I know everyone says today's game is miles better in terms of possession and athleticism but I prefer watching this style, anyone else the same?

so what? possession but no substance, athleticism but no product whats the point?
Nowadays the game is so one sided that it isnt funny. Just look at the gap between the top teams and the bottom teams. The bottom half of teams have crap players unlike during the 90s and early 00s.

An Arsenal fan here but this game for me separated United and Arsenal in that period and why United won that year's title. Ferguson were able to elevate his players by instilling greater desire and in the end that was the difference.

Plus also United were allowed to cheat. First goal here a handball from Van Nistelrooy in the build up!

Arsenal should've been 2 up by the time united scored their goal that should've been disallowed. Ridiculous comment and you clearly don't remember the 02/03 season at all. Ps arsenal beat urd 2 nil at old Trafford in fa cup same season without henry, then won the fa cup, where was this greater desire in United then?

@nickkabbabe1953 Ok then take the goal off. Still won 1-0.
Now also take off ThierryHenry's offside brace vs ManUtd at Highbury that season (2nd was miles off) so that's a 0-2 win for ManUtd instead of a 2-2 draw.
Now ManUtd have won the 2002/03 title by 8 points instead of 5
And instead of ManUtd getting 35 points against the Top8 that season compared to Arsenal's measly 17 (less than half, 4 wins, 5 draws & 5 defeats with the last game being a 6-1 home win vs 8th Southampton in their last home game which made their record vs the Top8 look much better than it was when they first mathematically lost the title, but still bad) with a goal difference of just +1 in 14 games for Arsenal (21GD worse than ManUtd).
Arsenal now have 16pts vs the Top8 with -1 GD in 14 games
ManUtd now have 37pts vs Top8 (with +23 GD instead of +22)
      😂
Either way it's fair to say the best team won.
More evidence of that was ManUtd did better in ChampionsLeague YET AGAIN.

United were missing several key players including Keane, Beckham, Butt and Ferdinand through injuries but still manage to battle the defending Champions Arsenal to earn a hard-fought 2-0 win. Barthez became the first goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet against the Gunners who scored in 55 matches in a row bef coming to OT. While Veron and Scholes gained the headlines for the goal scored, United standout performer was Phil Neville in an unfamiliar central defensive midfield role. The younger Neville in the absence of Keane and Butt hounded Vieira like a crazed lunatic winning several tackles.

@@user-uh4ub4ke3t This is 2002-03 Season. Schmeichel already left United after the Treble in 1999. Scholes and Giggs played and Scholes scored in that game.

@@abdihalimosman1826You think Blanc was more important for ManUtd than Butt 😂
Butt was the obvious CM to play alongside Keane or Scholes or Veron, sometimes 3 or 4 of them would be on the pitch at the same time depending on the formation but not until this game did PhilNeville seem like a player capable of doing well in that area of the pitch but he played well and played there a lot for Everton after he left ManUtd 2 & a half years later.

It even looks offside. A hand ball and offside. But I'll say with the way VAR are recently the would say RVN's hand was in a natural position. But that offside would cancel it.

4:07 is a world away from today. Peter Drury on commentary is happy that it's about level and doesn't put any further attention on the offside. Nowadays we get the lines out for 5 minutes and Drury will agonise over the call.

When a defender is not sure of what's happening he just has to kick the ball away. That's a base rule of the role. Not knowing who is around you and what is the situation is a mistake (in fact he apologized), but it can happen, and if it does you just kick the ball away and avoid risks. In the heat of the moment Gary probably thought Henry could have followed up the ball, so he just ended the action as quick as possible.

I'm a United fan and as much as Ferguson prioritised attacking football, he was not modern at all in play style. His defenders were never encouraged to take risks. Even Rio Ferdinand, who was as comfortable on the ball as anyone you will see, was instructed to keep it very simply and never elaborate. Obviously Neville should be comfortable enough to play, but it wouldn't have been his instinct.

@@sacred1827 lol what the hell is even modern football?
Everyone is so obssessed with playing modern football that it became boring and one dimensional. Its no wonder there is a huge gap between the top and the rest. Teams who dont have the players to play 'modern' forced to play modern ended up getting buttfcked.
