You could argue this was the game that produced Clemson's great historical run too since this thrashing led to Tommy Bowden being fired in the middle of the season, where he was replaced by Dabo Swinney.
as a clemson fan,.. i gotta disagree.. while this game was definitely eye opening.. had bowden been able to produce enough to beat the likes of an 8-5 maryland team and an 8-5 wake forest team, this game would have been forgiven.. and, the bowden years woulda continued.. but, he had lost the respect of his players.. and fans.. bowden was a good guy, but not a championship caliber football coach.. he was held in high regards for owning south carolina.. even though they were terrible.. what's odd is that when dabo came along, south carolina entered their greatest era of football EVER.. and, dabo lost 5 in a row to them.. yet was kept on cause everyone could see the writing on the wall.. the best was yet to come.. and, still is.
Do not forget history. This is Alabama's third dynasty. Just because that was a decade or so with some losing seasons does not mean that the Tide has not been rolling for a long long time. When I attended we often did not go to the games because they were such bad victories as to be boring in the heat. The house I lived in now part of the stadium enabled me to sit on the porch swing and every time a cheer was heard, I knew we had scored again.
Tide all the way since my dad told me his dad an he listened to Bama winning it all on the radio in 1934 - with a defensive end named Bryant. Lesson here: just because someone says ONE THING that deserves to be said doesn't mean they're trash talking because you don't like it. Bama's kicking, putting it generously, has sucked since Saban got there and it cost them one national championship (and an immortal three-peat [which they were cheated out of in 1967 with Stabler, my fav all time, as QB) vs Barn in the damnable so-called Kick-Six game. It should've, indeed, been called Kick-Something but not for the 56-yarder that poor freshman Griffith was called on to make, but due to bozo #43 Cade Foster (who looked like he spent more time on his arms than on his kicking under pressure) missing THREE FGs (43, 32, 33) that game, Bama never had the 10-pt cushion they should've had going down the stretch. Had he made one of those 30-f'n yarders, that bullshit Barn gimmick play with 35 seconds left would've been window dressing on Bama's way to a three-peat against FSU that year - who all but lost to Barn up to the last play - Barn being a legit 10-pt underdog to Bama (as posted by Vegas before the 2013 iron Bowl, btw), Bama would've punished Winston and FSU that year. Not to EVER be because Saban will not hand out a fucking scholarship to a mere FG kicker. Meanwhile, Barn goes all the way to Colorado to get what's his name (Daniel Carson, NFL now) and I think he missed like three times in three or four years. Then, you have a Greek walk-on that not even Hotty Toddy wanted and he does all he can do to ruin things in both Clemson blow-out (where, mercifully, 3 didn't matter in the end) and close one with UGA.
It’s been a great era to be a Bama fan! I’ve been a Bama fan my whole life. Cheering them on in 91 when they beat Miami in the Sugar Bowl for the NC. Then through the dark times of the 3 Mikes. Then Nick Saban came to T town and Alabama has been the best
Thank you! Im from clemson born and raised. watched this game and left the game saying alabama is a dynasty. I have never seen such a good team. and that was game 1
Happened my sophomore year in college at Clemson and was part of what led to the start of the Dabo era by the end of the season. That was a good old fashioned beating Alabama gave us in this game.
I remember this game like it was yesterday...hell of a way to start my freshman year..after that game I didnt think wed have such a good season but I saw what was too come.
I always feel like it’s my clemson Tigers vs bama. Guess this is how it all started. I hate the tide but gotta respect them. Hopefully this year it’s bama clemson again
Marquis Johnson (#24) ended up being pretty good once Saban came in, after a subpar start to his college career... and expanding beyond just the secondary, a LOT of players actually had huge turnarounds once Saban arrived, like Glen Coffee, JP Wilson (his senior year- the year of this game), and several more guys, especially on defense.
take away Kick Six nightmare game, Griffith is the best they've had since Tiffin. And that bloop kick-throw onside gem vs Clemson was Griffith's. That was all-time great moment in Bama kicking going back a century.
