    I forgot to mention in the video that the interfacing I use is the Pellon P44f lightweight fusible interfacing. There is a link to it in the description box. I buy mine an entire bolt at a time because I use it for memory bears, t-shirt quilts, and a whole lot more!

    Great tips! Experience teaches us so much! A thought I had while you were showing your index card ... you could create one with the piece descriptions and laminate it. Use a dry erase marker to indicate fabric assignments. Erase when finished.

      That's a great idea! I work on 6+ bears at a time now so I right them in a composition book with two bears on the front of a page and two on the back. Thinking about typing it up and printing several copies to use in the future.

If I were to make 10" or 12" bears, will they be harder to make because they're small? Also, what size eyes and nose should I order for them? I only make bags, so this is all new to me. I only ever sewed 2 or 3 bears at a time so I didn't mix up the pieces. I would sew the sets at once (ex - sew all the legs, all the arms, the two heads, etc). Other than that I don't have many tips to help with batching.

    Not sure about this ... but if I fold the fabric in half inside out....why would I need to reverse pattern pieces like the arms, legs. If I cut double like that, the pieces work out ok.

    • @Whitney_Sews
      @Whitney_Sews  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can definitely do it that way. The reason I reverse my pieces is because I only cut one layer at a time. I interface, trace and cut the pieces one at a time to get the most accurate cuts and placement on the material (because I use clothing for memory bear orders).

    Thank you for that tutorial. It’s very well done, I love it. Wanted to know from anyone, can you wash it stuffed up as it is, or should you take the stuffing out and re-sew it each time. Just wondering what your experiences have been with regard to washing them. Thanks again for a great tutorial. Will be trying my hand at this soon. :)

    • @Whitney_Sews
      @Whitney_Sews  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spot clean or hand wash if it gets really bad (leaving it stuffed) squeeze out most of the water without being too tough on it. Put in dryer on low heat long enough to get out excess water then hang to finish drying. You want it to fully dry in under 24 hours (preferably less) or it might start smelling funky. Hope that helps. I would not take the stuffing out unless absolutely necessary. The more times you open and resew the seams the weaker the fabric gets

    I think I may have picked the wrong type of interfacing. I am having an issue with the material not wanting to see right. The interfacing is sticking to the presser foot. I am using heat n bond ultrahold iron on adhesive. Unfortunately I have done this on an Irreplaceable shirt and have no more material to cut more patterns out. Do you know a way that I can fix this issue so I can possibly still use the pieces I have already cut and have the heat n bond on?

    • @Whitney_Sews
      @Whitney_Sews  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never worked with heat and bond so I'm not really sure what could be done. Is it a double sided interfacing, is that why it's sticking to things?

      They aren't sold in single quantities. There are links in the video description box for the ones I use. I recommend making at least one practice bear first. On occasion I would mess up and get the eyes crooked and have to remake the face which uses an new set, so having a few extra is not bad.

  • @19Celia57

    I would like to make memory/keepsake bears for profit. How do you make sure that you get clean clothing with no bed bugs? One of our grandsons currently has a bed bug infestation in the apartment building and it freaks me out to think that someone would hand me a bag of clothes and then I have creepy crawlers come into my home.

    • @Whitney_Sews
      @Whitney_Sews  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I was pretty intentional about the orders I took since I only made 6-10 bears a month. They were all from people I knew or friends of friends. If someone knows they had bed bugs and knowingly gives you textiles from their home that is terrible. But I know mistakes happen so you would want to have a system in place for piece of mine. Research how to kill bed bugs. Maybe you can have a little freezer and immediately put the clothes in there for a few days. I know that works with rice, flour, etc that might have bug eggs in it. Also be up front about bed bugs with people and let them know if there is a chance they have them in their home that you won't be making bears for them at this time. Hope that helps.

