Minimum wage employers don't value it even if you just want to work to afford your bills its best where I'm from to take it off your resume. Just sad and sick.
I think that would just encourage more. No easy answers. But living in California is bizarrely expensive. I think people need to focus on community college and vocational training more than some of these fancy degrees. But again, no easy answers.
That is a great point she made at the end- they are their living I their RVs because they really want to be able to keep going to college and it’s the only they can afford to do this. That’s how much their education means to them even though the costs are exorbitant and they made still struggle financially afterwards. Colleges don’t have to be so expensive and room and board on top of that does not need to that expensive either.

This is not homelessness. It seems the issue is more about where these students can park and for how long. These students live in RV's, and there is nothing wrong with that. This lifestyle is a choice. I personally choose to live this way to be liberated from the stress of paying rent or a mortgage, along with increasingly high bills. It's a simpler lifestyle, but it is not for everyone. I am a minimalistic person who prioritizes my happiness. I've lived in all kinds of properties during my lifetime, even luxury properties, and I found myself so unhappy because it made me feel stuck or trapped. I enjoy feeling free from that and the toxic environment it can be to live in a typical neighborhood.
@vanyac6448 Yeah, they do. Nobody is forcing these people to live the RV life. That's a choice. And not finding an area to a park is one of the negatives of van/rv life lol. They're legally homeless, but not actually homeless, and it's their decision to go to that university AND live in a van/rv. They can easily get more financial aid, live in the dorms, or go to another university, and they can especially sell their rv/van and live like a normal college student. No sympathy.
In fact, there are colleges that house 100% of their students. Often these are in remote areas or rural locations where off-campus housing was impractical or otherwise not available. Even after towns popped up around these places, they just kept the practice. These are typically private colleges.

RV life is not homeless, it's better than renting a room. The THING, they do need to fix is parking space. And that likely should be free for students/employees.
I believe that California colleges should provide an area where students who attend there college can park. Just like colleges have dorms, why can't colleges provide a parking spot that's well lit with a bathroom building with showers included for the students. These students pay expensive tuition to attend the college so why can't this be done. Times are changing, students can't afford expensive form fees or expensive student apartments. Why can't colleges go with the changes and help these students who are living in there cars?
yeah i don't see why they don't let that. They could keep only college students that have this situation regulated by making it mandatory for minimum units. This is the same way FASFA awards students how much is based on if they're part time or full time, thus the rule isn't used inappropriately. I would recommend only csu or uc's as community college would be harder to do.
Some places have tried, but there is a safety and liability issue. But if you say, “Times are changing,” do you mean that we must accept the way things have become and concede that our only option is to let our students live in cars, and provide plumbing? That would be the easy thing to do, but I don’t think it’s the right thing to do.
This is one of the reasons why I never continued my education after high school. Being able to go to college is so stupidly expensive there's no way I'd ever be able to pay for it, even 'with' a job. And I'm not a huge fan of being in debt for the rest of my life after graduating college :/
The root cause of these homelessness issue is very simple. Not enough housing. Why do we not have enough? Because people make it difficult to build. They will protest, delay, pass all kinds of laws to prevent new housing development. There is plenty of storage facilities, those have no issue getting built, but if you want to build an apartment complex of the same size in the same area, the neighbors will do everything to block it. We have plenty of vacant commercial space, lots of big box stores and malls shutdown, plenty of parking lots and parking structures mostly empty for years and years. Why can't we build there. Because of zoning laws and minimum parking requirements.
It’s a life choice that people make. I made a choice of not finishing college because of the cost, but I am doing well financially because of the choices I made. Most students can attend colleges closer to their home where they were raised to lessen the cost.
It's easy for you to say because you've never been in that position. This country is missing empathy so much that it's gross. How about they are human beings first instead of being condescending when you don't know what happened that got them there. Your situation is yours. Life isn't a 1 size fits all
Agreed. First 2 years go to a cheap school, even a community college and then the last 2 years if you did well go a bigger school. Many college degrees won't get you a good job, unless it's something like a doctor or lawyer. Have to question if college is even worth the 40 years you'll be paying student debt. Is that special job from going to college going to be worth it in the long run. Maybe better to learn a trade. Just thoughts to condiser.
There are always options but in some cases, if your serious there may only be a few colleges that will offer the degree you need. Sometimes You have to be willing to leave home in order to succeed
@@DiFinnito be a lawyer you have to get a bachelor's degree first, then go to law school. Same with Medical doctors and advanced Nursing degrees. But yeah, the first two years can be at a community College, shop around for cheaper options