Cpowell: Not really the Reichardt kid looks pretty damn good to me this year. Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Tiffin have 3 missed field goals against Arkansas that year or the year before. And as a result game lost the game. Sounds familiar to what's been going on the last 5 or 6 years to me.
I would say it was this game here. They went 12-0 regular season that year. Just a few weeks after this game they beat down uga in the infamous blackout.
It was definitely this game. Clemson was being touted as a National Championship contender and Bama was a heavy underdog. This was the first year their new strength training program went into full effect along with a great incoming freshman class. It was a night and day difference from the previous year.
aw man. i swear i thought they were gonna tell me about the game in 2005 when tyrone prothro's ankle spun in the end zone. THAT was when i became a tide fan. huge prothro fan, hope he's doing well, hope he shall always be well. you, sir, are the reason i'm a bama fan. not saban. much respect to you. and roll tide forever.
His leg is messed up for life man. He could hardly walk for two years. I think he had 12 surgeries. That was a terrible injury. It wasn't his ankle. It actually snapped his bone in half. His freaking shin bone broke in half and came thru the skin. It had turf and dirt stuck in his bone marrow! Dudes selling cars in Gadsden Al now.
That beat down actually opened the door for the Clemson rise. That was a step towards their head coach getting fired and replaced by an assistant named Dabo Sweeney.
"Julio Jones..his first of many I would say" oh the foreshadowing. I'm a UGA fan but man the names on this team and pretty much every bama team since Saban took over is incredible. Even seeing them ranked #24 at this time doesn't feel right. What a dynasty.
Bro, as a freshmen in college (19) I can’t imagine the pressure the freshmen have, I could maybe play well with this crowd since I’m sorta used to doing stuff in front of a crowd but still it’s nuts seeing how many people these kids play in front of
I remember this game like it was yesterday. As a lifelong Tide fan it had been a rough few years, hell decade honest, but after watching this game I knew with Saban things were gonna turn around. Then I posted about it MySpace. 🤣
When I saw Mark Ingram run that first kick off, I knew he was going to win the Heisman. I kid you not. He ran the ball like had been in college for at least 3 years.
I think this is when Saban was able to truly get his players to all buy into “the process”. After they saw what they could accomplish against a top 10 team opening week, the sky became the limit. Source: 6 National Championships in 12 years, and 8-3 in the playoffs.
I’ve heard rumors that lot of those seniors from the previous year were problems in terms of buying in. That team took a monster LSU deep into the fourth quarter and then totally collapsed for the remainder of November. (Losses to Mississippi State, ULM and Auburn...) This was the first game without that bunch. Add a few elite freshman from Saban’s first full recruiting class, and this was the result.
B.I.G. Deem not in the 90s. Bama fell off the map after that 92 championship. In the decade before they hired Saban Bama had 4 losing seasons and only 1 bowl win. Bama was a shithole before Saban started this run.
Bama haters favorite excuse is "Bama was nothing until Saban came there". You seem to forget about Bear Bryant. What if Saban is the reason?..so what? Alabama is winning games and national championships What is your team doing??
kenp689 Bama has been a top tier team for a long long long time and they will continue to be and this is coming from a Clemson fan. Nothing but respect for Bama
teller12 u also have all of the talent that they have sent to the nfl. Not only have they had great coaches but they have put top tier players into the NFL year in and year out but even though I am praising Bama I will also give my team Clemson props on the talent we have been able to recruit year in and out for the past 6-7 years and it has been a phenomenal ride and we are now a force to be reckoned with in NCAA football. We are now considered one of the elite programs in college football and I hope this year is as good as the last 3 and we can have another barn burner with Alabama because I think Clemson is on the Alabama level and not many teams can say such a thing but I won't count my chickens before they hatch like some of my fellow Clemson fans because I'm not a trash talker but hopefully we can see eye to eye on this subject also and u guys can give credit where credit is due and even if Clemson doesn't make it to the playoff for the next ten years which I don't think will be the case personally I have enjoyed watching my team prosper these last few years and it has been a wonderful ride And btw I'm sry this was such a long comment just wanted to put this out there
Jordan Black Clemson beat BAMA in 2016 for the national championship Clemson is a very good team and I don't believe they will fall off the ladder anytime soon. Going to 2 straight national championship games they proved that they are a team to look out for, so keep showing that Tiger Pride
kenp689 we still beat you guys the year before in the championship game. Plus uh....... 24-6*. Everyone said you guys were going to make a 3rd straight appearance to the title game. But who was standing in your way? Damn right. The Tide.
