When you stay at a guest house like this what do you do with your suitcase and what if you have a big suitcase and a small one

I always encourage to travel light but usually there is a little storage space available in most guesthouses I stayed at (before check-in). I also suggest a service in Japan that can send your oversized luggage to your next hotel/guesthouse destination so you dont have to lug it around constantly (you'll be doing a lot of walking)

Honestly, I can't seem to remember the exact name/location :(
It was off the main street in the 'modern' area of Kanazawa, close to a music store. I tried to find it on Google Maps again but couldn't geolocate it

So if i buy the JR Pass can I reserve Shinkansen seats ahead of time online? It looks like for the most part the JR Pass is activated once you get to the airport?

The JR Pass is activated from the moment you run it in the turnstile. I always reserved my seats at any train station which has the green shinkansen kiosk or the ticket counter. Didn't really try anything online but I'm sure it's possible :)

Is it pretty straight forward to get from kanazawa to takayama using trains?

Oh yeah. I don't remember all the train times but you can go through Toyama (to the east) and down towards Takayama. There's also the option to go to Shirakawa (another historic place to the south in the mountains) and then a bus route east to Takayama. Could ultimately break it down to 2 days if you want the Shirakawa / Takayama experience 🙂
