ABOUT US: We are Alex and Elaina, a couple in our 20s who are currently living on the 3-acre farm in southern Pennsylvania where Alex grew up. We have a garden, backyard chickens, and build or fix anything that we need to. We still work corporate day jobs, but are working to eventually leave the 9-5 lifestyle in favor of a self-built, debt-free, homestead on 6 acres nearby.
We upload a TH-cam video every Saturday night at 7️⃣pm EST, and post daily on Instagram!

There’s so much I don’t know, like I didn’t even know front loading concrete trucks (14:20) were a thing. Thanks to your video at least I’ll know they’re an option

Hopefully it helps! Tons of random little facts in construction like that

We are so impressed that you guys are building your own home. We are starting our barn foundation end of this month, but we've hired a foundation contractor. Good luck with the build and we look forward to watching the progress.

Thanks for following along!! We do have a mason crew coming in to lay block on the footer, then we will do the slab prep. Then another crew of flatwork guys will come to place and finish the slab, that is definitely not something we could handle!

Nice work . I like to see people that want to do things right without taking shortcuts. Refreshing

A little late I know, but a 12v dc water pump off Amazon and a spare battery does wonders for the standing water. The garden hose discharge really helped. A little hint to anyone about to do this

It's crazy! The block masons come tomorrow to lay the stem walls. Thanks for the well wishes! Our schedule was slightly delayed with pouring the footer which pushed back the masons but that's okay.. We want to take our time on the project so that we can enjoy every second of it!🙂

Those footings look shallow. Guess it must meet code where you are. All our footings are 600mm (minimum) which is 24 inches.

why would the cement driver say DONT DO THAT when you expressed interest in construction???I think most people in construction, including myself, love our jobs. I couldnt do the office life and building things as you know is very rewarding, even if its fort other people. Dont listen to the driver of a truck, talk to someone who actually works in the field, I think the answer would be different.

Haha he must have had a bad experience or two who knows. I've definitely heard mixed feelings on it.

@@MasonDixonAcres if you do quality work and take pride there’s really nothing to dislike. If you just do it for a paycheck which so many people do, then yeah there’s a good chance you’re not doing something you like doing, it was just an easy job to get without a college degree but if you’ve never had a passion for it then you’re going to burn yourself out. Choose your career , don’t let your career just happen.

I was thinking about what he said too because I personally find construction fascinating! Then I thought about real estate agents. Many of them say "I sell houses to people and can't even afford to buy my own" so maybe it's the same with many construction workers. They build homes they can't afford themselves. I'm sure the guy was thinking "I should've been an engineer" but idk..I don't know why he said it. Kinda bummed me out when he did..hahaha

@@laurieclarkson9180 we do often work on things we couldnt afford but what we can also do is buy houses that no one else wants and put the work in and turn it into a house we could have never afforded if it was turn key. I have fully renovated our last two houses from the studs up...houses that I bought cash, no mortgages, just a lot of hard work. I dont know a lot of guys or girls that are willing to do this much work and sacrifice living in a partial job site sometimes but its possible. The fact that some guys hate construction is just a matter of working for someone else or doing menial jobs and not feeling worth it. I have felt that way for sure but I now own my own company and really do enjoy it.
