He says he liked first two episodes, but anime just kept repeating that one joke. So he started to hate it. Even if it's absurd, if joke is repeated 100 times it's gonna get stale and boring. Toxic mf's like you don't even try anymore
Bocchi tries to be absurdist and relatable and be relatable but doesn't succeed in either of them 😅 You have the right to like an anime it doesn't mean it was well written 😮
@@Yo_Cami The premise of her personality is immensely relatable. The exaggerated expressions are a source of comedy. If it weren't for the latter, it would just be sad and awkward. I never said it was well-written. Bocchi's character is conceptually the worst possible case of social anxiety with spontaneous relief wherever the plot calls for it. I can totally see how people would find it unrelatable, especially those who don't have experience with social anxiety. For people who suffer with social anxiety, her responses are familiar yet exaggerated. That's why you see so many people saying things like "She's me fr fr." For those who don't, however, she seems like a totally unbelievable caricature. I _feel_ like that's where Joey is coming from, and he's just flat out wrong about it.

(btw he really liked the figure and was so touched over me giving him it that he gave me a free autograph as a thank you)
i can see why its just so hard to believe why anyone would be THAT socially awkward ive never met such a person and if i did id probly react with "bro whats wrong with you" but there may be some very rare people like that
“I’ve never met such a person and if I did I’d probly react with “bro what’s wrong with you?”” Hmmm I wonder why someone would act like that with that type of reaction, it’s definitely not why people like that are too scared to approach people