Ironically this game was the start of two dynasties, Bama and Clemson. This game got Tommy Bowden fired which lead to Dabo taking over. I know Clemson (and everyone else) don't have the hardware to match Saban's Dynansty but this was the beginning a greatness for Bama and the turning point towards greatness for Clemson. They last 6 or so years Clemson has been second only to Bama in wins and that's thanks to Bowden getting crushed by Saban in Atlanta.
Clemson??? Wtf are you smoking? Clemson's only won one championship since this game.A lot of people have a REALLY odd definition of 'dynasty' these days. Hell, GS isn't even a dynasty. The team that's won the last two titles is significantly different than the team that went to two finals in '15 & '16 because of Durant. But, they'll be there next season after another easy win. And no, the Spurs weren't a dynasty and neither were the Giants. Consistency in winning every other year for a bit is not a dynasty. Gotta repeat some time.
It hasn't been every other year or "a bit". I acknowledged the lack of multiple NCG's but only Bama has out performed Clemson for the last 6 or so years. tOSU is probably the only other school that is close.
What a night. We had gone through the lean 80's, all the stars lined up in 92 and we won one but couldn't sustain. 2 probations, Dubose, Perkins, Curry. It was a rough 30 years. This game, Bama may have been 24th or 25th ranked. Clemson was supposed to roll. We heard all summer how Clemson was gonna ream us on their way to a possible title. We were coming out of a horrific schollie reduction period and 2008 was the first year we would have 85 schollie players since 02. It's a cliche but in the dome that night there was a feel you couldnt describe. When the game kicked off you just knew Bama was about to do something special. Saban had started the year before and had an undisciplined, lazy group that he had to deal with but beat Colorado in the bowl and they weren't supposed to win that. He weeded out some bad apples, got the team doing things his was asking them to do, had brought in some freshmen that we hadn't been getting. We couldn't get one single great player to come to Bama but he had reeled in Julio and Ingram. This night , the discipline, the heart, the cohesiveness, the want to, the TALENT that we hadn't seen in years was evident. THe sanctions were over, the negative culture was gone, players showing up late for practice, bringing food to team meetings, falling asleep in film...all that was gone. We were Bama again and we....and the nation knew it.
Who are these Ingram and Jones kids? They played so well in this game one might think they have a chance to be on an NFL roster someday. I’m going to keep my eye out for them.
Man, on one hand, this game seems like a lifetime ago- yet, on the other, it seems like it was just yesterday... Interesting that this was the very first opening weekend game in Atlanta, for the College Kickoff Game, or whatever they call it.
I always said it was it was the game against Colorado in 2007 that jumpstarted this run - even tho that 2007 team lost had a terrible lost to Louisiana Monroe, I have much respect for that team - they took the bumps and bruises - all 6 losses were by one possession - and honestly Bama could have beat Georgia, LSU, Mississippi State, and Louisiana Monroe easily if not for mistakes - in Iron Bowl and the Florida State game Bama was horrible on offense and both of those games came down to a onside kick at the end - people give all the credit to the 2008 and the 2009 teams but the 2007 team put in the hard work and never gave up - 🐘🏆 ROLL TIDE
No matter how good or bad Bama does in a season, they're the measuring stick for every other team in the SEC. Remember when Old Piss tore down the goalpost after winning? A non-fan would have thought they won the Championship. Hail Saban and Roll Tide!
