I’ve been enjoying the new Ultimate Spider-Man. Very nice art. The concept of super powers as allegory for the midlife crisis instead of puberty also has a lot of potential.
Janet VanDyne's backstory had always been that she's a successful fashion designer. I've enjoyed that through the years as the in-story and behind-the-scenes reason for giving her so many different costumes, whereas most superheroes look the same for decades. I'm not reading any current comics, uh... currently, though am in the middle of Barry Windsor-Smith's 'Monsters'. I was utterly horrified within the first few pages. It's wonderful. Interesting episode! Thank ya!

The reboot of Conan by Titan has been quite good. Similar but it's own thing, Bloodrik was an enjoyable, well drawn, 3 issue mini. Rare Flavours has been great, The Deviant, Sacrificers, and Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees, have all been solid reads as well, and I Hate Fairyland continues to be a fun irreverent trip.
I had a similar concern about Tynion overstretching when I started Workdtr33. I loved it, but having just finished the Vol 7 TPB of Something’s Killing, I think that may be the one that’s suffered a bit. It just seemed very predictable. I’ll definitely pick up the next Worldtr33 TPB, but not sure about the next volume of Something’s Killing.
I've picked up multiple Tynion series, but I dropped off SIKTC early in the run and will not be continuing with NHBTL, not just because of the lengthy & annoying acronyms, but because I don't have the $$$ to follow every one of his whimsies.
Majority of comics I enjoy are rarely superhero stuff. Great horror and crime comics exist. Erotica exists. Biography. Ahoy Comics seems to want to do lots of comedy stuff. LOTS of stuff
Beneath the Trees is the best book coming out right now, IMO. Pitch perfect execution. It may have the most mainstream crossover potential for any book out there. It's a very special series.
Thank you. I thought it best to explain my perspective so it wasn't taken out of context. Or, for that matter, taken as a dog whistle, if you get my meaning. I'm not sure who suggested I keep the glitchy dialogue. But they get the credit for it staying in. :)
The thing I've been reading that I think you'd like the most is Blue Book 1947. It's a miniseries by Tynion and Micheal Avon Oeming about Kenneth Arnold's UFO sightings in 1941. This is the second volume they've done and both are non-fiction stories detailing paranormal events that Tynion finds interesting. Also Tynion is working on a Horror book with Christian Ward called Spectregraph that I'm looking forward to because I just read Batman City of Madness and Ward's art on that is incredible (not so much his writing)
I do not read any of the ongoing titles from Marvel or DC Comics. However, I did start reading 'Crave' by María Llovet, which is a six-issue series published by Image Comics. I have enjoyed her previous works. Apart from that, anything written by Ed Brubaker would be great as he has been consistent lately.
I'm never current as I read collected editions and have limited free time with young kiddos. That said, I'm keen to check out The Sickness, Jay Stephens' Dwellings, Matt Lesniewski's Faceless and the Family, and Sombra. Would love to hear your thoughts on any of those!
About avengers INC. There's currently overarching continuity thing about Wilson Fisk outlawing costumed heroes in New York when he was mayor, and now mayor Luke Cage has to deal with it while still helping out his friends.
I've been enjoying the new shared universe introduced in Void Rivals, it's been interesting to see how it plays out this time around. If you ever venture into the Transformers stuff, I hope you find it enjoyable.
Just found your channel and really enjoyed the current comics for February 2024. Its refreshing to find someone objective with intelligent insight and unbiased opinions. Looking at comics and reviewing them as the art form they are, without the fanboy bloviating. Thank you.
I think Skybound’s Hasbro books have all been solid even with Void Rivals’s very slow burn pacing. Transformers is very fun especially with Daniel Warren Johnson’s art. I enjoy both the GI Joe books but I think Cobra Commander might be the more interesting one due to delving into the weirder more controversial parts of GI Joe lore.