Living in an RV is not homeless!! Why do this story?? it’s not like they’re living in tents or sleeping on side of the road. My friend Mom lived in an RV for about four years so that means she was homeless too?
It's messed up that the college is willing to accept the students'payment for tuition, but not allow them to park on campus. Every student is required to have their vehicle registered with the college in order to receive a parking permit; therefore, the college would be able to easily identify if a camper/van/bus parked on campus belonged to a student or just some other random homeless person, if they really felt the need to police the situation; they could easily shoo off those who weren't actually attending classes at that college, or any other college for that matter, in order to keep the overnight parking to a minimum. It seems to me that the real issue for the college (s), is that, aside from being a "business" like any other, whose sole purpose is to make money, not necessarily educate, is that they don't want to endure a bad reputation for being an institution that charges exorbitant costs so that students cannot afford to go to school and keep a standard living situation at the same time. They care more about what this says about them as an institution rather than the well-being of the students. And/or, they would rather the students pay even more money on "student housing", than have the students living in their vehicles. In fairness to the institution however, as a former college student and college employee, I can see where the college might be concerned about liability issues if they do not have overnight security patrolling the campus. I do know however what it's like to have become homeless while attending college and having to finish out a semester while living in my car, motels, and eventually the shelter-it's difficult. I can only say that the major issue we face as a culture as it relates to this topic, aside from the high cost of education, is the outrageous cost of living as it pertains to affordable housing for all.

So true. I told the very, very senior age members of my Lions Club, the largest Service Club in the world, about the college cost crisis, giving hard facts, and they had no clue how severe the costs are.
I totally agreed. We are in deep crisis.
"At the end of the day that sucks."
I hear you, brother.
This doesn’t sound tragedia. It’s like living in a trailer. They’re not living on the street
There's a huge difference between people choosing to live this way to save a few bucks and people living this way because they have no other option. These people are clearly choosing to live this way (#vanlife). I didn't hear one of them talk about any real struggles they experience or express fear about being made to drop out because the cost is more than they can bear. I'd prefer to hear from the students who have no other option.
I thought about being homeless for a while and realized I couldn't afford it. They literally ticket you for not having a home even when you are just in your vehicle smh. And getting your degree is a gamble because it won't guarantee you a job and can even disqualify you for one. Minimum wage employers don't value it even if you just want to work to afford your bills its best where I'm from to take it off your resume. Just sad and sick.
The university should provide a parking lot for them... there are plenty of parking lots all around campus!
I think that would just encourage more. No easy answers. But living in California is bizarrely expensive. I think people need to focus on community college and vocational training more than some of these fancy degrees. But again, no easy answers.
I went to UC Davis and we had students that lived in tents 😢
CBS News is really throwing shade at the CSU system with this.
It's a rip off big time!!!!
I'm glad we no longer have homeless people. now we have people who are experiencing homelessness.
Great catch on the small details

Or the newest term “the unhoused”
Silly semantics. Yup
I go through this in another state. I had to be with my family which triggers major health issues.
Yes, I feel like strong family foundation is so critical to quality life. Unstable people creating unstable families makes society unstable.
Housing in CA is outrageous
Wow - 😮 what tenacious college students!!! So sorry our society is not more encouraging of your admirable goals. Mind blowing 🤯 😳
At least those RVs are running, insured, and the driver has valid license.
Cal poly Humboldt recently kicked kids living in motor homes off their campus parking lots.
This is incredibly sad. Even the less expensive areas of California are so expensive now. And don't think this is just a California problem....it's coming to a state near you! Even Oklahoma is expensive now.
I’m in Cali , I’m slightly homeless. I own a home but I can’t afford to live in it, so I rent it out. I live in an illegal garage by pure grace . I almost had nothing when I lost my vehicle in a car accident. Cali is rough and the drug addiction is getting worse around me 😢
Many colleges offer a free on campus gym membership to students. Students can use the gym locker room to shower if available.
What does that have to do with being homeless and parking an RV?
@@Novastar.SaberCombat They get a place to shower, brush their teeth, etc. Most of the college students don’t have a place to shower so some will use the school gym locker room as free for students at times.
When I was in college, a guy I knew lived in his Supra and showered in the gym. And that was 20 years ago.
Living in an unsafe place at night and the choice is creative? I know it's hard without self-justification, but you have to face it.
Poor kids
Everyone is being affected regardless of age. I'm 36, never married, homeless since the pandemic, and living in an old Toyota Sienna minivan now, despite working, and not addicted to drugs. Society is broken.
They're funded by parents money.
@@alexlopez5800 I bought my own van... Also, seniors are going homeless too.