This was a nice win that got the ball rolling in that 08 season, but imo the game that really started the dynasty was the “Blackout Game” later that year when they came into Athens and blew out that UGA team that had Stafford, Knowshon, AJ Green, Massaquoi, Geno Atkins, Justin Houston, Reshad Jones, Brandon Boykin, Cordy Glenn, Clint Boling, Blair Walsh, Drew Butler, basically 2 minor league NFL teams full of pro bowlers. Watershed moment for both programs. Started the slow downfall of Richt at UGA and Bama announced to the country that they were here and here to stay
How strange is it to see Alabama ranked #24. The previous year I was at the ULM game where we lost 21-14. I remember driving home wondering why we were paying Saban so much. Boy am I singing a different tune now. After vacating victories, Alabama was 2-6 that year. WOW!!

The house I lived in now part of the stadium enabled me to sit on the porch swing and every time a cheer was heard, I knew we had scored again.
he should have put "the saban dynasty" instead
Drogas
William Lucas only 4 losing seasons. 4!
Bama hasn't looked back since! ROLL TIDE!
and they haven't had a kicker since!
@@___meph___4547 yeh
“Favorites over alabama” is not a phrase often heard anymore.
Well we had kicker this year
Roll Tide Roll
National champs
Damn man saban got hired when I was in 5th grade I'm 22 now I've watch damn near every game since
I was in the 7th grade when Saban got hired(I'm 26 now) I definitely remember watching the 08 SEC championship game and every game since.
Julio’s first TD brought back the memories 🙌🏽 RTR
Happened my sophomore year in college at Clemson and was part of what led to the start of the Dabo era by the end of the season. That was a good old fashioned beating Alabama gave us in this game.
Wow this Alabama team seems really good. It’s nice to see the underdog win once in a while.
RTR I remember watching that game so much talent Mark Ingram. Won our 1st Heisman the following year
So Beautiful...was there...Clemson folks looked a little in shock walking around at halftime...RT
I remember this game like it was yesterday...hell of a way to start my freshman year..after that game I didnt think wed have such a good season but I saw what was too come.
Oh and my best friend was a Clemson fan..until halftime 😂😂
The freshman class at Alabama is legendary. Julio, Ingram, Hightower...
First and only time an opponent tried to single block Terrance Cody
I remember this game. Fun times for sure as u knew we were commin. 6 titles later..oh my.
Was at that game. Remember texting my OU friend - "Our days of going to the Independence Bowl are over."
Remember it like yesterday as a 16 year old kid. I knew as soon as I watched this Alabama was back.
Wow.. This was awesome to look back on.. Now that both programs have own the decade
Won't ever forget this game. I was in Iraq, stayed up til like 2/3 am to watch this game, and won some money!!
Hearing all these true freshman names are shocking me
That 2008 team will always be one of my favorites....the season ended bad but it was a sign of great things to come!
2008 was the beginning of the end for all teams not named alabama
This brings back good memories
It’s insane to see Brent and Herby talking about “keeping an eye on the talented Julio Jones”
I always feel like it’s my clemson Tigers vs bama. Guess this is how it all started. I hate the tide but gotta respect them. Hopefully this year it’s bama clemson again
I miss Javier Arenas. That dude was a punt & kickoff return BEAST, and ended up being a GREAT college DB.
Now I've got to do some research on that art deco Clemson font in the endzone. I don't remember that.
Ill never be able to enjoy and cheer for a team like alabama... Enjoy the years of dominance...
We shall enjoy our 2 win season
That was a hell of a recruiting class
That's also the game that started the Clemson dynasty. Bowden started his way out after this game and before seasons and it was Dabos team.