    Hi Whitney! I have a sweater that belonged to my mother before she passed away and I'd love to incorporate it into a memory bear. I'm thinking I would definitely use interfacing to stabilize it. I think comments were closed on the pattern video. I was wondering if you have a recommendation on a smaller bear pattern? I would love to make about ten of these, but don't have as many baby clothes as I'd need from my son who passed away. I could use receiving blankets and blankets, but I still feel like a 9 or 12 would be better for what I'm picturing!

    • @Whitney_Sews
      @Whitney_Sews  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The comments are open on every video of mine...must of been a youTube issue. All the good patterns I know of make larger bears. You will probably need to google and see if there are some patterns online that would work. You can try a few with regular fabrics first. Then if you like them plan, plan, plan what will be cut from each piece and cut the most important pieces first (ex - face and body front) and if you start running out of fabric the legs, back, and arms can be the receiving blankets. I've made one of the 18 inch bears from a newborn outfit and receiving blankets. It was pretty stressful because I knew if I made one mistake there wouldn't be enough fabric. I needed to piece together the front body pieces to get them large enough. Here's pics if you want to see it - facebook.com/pg/WhitneySewsMemories/photos/?tab=album&album_id=831505387056736

    Thank you for this video! Question: What is the cost involved in making this : including the pattern, poly, interfacing, buttons, etc.? I have a friend who is looking for someone to make these from her recently departed baby. I love all the tips and hints you provided. I might try my hand at it if it is feasible (I am a quilter, no experience with this kind of sewing).

    • @Whitney_Sews

      It's hard to figure the cost for one bear because the supplies come in larger quantities. The eyes and noses (links for the ones I use are in the video description) are $1.99 for each bag, but have enough to make several bears. The stuffing is cheaper the more you buy at once. I buy 10 lb boxes at Joanns when they are 50% off which is enough for 10 bears. Pellon P44f lightweight fusible is about $1 per yard regular price, but goes on sale for up to 60% off at Joanns (you will need 2-3 yards per bear). The pattern is $1.99 at Wal-Mart if you can find it (look in the bottom drawer). If you can't then get the rare bear pattern online from simplicity for about $6, it's the newer version. You will want to make a practice bear first so you would be making at least 2 bears. I hope that helps, it's a bit of an investment to get started, but if you hit sales it's not too bad.

    Hey Whitney, I just started following you, amazing. I love your tutorials. I tried my first memory bear with using the same pattern A2115 but I'm having a problem with the head. My bears face looks so much smaller and not like a bear at all...looks like a rat. Do you ever increase the size of the pattern pieces? And how much do you charge for making the bear? I'm not on facebook so I couldn't see what the price would be...thanks

    • @Whitney_Sews
      @Whitney_Sews  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't make any adjustments to the head size. Did you use a larger seam allowance on the head by chance? I charge $50 per bear plus shipping, but I'm booked up for the next few months.

    • @vanessacanniford2087
      @vanessacanniford2087 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Whitney_Sews - I did this on the first one I made (before I found you!!). Whilst reading the pattern it says all seam allowances are 5/8" unless otherwise stated. In tiny font on the actual pattern of the bear, it mentions that all seam allowances for the bear are 1/4". When you make the bigger seam allowance your head looks smaller. I just wanted also to say thank you for the tutorials. I'm in the middle of my fourth bear and love it :)

      Interfaced both fabrics, put washi tape on my pattern where I wanted the straps to be, cute 1 inch wide stripes of denim and pieced between the plaid. Then sewed that on top of a denim piece. Used the washi tape on my pattern to like things up and traced the pattern. Finished bear as normal.

      Sorry, but I've had a ton of people ask me to send them patterns and I just can't send one to everybody. I have seen some on eBay lately that weren't too bad of a price if you factor in how much shipping, eBay fees, and PayPal fees are for the seller. Or you can look into getting a copy of the Simplicity rare bear pattern. It's the newer version of the pattern available only online and part of the proceeds go to fund rare disease research. I'll get the link and post below if you want to check it out.