I understand that BTR might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but dismissing it with, "No one acts like that in real life," comes off as pretty shortsighted. While I don’t relate to Bocchi all the time, there were definitely moments in the anime where I saw myself in her and really understood what she was going through.
Yep! The Ep when she had ppl over her house. The stress and anxiety she goes thru. Worrying if they’d have a good time or not. I stil go thru that even when I know my mates and I are just gonna drink cheap beer and play video games lmao…. But I need it to be perfect!! 😅
Watch episode 11 of Makeine to see what extreme social anxiety is really like. I don’t like Bocchi the Rock because her moments are comedic and over the top. She is like any stereotypical anxious character, just for some reason she gets a lot of credit. Then you tell people you don’t relate to Bocchi and they act like you’ve never experienced social anxiety in your life. That is quite rude, if I may say so.
@@bonfist7277 There are many forms of expression in media. Bocchi the rock is at its core a comedy show/manga. The relatability doesn't come from the pinpoint accuracy with which certain aspects of social anxiety or loneliness are portrayed, but rather how it is portrayed in context to the rest of the show. It is the tiny details with how characters react, the world view bocchi and others have and the way people in and around the main cast act that pull the portrayal back into reality. It is not realistic but it feels that way because it knows what it is trying to say. Makeine does basically the exact same thing so I find it quite strange that you would say that episode 11 of Makeine is a good portrayal of social anxiety as opposed to bocchi. The main difference is that makeine, especially during that arc/episode, exists much more in the drama sphere. It takes time to dwell on things and draws proper conclusions for situations. I personally think the way it is done in Bocchi the rock feels less idyllic. I think stories like makeine tend to fail in doing what they aim because of the over dramatisation of the subject. It allows for the characters and feelings to really be left to fester and potentially be resolved in a satisfactory way. But I would personally argue that that is much less realistic than the more light hearted but certainly not less significant comedic portrayal in bocchi the rock. That is not to say that I don't think the drama approach has no value and cannot be done exceptionally well. I agree that Makeine is quite a good example of that approach done well. But this very thing can also quickly become a form of self indulgence when done in that way. Also regarding people telling you that you don't know social anxiety because you don't relate to Bocchi, if that happens, which I doubt as that is quite a weird conversation to have, are themselves missing the point. Everyone relates to different aspects of a story and people interpret things in different ways. It just so happens that with bocchi this feeling of social anxiety became more tangible to a larger audience.
@@Ichigo2k9Now I'm not gonna dislike Joey over Bocchi The Rock cause hating someone over Anime is very stupid and I'm sure he's encountered plenty of awkward antisocial people. @@vsvbwr8694 I mean it's just exaggerated because we are in her head and it's anime, of course no one is THAT socially anxious (maybe like a couple of people in the world), but many people feel like her, because people with social anxiety tend to really exaggerate how awkward the situation is in their head It's not that deep
This is the same Joey that said "The Wind Rises is the most mid movie he's ever watched" just to admit he never watched it in a later video and said "Mushoku Tensei doesn't deserve to be that high" in his Reddit's top 100 anime video when he hasn't even watched past the first half of Season 1. Notice how dishonest or straight up wrong all of his criticisms are too. "The music is bad" (literally likes K-On), "No one is that socially awkward IRL" (the sheer ignorance it takes to say this), "No one watches this show to see Bocchi gain the confidence to perform on stage" (just so wrong, why are you even talking at this point). The man is a disingenuous contrarian that just wants to look different, really no other way to explain his inconsistent and ridiculous takes.
Mushoku tensei doesn't deserve to be that high considering S2 is mid at best , especially for the fact it ranked exactly higher than made in abyss in that list , which is the best anime ever
tbf mushoku tensei doesnt deserve to be however high it is but ya joey is contrarian and just lies for no reason which every trash taste fan agrees is hella annoying
Someone's gotta explain to me how Bocchi isn't RIDDLED with absurdist comedy. Some of the most creative moments in the show could be taken right out of Nichijou. Also, complaining about "tElliNg a DeEp stORy" being pointless because the audience is just in it for CGDCT or some shit is making blatant generalizations about the Bocchi fandom. Finally, Joey's a musician, you'd think he'd at least acknowledge that there's great music. He's straight up just being contrarian. Edit: Props to Garnt for going to bat for Oshi No Ko. Not perfect by any means, but WAY better than whatever the wacky shippers make it out to be.
Joey is not a musician. He happens to just know how to play an instrument and uses that ability as an excuse to believe his opinions should he held in higher regard. He has never been able to debate as a musician, and that was extremely prevalent when Kevin Penkin came to the show. This is the same guy that thinks percussionists =/= musicians. He is hating on music directly influenced by some of his favorite Japanese bands, and even called it J-Pop. Joey is closer to a music enthusiast and has a strong personal connection with it, but he lacks any objectivity or strong musical knowledge beyond playing an instrument.
th-cam.com/video/nuL8heXZKzg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=1lUP_LnBhhXiGcy9 here at 4:45 Joey said "the music is fucking stellar". He is just hating for the sake of hating it, which is really disappointing to me.
@@DrOshawott He's takes are the worst because he can't even back them up properly. If Connor come's out as arrogant he can admit to it, Joye on the other hand is like a arrogant fanatic that will never listen that he's points are objectively wrong
I really liked the 11th episode of Makeine following Komari that shows what it is really like to have extreme social anxiety. In Bocchi the rock, she is practically in a safe space. We don’t see her experience missed opportunities in the story because of how she acts. All her moments are absurd and stereotypically comedic depictions of anxiety. When you tell people you don’t agree with how Bocchi the rock depicts social anxiety, you will have people telling you that you just don’t experience anxiety yourself.
By Joey’s logic most anime out there is bad then. JOJO is bad because no one has stands and acts like JOJO characters IRL. It’s funny how he likes Nichijou, no one acts like the characters in that anime. He said it’s different because it’s absurd comedy? Absurd according to google means unreasonable or illogical. By Joey’s logic again doesn’t Bocchi’s reaction to things because of social anxiety counts as absurd because from his words “no one acts like that irl.”
dudes a complete "yes man" and a contrarian at the same time. You watch episodes of this podcast and most of the time you see joey say stuff and contradicts himself in the next . Or dude just completely lies. what an asshole
Joey lost the argument with his opening statement. He’s comparing Anime to “Real Life” anti social ppl. Yes ppl irl are like that. But also, a type of person is exaggerated in diff forms of Media to convey its story. That what Bochii does to its MC in occasions. Even Anime that’s grounded does this. For ex. “Honey and Clover” and some of its characters.
A Honey and Clover mention is like seeing a unicorn in an Arby's parking lot... anyways I absolutely agree with you here. It's a statement coming from sheer ignorance.
I feel like Bocchi the rock is a bad depiction because it is stereotypically comedic. It doesn’t show what it is really like, yet it gets a lot of credit. I watched the 11th episode of Makeine and I think that showcased the perfect experience of someone that has extreme social anxiety.
@@bonfist7277 IMO Bocchi is a good depiction *because* it doesn't show "what it's really like" instead it shows what it feels like. I can't speak for the example you gave but every other depiction of social anxiety I've seen sucks because its focus on realism makes it loose any form of authenticity and feels more like a text book description, but because bocchi is less focused on realism it ends up being more authentic to me because it captures the feeling not the reality. Also part of the way I got over social anxiety was by realizing how ridiculous and stupid it is and I feel like bocchi shines a spot light on that and can help people that way.
@@lilpenn7516 It is stupid to you, if you think of this experience like something from Bocchi. My experience is that I don’t want to bother people, or look stupid for making a mistake. It gives me this paralyzing fear to act, and I mask it and try to act as normal as possible. Otherwise, I stay home. In Makine, Komari shows what it is like to miss opportunities and be treated like less of a person by those who genuinely care about you. As you say, there it doesn’t give some weird graphic to display how they feel. It’s just raw and shows you by how they act and what they say instead.
@@lilpenn7516 Exactly. There are anime that can depict social anxiety more accurately, but in a medium to entertain people and get people to relate, capturing the feeling is most important. And it may be hard to believe, but I think Bocchi did so well BECAUSE she was relatable to so many people. No, there aren’t millions of people that literally did what Bocchi does… but extreme thoughts for normal people are regular thoughts for Bocchi. She is an extreme form of the archetype done in a funny way to have others relate, to tell a story about how you can improve, no matter your situation. Series like Komi or Watamote are like this, but I think those series were more extreme and less relatable than Bocchi (people can have illusions of grandeur and performance anxiety, but not everyone has such crippling social anxiety as to not speak).
I love this podcast but I can’t fucking stand Joey. He’s so pompous whenever he gives an opinion on something. I’m one of those very introverted, socially awkward people that loved Bocci the Rock and resonated with her social struggles.
He's the reason I don't even watch Trash Taste anymore. I have fun watching Garnt and Connor argue over the smallest things, or just talking opinions on stuff, but Joey sometimes sounds like he's just talking down on people. "Pompous" really is the best word to describe it.