What’s funny is this was the last time we had a great kicker😝
take away Kick Six nightmare game, Griffith is the best they've had since Tiffin. And that bloop kick-throw onside gem vs Clemson was Griffith's. That was all-time great moment in Bama kicking going back a century.
Your team shouldn’t rely on a kicker if everyone else does their job. Justa saying.🐘🐘
The start of the Bama dynasty was when they defeated UF in the 2009 SEC championship and ran Urban out of the SEC
I kinda think its this game... put the tide back out on the national stage. this was Julio and Ingrams first game
I would say it was this game here. They went 12-0 regular season that year. Just a few weeks after this game they beat down uga in the infamous blackout.
Cade Cornell Nah....It was this game.
Now, the UF game in the 2009 SEC Championship game was the changing of the guard of the SEC.
It was definitely this game. Clemson was being touted as a National Championship contender and Bama was a heavy underdog. This was the first year their new strength training program went into full effect along with a great incoming freshman class. It was a night and day difference from the previous year.
The Dynasty began when Nick Saban said " Yes I'll be the Head coach of the University of Alabama".
aw man. i swear i thought they were gonna tell me about the game in 2005 when tyrone prothro's ankle spun in the end zone.
I was at this game! Way up in the thin air section albeit but what a great game it was
When they talk about the money and incentives he got as a coach as a Bama fan it’s money that was well worth it
Little did that Clemson team know they were a out to run head on into a buzz-saw.
That beat down actually opened the door for the Clemson rise. That was a step towards their head coach getting fired and replaced by an assistant named Dabo Sweeney.
Daniel Minton you took the words out of my mouth
We will see them again this year except this time the outcome will be different
Kenneth Burleson with Tua, no one is going to come within 21 points of Alabama... But good luck with that
Kevin O keep telling yourself that bud with Trevor Lawrence no one will come within 28 points of Clemson
"Julio Jones..his first of many I would say" oh the foreshadowing. I'm a UGA fan but man the names on this team and pretty much every bama team since Saban took over is incredible. Even seeing them ranked #24 at this time doesn't feel right. What a dynasty.
God this freshman class was amazing. Miss these days
How gratifying it was to beat them so thoroughly !!!!
That game started 2 dynasties. Sabans at Bama and Dabo at Clemson.
I definitely remember where I was when this got started
sportsguru0512 sportsguru0512 where would that be?
Bro, as a freshmen in college (19) I can’t imagine the pressure the freshmen have, I could maybe play well with this crowd since I’m sorta used to doing stuff in front of a crowd but still it’s nuts seeing how many people these kids play in front of
I remember this game like it was yesterday. As a lifelong Tide fan it had been a rough few years, hell decade honest, but after watching this game I knew with Saban things were gonna turn around. Then I posted about it MySpace. 🤣
I was 10 years old at this game...
Julio Jones as a true freshman! Damn I feel old
this game also open the door for Dabo
82ghall oooooooof
Saw #24 Alabama, had flashbacks to the Mike years, Hold me Nick.
Marquis Johnson. Always got beat
Keep up the good work Alabama Rolltide
Two dynasties that started and ended with the same team. Alabama/Clemson and in the 1950's Oklahoma/Notre Dame.
I loved this win
Glen Coffee. Damn who remembers him lol
parks i do #38
parks he scored a TD in the Blackout game. I remember #38
Went on to ditch the NFL to join the military and defend our country. Hero.
Jarred Snider DID NOT KNOW THAT!! really?? wow learn something new everyday glen coffee thank you for your service sir!
I do. Roll Tide Roll! Glen is a Ft. Walton
When I saw Mark Ingram run that first kick off, I knew he was going to win the Heisman. I kid you not. He ran the ball like had been in college for at least 3 years.
As an LSU fan I really liked watching Glen Coffee.
I remember that game.
Absolutely right. Athletics is a big part of any university and it’s not only football.
The end of Bowden at Clemson and what a class of freshmen at Bama!
This game started the Saban dynasty, Bear Bryant started the first Bama dynasty
Lil Island Wallace Wade and Frank Thomas had dynasties before the Bear.