I used the pantry while in medical school at Anshultz Medical Campus….denver is extremely expensive. Hated it. I transferred school and basically started over in a smaller and more family
Friendly area and life is awesome
Now. Not everything is big city. Have the courage to stop and start and find greener pastures. No need to be homeless in that stage of life. Or at all, period.
Do you know where the school featured in this video is?
"Not everything is big city."
Not every small town is welcoming of all types of people or has infrastructure to accommodate a variety of lifestyles.
Unfortunately MOST living in RVs are NOT students and have ruined it for everyone living on wheels. I rented a room from a family with no kitchen privileges when I went to college 44 years ago, worked part time school full time.

@@Blue_Star_flyer Good for you... Not everyone is cutout for the medical field. Also I come from a really broken family full of poverty and problems. My single mother lost our home right as I was graduating high school, then my first two jobs went bankrupt while still owing me unpaid wages, then my mother died of cancer, and I had to go back to live in my long lost transgendered father's kitchen, without any personal space or privacy... I could go on and on, including losing my housing twice during the pandemic. It's just impossible to make progress in life with the rug constantly being pulled out from under you.
That’s great. What was your tuition and rent, if you don’t mind my asking?

I rented a room from a family with no kitchen privileges when I went to college 44 years ago. Worked part time, school full time.
@vanyac6448 They have a choice, lol. These types of people are dealing with the negatives of RV/Van life. It's entirely their fault.
America is broken. This is heartbreaking
Colleges should only be allowed to enroll the numbers of students they’re able to house. Why is this any different?!
In fact, there are colleges that house 100% of their students. Often these are in remote areas or rural locations where off-campus housing was impractical or otherwise not available. Even after towns popped up around these places, they just kept the practice. These are typically private colleges.
So the student who lives at home can't go to college?
@@youtubesucks1499After proving that they live within a certain radius and have the means to travel to class, sure. You obviously don’t live near a college so haven’t seen this mess they’ve created due to lack of housing. This video doesn’t even address the mass amounts of low-paid workers colleges need to function and where they’re suppose to live.
@@Jackwagon You assume I don't. I do. I know what supply and demand is.

