  • New video, new line in 4K. We're looking at the Biel - La Chaux-de-Fonds railway today, which was opened to traffic on the 30th of April, 1874.
    If you watched the La Chaux-de-Fonds - Neuchâtel - Bern video, you may recall a picture of the historic junction in Convers, following the second tunnel after leaving La Chaux-de-Fonds. That is where this line joined said line and where trains had to change direction to reach La Chaux-de-Fonds. In 1888, the direct connection was completed, including the 1618 Meter Crosettes-Tunnel.
    The original connection, which was kept for military purposes until 1895, was then given up.
    Thanks to Andrea Lisa (the original Andrea) for recording this line for us.

    It always amazes me that the infrastructure of Swiss railways, including stations, are so open and not barricaded by highly ‘safe’ barriers and fences. How the livestock and wildlife, let alone children on their way to school, don’t fall foul of passing trains - when, eg, in the UK it seems overkill on safety fences are ‘de rigueur’ - confuses me. Great scenes and serenity! Thanks.

      Thanks. Yes, I really appreciate how open everything is too, especially industrial areas. Public walkways and trails often cross private property and farms without there ever being the need for warning signs.

      As an American, I noticed this too. I wonder if it has something to do with how much more common train travel is in so many European countries. Children there are probably raised to be careful around train tracks, much the same as kids in the U.S. are raised not to run into the street. We don’t put barricades on every road that has cars. I wish we had enough trains here to be more of the natural order of things.

      Difference between Roman law and Napoleonic law. Under Roman law the state is responsible for protecting its citizens. Under Napoleonic law the citizen is responsible for looking after themselves. United Kingdom (and therefore US) code is based on principles of Roman law. Elsewhere in Europe Napoleonic law is the usual basis for the code (not Scandinavia). Obviously this is a gross simplification, but it does point to the fundamentals.

    Thank you Andreas for taking me to another new part of Switzerland.
    I was amused to see, a couple of stops before the end, two kids - on scooter and bike - hurtling along to beat the level-crossing boom. They didn't!
    Also, it's great to see an undistorted video.

      @@lorirocks777 One shot with straight line verticals and horizontals, on a full-size camera. GoPro cameras can, I believe, be adjusted to avoid curved distortion (called 'barrelling') but too frequently are not. I find unadjusted barrelling so unpleasant that after a few moments I stop watching.
      As far as I can recall, the videos you present are near-enough free of barrelling, which is one reason why I keep watching. (The main reason is that the subject matter is so bloody good!) Today's video, shot by Andreas, was a fine example of what I'm talking about.
      As a former photographer and videographer of railways I found that a lens focal length of less than 28mm was prone to barrelling. 16mm, "fish-eye", focal length is an extreme example of the distortion, and is useful only for "effects" stills, and dashcams.
      That said, I can certainly appreciate that it's not always possible to set up a larger camera in a cab. A longer answer than I meant, but there it is.
      Just keep posting, and I'll keep watching. Cheers from a wintry Australia, in lockdown here in Victoria.

    • @lorirocks777
      @lorirocks777  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for clarifying that. I usually refer to that as a fish eye effect.
      Yes, I am saving up for a larger camera for low light situations.
      Thanks for watching and commenting :)

    • @lorirocks777
      @lorirocks777  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      By the way, I also dislike barelling in videos. Even this setting on the GoPro (called linear) isn't perfect. But it's the easiest way to equip drivers to make some recordings.

    17:33 Holy smokes, was that a New York City subway train out of the 1970s with all that graffiti pulling into the station?
    20:20 The results of a grade crossing elimination project. Plenty of those over the decades here in the United States.
    That race into Sombeval at the end was reminiscent of what once took place on a daily basis between the arch-rival New York Central and Pennsylvania railroads coming OUT of Chicago, Illinois. Each line's premier all-Pullman trains--the "20th Century Limited" and the "Broadway Limited", respectively--departed eastbound from the Windy City at the same time operating on the same schedule--with New York City as the ultimate destination. For the first, I believe it was, six miles out of Chicago the two lines' rights-of-way paralleled each other. Company pride had each locomotive crew putting on the speed in an all-out effort to best the long-time rival. In this modern-day example, I can't believe the driver of the other train let a girl beat him. Just kidding, Original Andrea, just kidding!
    Thank you both, Andrea Lisa and lorirocks, for providing us with this pleasant, pastoral passage through this part of beautiful Switzerland.

    • @lorirocks777
      @lorirocks777  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Interesting hearing that story of the two trains in Chicago.
      I used to think they were racing too before I was a train driver myself. I think a seasoned driver is beyond that, and the speed difference is often a difference in the way 2 drivers drive.
      In our case, according to the signalling, we only needed to brake to 60 km/h before the first set of points. Some drivers don't take advantage of that exception and brake to 60 before the entry signal.

    • @michaela.chmieloski3196
      @michaela.chmieloski3196 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lorirocks777 Definitely different times today as a locomotive engineer/driver than say 75, a hundred-years ago. Company rivalries have disappeared; safety through obedience of the rules is now the name of the game.
      In addition to the differences between how two drivers handle their charges, other factors figuring in to who "wins" might be track condition, how each train is routed into the depot, the decision to slow or even hold a consist so two trains don't reach the platforms at the same time, et cetera. Also, would not be surprised to learn that the two trains' meet in you presentation was pure happenstance rather than something that was worked into the timetables.