The good ole days when we had a great kicker. And to be technical Bama had a dynasty in the 70's & 90s also 🤷🏿♂️
B.I.G. Deem not in the 90s. Bama fell off the map after that 92 championship. In the decade before they hired Saban Bama had 4 losing seasons and only 1 bowl win. Bama was a shithole before Saban started this run.
What was your dynasty in the 90s? Florida’s 6 sec titles ?
Joshua Chapman
Yes Bama was struggling before Saban came there
Now what has Bama done since Saban has been there?
Joshua Chapman they also had a dynasty in the 20s winning 3 NCs with Wade as head coach.
Tennessee going to the natty in 97 and 98, winning it in 98 and what about Florida? 96 national champion, bama who?
Bama haters favorite excuse is "Bama was nothing until Saban came there". You seem to forget about Bear Bryant. What if Saban is the reason?..so what?
Alabama is winning games and national championships
What is your team doing??
kenp689 Bama has been a top tier team for a long long long time and they will continue to be and this is coming from a Clemson fan. Nothing but respect for Bama
Bryant, Wallace Wade, Frank Thomas...not Saban. And don't forget ole Gene.
teller12 u also have all of the talent that they have sent to the nfl. We are now considered one of the elite programs in college football and I hope this year is as good as the last 3 and we can have another barn burner with Alabama because I think Clemson is on the Alabama level and not many teams can say such a thing but I won't count my chickens before they hatch like some of my fellow Clemson fans because I'm not a trash talker but hopefully we can see eye to eye on this subject also and u guys can give credit where credit is due and even if Clemson doesn't make it to the playoff for the next ten years which I don't think will be the case personally I have enjoyed watching my team prosper these last few years and it has been a wonderful ride
And btw I'm sry this was such a long comment just wanted to put this out there
Jordan Black
Clemson beat BAMA in 2016 for the national championship
Clemson is a very good team and I don't believe they will fall off the ladder anytime soon.
Damn right. The Tide.
This is very well titled, This is the start of the dynasty. Broadcast played AC/DC rockinrolltrain and it dont get better than that.
Was there. Beautiful..... ROLL TIDE!
I feel like this game sparked the rivalry between the two schools.
There were several years in this era where almost every game of the season was a complete dismantling of the opponent in this manner.
Did Tua play any in this game?
Me Goofy no he would have been like 8 years old
Jacob Lerg Lmfao
😂😂😂
band wagon at its finest
He was 8.
Any game where Clemson loses is a good game
Laser Games If Bama has outperformed Clemson since this game, then how tf did a dynasty start in Clemson then? Lmao
LMAO, Clemson has never had a dynasty. They’ve had only 2 NC in their entire history... both by Bama products I might add.
Still waiting on a Clemson dynasty to exist.....Unless you call every team that has ever one a single championship a dynasty..
"the bad boys of the SEC"
- Brent Musburger
More like the bad boys of college football. Alabama and Ohio State. They both have the most players in the NFL
The "Dynasty" started years before that play!
I'm from Texas but I love the Tide
The game that started the Nick Saban dynasty and the game that also sparked the Dabo Swinney hire to become Clemsons head coach.
Whipped that Clempson ass boyeeeeee!!!!!
Some of the best nfl players on one Bama team
Roll Tide!!! Alabama is back! Just in the Nick of time!!
FACTS! Richt got fired because he could never beat 'Bama and win the SEC championship.
How strange is it to see Alabama ranked #24. The previous year I was at the ULM game where we lost 21-14. I remember driving home wondering why we were paying Saban so much. Boy am I singing a different tune now. After vacating victories, Alabama was 2-6 that year. WOW!!
Who would’ve thought that these 2 teams would play in back to back National Championships in 2016 and 2017
Lil ol' Clemson has been front and center throughout this run of ours. Not this year, tho. Hell, we're not even in the picture much longer I'm afraid.
