What is that plastic part being installed next to the timing chain at 5:24? A tensioner? The thought of plastic parts in an engine just kind of generally concerns me.

Thats a timing chain guide, all car manufacturers use plastic chain guides. They hold up pretty well if oil is changed on time.
It's probably nylon. If it was metal it would make a bunch of racket as the chain ran across it.
