability to use different tunings.
Thank you for you upload but Halion has 5 Patches of the Harpsichord concert, ambient, baroque, room and key switch which one is you choice?
How could piece in intro?
did you just improv that off there?
what music did you study?
Depends on which part you are referring to :). I'm actually self-taught. Mostly learned classical style.
Stratovarius.

Can somebody tell me what the pieces/songs are called?
are those effects on all casio keyboards?

Pretty cool. Now let's see on both the hardware and software Roland keyboard some old school Bodom sounds and how to achieve them, eh? :D
