Thank you for filming these wonderful old churches that the majority of people will never see. Your films will preserve their beauty for future generations.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful little church and it’s treasures. The monument to Elizabeth and her baby is so beautiful but as you say, poignant.
A beautiful little church. Thank you. Even my local, most magnificent grade 1 listed Crowland Abbey isn’t faring too well right now. The vicar has just retired, having extended his tenure more than once. We now have no resident vicar. Apparently Lincolnshire has more than it’s fair share of grade 1 churches, but not enough clergy to go round. Perhaps Rome could have it back. Tiny churches are just as valuable as ex monasteries, just different. I hope the one in this video isn’t lost to us, whether we believe or not. These buildings are part of our history.
A gem of a church, indeed! Thank you, Allan. It would be a pity to see it go to ruin for the monuments and the glass (tho' late) are precious. From your video it has an holy feel. I pray it remains and will be cared for gently.
What a small treasure of a church! In its day it would have been a true jewel and well loved. It is incredible that so much remains given the ravages of time and a shrinking population. Thanks again for another lovely ramble Allan.
@@allanbarton yes it is such a shame that these small depositories of so much history are literally crumbling away. It is so unfortunate that so much is going to be lost. it is also unfortunate that things appear to be stolen from some of these churches. All this makes your record keeping so important Allan!
A very interesting video. There is nothing quite like an English country church and church yard. I love visiting them but sadly, many of them are locked because of vandalism etc. But the graves are interesting and often very sad like that beautiful memorial to the lady and her baby. Thank you for another informative video. 😃👍
That was absolutely amazing, I really love this channel, because you take us back to a time that has passed, and show us all the little things that make a church beautiful, thank you for your hard work and dedication ❤
Thank you - I worry greatly for its future. There have been no services since Covid and before the average attendance was two. There are signs of impending dereliction.
We have 12,500 medieval churches in England. Many of them are very ancient - just round the corner from me is a church with a tower dating from the 1050s.
@@allanbarton I wish I could visit every one of those churches and cathedrals. They are just so very beautiful and when I watch videos or see pictures of them it feels like I've been transported back in time and the feeling it gives me is absolutely indescribable. Haunting, ethereal and eternal. So moving.
So beautiful I know a lot of churches are being turned into housing preserving their historical contex in some cases one of our local Methodist churches is in the process of this transformation now
Absolutely fascinating and beautiful. I wish I could travel the whole of the UK and see all the historic churches. They fascinate me to no end. Endlessly fascinating. Don't know why I repeated myself. But, there it is. Places like this transport me to the past and are just so beautiful and enchanting. Thank you very much for sharing. 💕🌹🇺🇲 Please, don't stop taking us on these ethereal jaunts into the hauntingly beautiful past. I don't believe in ghosts but I certainly can sense those who came before. Thank you so much. ❣️🌹
Very easy to see the benches and the windows on the sunny side. Not being familiar with the churches, when you say that you fear for the church’s future, what will happen? Will these churches and graveyards just be left to ruin? Or will the church be demolished, and the stained glass destroyed? In the US, older churches are usually demolished and burials exhumed and relocated. Your churches seem so much more important to save due to the age and history. I know you are busy but you are showing me things I have never seen before and I have questions!! No answers required Doctor, just keep making videos!!
The difference in the state of Dame Elizabeth from the older photo to the current view on your video is sad. I wish we took better care of our past. By the way, you have an excellent voice.
Thank you and my only suggestion would be to allow the viewer to read the inscriptions. The memorials may be artistically interesting but they exist to encourage passers by to reflect on the existence of a once loved soul.
Ive been there and served Mass at this church ( when Binbrook was in interregnum) and Father Edward MNartin was PP of St Augustine of Hippo and he was looking after the Binbrook group of parishes. Congregation of 2 plus Father Edward and Myself. One was one of the churchwardens and the other was a member of our congregation who hadn't been able to attend St Augustines in the morning due to work issues. I believe that under the new Lincoln Diocesan arrangements, this will become a festival Church with very few regular services ( Say Christmas and Easter) but will be available for occasional services. It was a bit of hike across a field to get to it. The church was very damp and dirty as I remember it
Another fabulous video. Thank you. You should pay a visit to the church of St Andrew and St Patrick in Elveden. It’s a lovely wee village church and has an interesting burial in the churchyard.
Another Lincolnshire gem of a church that sadly will not have many years left to stand unless it can be re-purposed. Conversion to domestic occupancy may not be entirely desirable but in the absence of any viable alternative has to be the solution....of course some important listing restrictions need to be applied....the world is changing i cannot see the fashion for "ruffs" returning any time soon.
Thank you for this virtual visit to a beautiful church. It is sad that it seems neglected. How did the 15th century stained glass fragments escape Reformation iconoclasm? I thought that Edward VI's government had been brutally thorough.
There is a lot of medieval glass surviving in churches - though this has scraps. Very little was actually removed during the Reformation, primarily due to the cost of replacing it. A lot of medieval glass disappeared in the 18th century when there was a rage for clear glass and glass was cheaper.
@@allanbarton there seems to be a huge difference according to location. North vs south of England divide. I always hate the destruction of art and symbolism. It's not a question of religious or political affiliation. I'm a historian. I want the past preserved so it can be studied. Your videos offer a lot for people to study from their own homes 🙂
Mattersey church was in my PhD on Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire medieval stained glass. It has some lovely things including two amazing medieval sculptures. It's twenty years since I was last there - time to revisit!!
Dame Elizabeth died in 1604 , as you say in childbirth. I looked her up because I’m a Dress geek and her gown is from the very end of Elizabeth’s period with the wheel farthingale which is eliminated shortly after this carving.
@@allanbarton for a moment I couldn't get my original question to load, and was shocked by the Nilism. I was about to inbox you to check all was okay! Haha. I'm now assuming (I know I know. It's where most of our accessible collective history is in this country, certainly. I sincerely hope we can conserve enough before It's too late and it's gone.
A melancholy but lovely funerary monument. Very sad to see the loss of the putti. I would not be surprised if they have been stolen given their decorative nature and very high quality.
One stolen, one is in safe keeping. Yes, exceptional quality - doing this sort of video and publicising these things makes it more difficult for thieves to get away with stealing them and selling them.

Yes, we can see the carving on the bench ends and the glass window you weren't sure we could see - such a depth of history, from medieval to modern.
What a lovely little church!! It's a pity that it is SOOOOOO neglected!!

The C of E in Lincolnshire is really struggling with resources. I suspect many churches will be lost. Crowland is lovely, I really need to revisit it.

The stained glass is exquisite! Please remind the minders, protectors of the church to protect the windows and other works of art.
There is no one here to protect it, no churchwarden and no congregation. Sadly a common state of affairs now.

I was chatting to someone today who said that prior to Covid there was a congregation of one. Nothing now, sadly. It is a major problem.
Thank you for this film. Please do clean the camera lens which has a circular blob spoiling most of the film.
What a shame that this historic building is deteriorating. Is the church still in use for services?
Sadly no, not regularly.

Are they buried there…
They are buried in a vault under the altar.
maybe a letter to the local warden would tell you where the putty has gone