Hunter Rose was my favorite Grendel, nice to see Matt getting him back out there. Is it possible that Hunter punished pedophiles out of self-loathing because of his feelings for Christine ? I always found that relationship disturbing.
Great video! I'm going to check out Newburn for sure now. I'd love to hear your thoughts on Seven Years In Darkness. It was my runaway favorite of the past year.
Great video thank you. I am 99% a collected editions buyer but I have actually read 3 of these (USM, WW and Worldtree) and agree with pretty much everything you said. Am going to try The Madness as a result and as I tend enjoy JMS’ work generally and didn’t know about this. Like you I am always concerned some of these series don’t get properly concluded
I enjoyed your quick review on Void Rivals, too cool. I wish you would do a collaboration with JerkComic you're both my favorite content creators on TH-cam.
I've been a DC kid for 50+yrs. and haven't bought a DC/Marvel books in years i haven't cared for Spidey's direction in decades. i heard good things and picked up the first 2 books and will actually continue to pick up this series.
That technique of writing of holding information for the mystery to be solved is why I haven't been able to connect with some of the more famous mystery fiction. I feel like most of them do that to enhance impact or to make the protagonist seem cooler. Funnily enough, more children oriented mystery themes fiction avoid these contraptions, which is probably why series like Scooby Doo end up being timeless.
Currently reading the new Ultimate Spider-Man. Read the first issue and it looks very promising. I'll check out the new Transformers/GI Joe universe someday. And I'll read Hellblazer: Dead in America when it's finished. Tom King is not my cup of tea, but good for him for writing Wonder Woman. And don't forget James Tynion is writing Nightmare Country, one of the current Sandman spinoffs, also unfinished as far as I'm concerned. Enjoyed a miniseries called Bloodrik by Andrew Krahnke. And these are my current comics I'm reading.
GI Joe: A real American Hero is and remains a good comic. The 80s Marvel Shield comic that never stopped, minus those 15 years. The main Transformers comic is also quit good. The very first time I actually care about reading a Transformer ongoing. Kirkman´s Firepower just ended. I liked that one. JoJo Part 9: The JojoLands (only in scanlation) is good and has a US setting but it´s best to start part 7, a reboot, if you want to get on that train.
Lion and the Eagle, another war tale from Garth Ennis. Initially, you may think this is Ennis's brand of violence and WWII, but let me assure you that he will exceed that expectation with this story.
Garth Ennis is an amazing war comic storyteller. And it annoys me to no end how the Boys (which let's face it is absolute trash) became more of a hit instead of his war material, because that's where his heart is, and it's his best stuff. But American Cape Addicts can't let go of their capes in favor of anything else.
Great work as always! I love your use of the TH-cam icon as the censorship cover. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Chuck Dixon Airboy comics. We seem to have many similar tastes and I enjoy the series but I"d love to hear your thoughtful remarks on the work.
Thank you. Yet another insightful and enjoyable video. On the topic of comics being optioned for Netflix, is there any word of the works of Ed Brubaker, such as Fatale, Criminal, etc being on a short list?
I've never seen a copy of the new Wonder Woman series, just images on the web. Sampere's art is lovely, but he always seems to draw WW with a head that's about 10-15% smaller than it should be. I hope that's an area where he's improved. I'm a little surprised that the new Devil by the Deed is "life story" of Hunter. Not quite what I expected. Interesting.

That comment was shallow, and beneath you. What is it about Peter that makes you feel he doesn't deserve an attractive partner? Do you feel that MJ is defined solely by her looks, with no identifiable personality characteristics? I won't go so far as ti say I was "offended " by this comment, but I was definitely taken aback. Also, if you are an AI program, who was the white haired man in the photo in one of your previous videos? Was this an actual human, or an AI generated image?
That was a joke about Peter, feeling directionless and dissipated, feeling he didn't deserve such a great partner. Maybe the tone of voice was inscrutable since it's, well, an AI? ;)
