    God I miss the 90's.
    Pokemania back then is something that I couldn't explain adequately to someone who wasn't there. When you say it was everywhere, it really was. Pokemon was such a phenomenon that it was kinda ridiculous, and I loved every moment of it as a kid.
    I feel like it could still be that big, but they have made some serious missteps and haven't evolved the formula (no pun intended) enough to keep the fanbase growing like it did initially.

    • @brandonslone8937
      @brandonslone8937 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pokemon is just as great as it was in the 90s imo. It was big then because it was new and fresh. It's 25 years old and that golden age is done now, but they have done a helluva job keeping it relevant

    • @Helljumper91
      @Helljumper91 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@brandonslone8937 don’t get me wrong, Pokémon as a franchise is still very strong. But as with anything, when you repeat the same thing over and over and don’t really change it, it becomes stale and less interesting.
      The games I think have taken a dive in quality since Gen 5 in general. They could do so much more with everything but they want to stay safe and predictable. It will never die, but it will also never truly reach the greatness it could reach with their current direction.

      Type "Bulbapedia Generation III", it will give you a page with all the changes brought by Ruby&Sapphire. Then replace the number III by V, VI, VII and then come back and say that they have repeated the same thing over and over.
      All Pokemon games are the same... except it's not the same region, not the same story, not the same Pokemons, not the same moves, not the same Battle systems, not the same menus, not the same features, not the same catching/evolving methods, not the same stats...
      EDIT : Apparently the word "G..gle" is now censored from youtube comments, wtf?

    • @Helljumper91
      @Helljumper91 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Dante02d12 I didn’t say things didn’t change, but the games all basically flow the same way and there’s no real surprises in them. They’re also technically inferior to other RPG titles and it seems to be getting more and more noticeable since they left the DS/3DS and went to the switch. I mean look at the consensus of reviews on scarlet/violet so far. The games are adequate but not great, and it’s obvious that they aren’t polishing what they make due to their rush to put one out every 2 years.

    I miss the Pokemon hype of the 90s. I played gens 1 and 2 then dropped the series for almost 13 years then got hooked when a co worker said "wanna see my pokemon?" And showed me the Gen 3 game he was playing on an emulator on his phone. That was it, showed me how to tet the emulator I downloaded and replayed Blue (felt like being a kid again stayed up almost a full weekend playing) recently started buying used systems and games to play old ones and got a Switch just to play the gen 8 games. Happy to ve be back, I missed the series.

      I miss the hype from the 90’s too. Born in ‘91 and all I wanted to do was play red & silver, and open packs. I didn’t get to rip packs much, but the cards meant everything to me (probably because I had very few)
      2020 brought that feeling of hype and obsession with the cards back. So I became a vintage collector/seller and have built a collection that means a TON to me, and the 9 year old version of me. It may be a while until that hype re-visits us, but it’s certainly always in our hearts. May Pokémon live forever 🙏🏼.

    Born in 92, I remember those days fondly. I remember watching the show on UPN when it first started airing in the states and the huge binders filled with cards kids would bring to school. I would beg my parents for Wizard magazine to look at the cards. Gen 1 was awesome but Gen 2 is hands down my favorite, even to this day. Imagine what it was like as a kid to beat the elite 4, only to find out that there’s a whole kanto post game to complete as well. Beating Red in Mt. Silver was icing on the cake.

    I'm 26 and was born in '96, so I feel like I'm a mix between a millennial and a gen Zer. I was only a baby during pokemania, so I sadly didn't get to experience those "Mew under the truck" playground rumors, trading and battling with friends at school, etc., although I do still have some vague memories during those times like the toys and merch I used to have, thanks to my brother, who actually experienced pokemania. Also I used to watch my brother play Pokemon Blue on our old CRT tv (it was through the GB Tower in Pokemon Stadium which lets you play Pokemon Red & Blue on the tv), and I also remember him having a binder that held all his Pokemon cards that he'd show his friends, though he sadly got rid of it years ago. Oh man, we used to have so many pokemon toys and plushies, and we'd watch some of the old VHS tapes of the original series on our old CRT. So in a way, I guess I DID experience pokemania somewhat despite not being a full-on millennial, thanks to my brother.
    Also, sorry if this comment is so poorly worded, I just get extremely passionate about sharing my memories of pokemon and other stuff, like I REALLY wanna share this stuff, but some of my experiences are really hard to put into words at times, so I end up not being able to form clear coherent sentences in the process, lol.

    I was 8 years old when Red and Blue Version released. I got Blue Version on the day I got F-Zero X. Originally I wanted only F-Zero X since I had the SNES F-Zero too, but my dad said he would help me buy another game too. I searched hard for another game I was interested, and when I saw Pokemon Red and Blue, I hesitated. I wasn't sure if I wanted a game I never heard of, but my instincts were telling me to get Pokemon. So I got Pokemon Blue because I loved Blastoise's design. But I ended up starting out with Charmander, ironically. I didn't know there was a Pokemon anime until months later, and the very first episode I saw was called "Battle of the Eevee Brothers" or something like that.

    @adamchalmers5876 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I'd argue gen 1's story is actually one of the better stories. You have your evil team and the gym leaders true. You can blast by without any narrative or context. However, if you go out of your way and explore, you find vague information on the legendary Pokemon and where you can find them. For example, some npcs briefly mention a bird in the mountains, you look through the binoculars and you can see a mysterious bird. If you go to seafoam islands, you'll be rewarded with a chance to catch Articuno. Catching it will give you its background info, completing that story. Then there's the diary entries talking about Mewtwo. There's no prof or gym leader shovel feeding you the backstory. You're reading it from a kids perspective, so you're left to wonder until you make it to the cave and find Mewtwo. The story elements are different than modern games, but they're tied to exploration and discovering. That's what the first gen was al about. The stories are a lot more grand now I guess, but there's no room for exploration as each town has a cutscene unravelling the backstory of the legendary Pokemon on the box.

    As someone who got into Pokémon during the gen 1 phase rather late, around winter/spring 2000, it really was like being immersed in a steaming cultural bath. I can’t adequately recall a moment in-between; one day there’s no pokestuff around but the next there’s loads of it, and this coming from someone who used to frequent video game stores quite a bit. With subsequent Nihonese franchises, such as Digimon, Yugioh, and Beyblade, I do remember the introduction of products and their gradual disappearances. Pokémon has just never seemed to go away entirely.

    The reason the Gameboy didn't have a back lit display was cost, Nintendo was able to make the Gameboy cheap and that's why it absolutely wrecked the game gear, battery life was also a large factor but cost was the biggest one. For anyone interested a Gameboy pocket was $69 and took 2 batteries a game gear was $149 and took 6 batteries but still had less battery life.

    I was in elementary school in the late 90s, so Pokémon was phenomenal in my peak childhood! I have fond memories of getting a Gameboy and Pokémon Blue for Christmas, playing with my friends down the street, trading with my brothers (who had Red version too)! Ah, good times! Before getting the games, we would get up before school to watch episodes of the anime on television. We would be delighted by the PokéRap as it showed us all these "super cool" monsters. I liked the show mostly as a means to appreciate the mon designs (given that the in-game graphics were kinda trash in Gen1). I never got into the card game, but my cousin had a pretty slick collection of them in one of those binders used for baseball cards.
