The Celtic and hammered silvers are all amazing. The Roman enameled broach is so intricate and the strap ends so ornate. The artisans back then took pride in their work with such attention to detail. What a thrill to pull something out of the ground and to know some of its history. Thank you, John, for sharing those finds with us. Get well my friend and will see you on the next dig. Good hunting

Hi John, Greatly enjoyed all four parts of Detectival 2023. The hippocampus is not a mythical beast but rather the genus of the seahorse. A wonderful small creature of the sea that even fascinated the Celts. The Allobroges tribe of Gaul decorated their silver coins with their images.

Thank you so much for this wonderful video, John. Your explanations about the history behind these coins is astounding, you're such a brilliant historian which is why your videos are so valuable to us. Those Roman and Medieval coins and their history is quite remarkable. You should teach a history course with your knowledge.
    Get better, my friend.

Hi John, I'm obviously a complete novice in metal detecting, but I thought that you would enjoy my story.
I borrowed a cheap detector a few times and only found hundreds of bullet casings. That's because this place was a military base in both world wars. The only thing of value was a 1932 silver shilling.
I never found the Viking gold :(
The Vikings were here for about 1000 years, you'd think that they could have lost some treasure :)

The silver cutlery handle at 8:30 is most likely British, I think it's known as the fiddle pattern, with the Griffin family crest. Other than that I have no idea.

It certainly got my heart going for a a minute or so but then spotted some damage on the back and convinced myself it was a fake, so spent all day thinking I'd found a forgery, so when the FLO told me it was real, that's when the adrenaline really kicked in. My first ever gold coin, too. I was buzzing for hours afterwards (and yes, I did a little gold dance on my way out of the finds tent!!)

My hubby who you chatted to found the German Fenning from the Eccles Monastery/ Cathedral from 1762 so we missed out on the other amazing finds apart from as you mentioned so many buttons - I think people must have gone around with their clothes popping open in Oxfordshire 😂 but it was a great weekend and good to chat to you face to face 😄

With you on the lead item at 7.20-7.30, that I am sure is a portion of a medieval lead seal. My late father got a near complete and similar one near Edinburgh with the gothic-style inscription around the edge just as in yours. It was identified as being English in origin, but more than that I can't be sure of as I never found it in his collection after my Dad passed away.

Hi, good to see you have recovered and are feeling better. Thank you for showing some of the collective finds from your weekends adventure in Oxfordshire, it must have been an exhilarating, if cold, time.🤩I am guessing so many indicate their function would have been to pin their clothes together, rather than just be decoration. I have an image of Roman Centurions with their clothes flapping around in the freezing cold. Have a good week.

Given the number of ammunition cases discovered on these rallies, I’d say it might be worth talking to an ammunition collectors guild about providing an expert. I was rather excited by your pin fire shotgun shell, as they match to a rather limited place in history. No doubt all manner of cartridges would be unearthed on these estates and who knows what information might be gleaned from the finds. Thank you for the content.

The spoon may be pewter or pseudo-silver or pure (un-taxed) silver with fake markings. The bottom mark resembles the tree-fish-bell mark from Glasgow but for the silver mark it would have a stamped rectangle background. There is also no datemark or purity mark for silver. I looked for a maker's mark that would match on google to no avail. Probably 19th century judging by the styling/workmanship.

17:18 could that possibly be an artifact of the slave trade?
That said, I would have thought it unusual to depict such a person with a sailors hat maybe.
I'm wondering if this would be anything to do with the somewhat controversial Dutch Christmas time story of 'Black Pete'.
Typically thought of relating to a particularly nasty and persistent Spanish sailor, who would have at the time likely been a person of Moorish descent, he was claimed to sneak in at Christmas to steal the kids presents. There's a whole bunch of parades with someone akin to an English minstrel being chased outs town I believe (probably best to look up the specifics online for yourself as my recollection maybe full of holes...but, generally speaking, that's what goes on)