Rents too damn high. Even working a full time job often doesn’t qualify you for a studio apartment..
That turned education into a commodity what did you expect
The state is unliveable and these students with mobile housing are the lucky ones. I left CA in 2015 and hate going back to visit.
It’s just a big shame that society, community, nor government won’t support future generations of good smart motivated kids like here in this clip.
Good smart motivated kids? They need to help themselves.
Then they say “everyone in America should be able to make it on their own merit” and “if you are poor it’s your fault” smh this is systemic
This point no one will be able to afford homes anymore, especially in California:/
Why can't the government--local or national--do something about landlords and apartment complexes raising rent??? And why is it only storage unit buildings being built and not affordable housing for lower income people? My city has tons of empty buildings just sitting around that makes me just so mad.
If you choose to put off working for a living to be an adult student, your choice of off campus housing is not news worthy.
The Golden state is now Bronze! A very sad state of affairs.
I just became homeless after leaving my abusive household and I have nowhere to go. College was potentially a safe place to get away from everything but now idk it’s scary and Im afraid of what might happen
Brad looks so sad.
You could hear the hopelessness in his voice.
I like her little school bus and the RV too.
Just another reason to leave California.
How so? They really want to be there.
@@soulscanner66 Because it’s too hard and expensive to survive and you see they are struggling just to have a place to live. I want a million dollars but I know it’s not going to just show up if I hang around and wait.
It’s not California. Other colleges in other states have students who face the same issue.
If you ain't rich, you ain't nothin'. (tm)
Bye
Wow! Crazy statistics. This is so sad. They should have the true college experience.
The camper is being than the $10-12 thousand of dollar dorm every semester
This is one of the reasons why I never continued my education after high school. Being able to go to college is so stupidly expensive there's no way I'd ever be able to pay for it, even 'with' a job. And I'm not a huge fan of being in debt for the rest of my life after graduating college :/
If you have a place to stay your not homeless
There should a designated place for RV and trailers to park. Cal poly is a very expensive school. I’m surprised there isn’t ample parking.
Parking a car or an RV?
Universities are just heartless. With all tuitions being paid, students are not allowed to stay on premise. This is just sad.
The cop said they have to move in 3 days, that's fine .. move the camper 50 or 100ft then it's now in a different spot.
Make housing affordable, it’s not fair those students
Wow this is really sad. CA taxes and GDP are among the highest in the US. Where is that money going?
I agree, every city in every state has empty buildings and lots.
College tuition is out off control. If they are going to charge that much, housing should be included.
Why can’t they just live on campus or have the university help them finebhouaing
There is no point in living in a state that will steal a large percentage of your living wage that could go towards a vehicle, home, and tour retirement funds.
Living in an RV is not homeless!! Why do this story?? it’s not like they’re living in tents or sleeping on side of the road. My friend Mom lived in an RV for about four years so that means she was homeless too?
It’s either you’re homeless or you go to AA and meet the men you ‘reminded someone of’ so that’s your life
They should not have to deal with that when having to focus on studies!
I'd be worried about the woman on the bus late night😢
Should have put the spotlight on actual homeless students, ya know, ones without actual shelter, not people that choose to live this way.
Nothing wrong to live in an RV especially when you are a student !
No way would I pay for school over shelter
Skid Row be damned, I guess homelessness not serious in CA until it affects “pretty”white kids?

Ok, I believe that if you’re homeless, educated, and in good condition, then you should just join the military. Your education will give you rank and it’s probably one of the few places where you can work on your debt, get paid, get loan forgiveness, and continue your education for free.
There are people who choose the Military but not everyone wants to do that or wants to risk life and limb being a soldier
@@terryowen6759 Yes, not everyone wants to “risk life and limb”, but the media really has twisted the minds of most people because the majority of military personnel do not see combat, just work a regular 8 hour job, and many are also not soldiers. Of course, this doesn’t apply if someone chooses to go into a combat related job. Aside from that, having a job with benefits beats being homeless.
misleading. They are Technically in housed but practically they are not homeless. Possible solutions for these students are very different from students who have to fight for shelter beds, find a couch or park bench to crash on. A reasonable solution would be to create a designated area for students in RV or campers and celebrate their resourcefulness.
PEOPLE WHO SAY "YOU CHOSE THIS LIFESTYLE" ARE IGNORANT OF STUDENT ISSUES. IT SEEMS INGNIRANCE IS BLISS TO THOSE WHO HAVE A PROPER ROOF OVER THEIR HEADS.
How am I ignorant when they're experiencing the negatives of RV/van life and decided to go with that lifestyle? It's their fault. There's housing for these people. And there's plenty of financial aid out there too, so don't act like they can't live like a normal college student.
i feel like universities and colleges should be obligated to provide free housing during the whole duration of every student’s attendance. these students are the future of the nation after all. i mean at least it should be the government’s obligation
Are you willing to pay more in taxes?
No where in the Constitution is the government (or taxpayers) obligated. I don't want to pay for housing for some guys to have a place to sleep after a night of binging.
Wait, living in your own RV does not = homeless. These students are wisely not racking up their debt. But the college s SHOULD provide RV sites.
You have more than people on the streets.
1/10 is a completely low number and gaslighting from the media again it’s more like 5/10 that are homeless…
I can’t rule that out for Humboldt. There’a no doubt that rates are underreported in general, but the data doesn’t support that elsewhere.
That’s the California way!
It's because every year student housing goes to the freshman....so the rest of the students have to find alternative methods for housing....depending on what school you go to....do your homework before going to their school
I'll be damned if would live in a car working a job . Rather quit and be a real bum . At least no work stress
Simple solutions. 1. Don't go to college, 2. Don't live in California. Suddenly, it's miraculously easy to not be homeless.
living in a RV is better than a dorm
Don’t pick majors that don’t make six figures. If your dream career doesn’t make you money don’t choose it. It’s better to be employed than homeless
Don’t conflate college education with job training. And degrees are not careers.
