This way to get sand is a bit messy, but basically is just a bunch of directional warps to get the shapes. You can create the same-ish noise with less works. There are some example on Artstation, but I like the added control of this process.

Question: when would someone use the height channel ? like i create these complex materials so i dont have geometrie. bit using the height/displacement you need geo in the end in the finished 3d programm.... is that only for show so the material looks better in the preview?
