Just about to start rebuilding my '65 LTD steering gear. I found this video extremely useful and the tip about the bushing might have saved me double work. Thanks for this !

Yes, if you don't replace the bushing, It will still leak.

@@OldCarAlley Thanks. I cleaned and opened my steering gear unit. Slight suprise... It's a reman unit, parts from different years. The main shaft/housing is from 1979 (D9AC) and has needle bearing: INA FC65614. Now I need to chase a new one. Shaft was in really good shape but seals were stone hard.

@@PekkaLähde-n1i Your lucky to have the needle bearing, they rarely ware out.

@@OldCarAlley True. The needle bearing seems to be ok, no coloring to show that it has been run dry/very hot. I think I'll end up putting it back and just replacing the seals and hoses.

Rebuilding went well. Works perfectly and no leaks. Thanks again for extremely valuable help.

I have never done this before. My 72 C10 steering box needs new seals so I plan on attempting to reseal it/rebuild if necessary myself. Thanks for all the videos, very informative and I really enjoy watching you bring these old beauties back to life.

I'm amazed of all the tools you have to work on cars and a little jealous lol

It a collection of 45 plus years. Been working on things since I was about seven or eight. Dad brought home a old Briggs & Stratton horizontal shaft engine that a coworker of his gave him. We took it apart together, and got it back together and running. Then dad told me to try it myself... It ran again.... and I have been hooked on fixing mechanical things since. That means I needed tools, all kinds of tools.

Nicely done. Small problems make big ones. Glad you changed the bushing. You said it had a small leak, I was afraid the bushing was eggshape.

Usually when they leak, the bushing is worn.

Hope they didnt run the P/S dry..the steering head looked good..you did great with those seals..i had a leaking steering head on my old 71 f-100 had to do the same thing..so the pump is next right ? That will be good to see as well.. don't forget to show the wiper motor i want you to see the glass circuit breaker..lol..till then Cheers friend 🍻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

I won't need the pump until after the engine is in, so I might wait to go threw the pump. I was thinking of putting the front suspension back together next. As soon as I have the paint for the inner fenders, I will pull the fenders and spray them, and get the fenders ready for paint too... maybe even paint them.

I was just checking my iPad for anything new about 20 minutes ago and thought " I'll bet Howard is editing today's video", and I was right! Question: do you have any idea what that car will be worth when it is finished? How big of a compressor do you have!

    • @OldCarAlley

After looking at some sold ones, that sold in the $28,000 to $32,000 range, that weren't as nice as what this one will be, I was thinking the low 30's maybe.