Joey acknowledges that socially awkward people exist. He's told plenty of stories of him meeting them. He just doesn't like Bocchi cause it reminds him too much of Watamote. He likes riling up Anime fans and I get it cause they're psychos who would break your house down over not liking their favorite character. He's not dense, he's just a clown.

There was a time in my life where my anxiety was so bad that I would legit break down crying at the thought of having to do a phone call to make an appointment. Joey isn't obligated to enjoy Bocchi the Rock but him being completely ignorant of people with severe social anxiety existing is really rubbing me the wrong way and I hope he educates himself on the topic to not sound so insensitive.
His take on Bocchi genuinely makes me like him less as a person. Not because he doesn't like the anime I like, but because he insists on saying people who suffer from social phobia and who acts awkward in social situations like me don't exist. He's being deliberately ignorant and dismissing all the mental struggle I had to face my entire life because of this crap. It would be like someone going to his face, and telling him that he never put any effort in working an honest day in his life, despite the fact he created more than one successful youtube channel, and a successful clothing brand.
thats fair, i think him just outright dismissing that people who have social anxiety have it 'that bad' and that they're exaggerating is not great like at all, and when its more so for clicks at this point, it feels gross

This isn't even a debate if the show is good or not. This really has nothing to do with defending it, it has to do with Joey either disbelieving or just ignorantly not caring to educate himself about the topic the show covers. I'd like to think Joey is really just playing this up for the Trash Taste episode but he keeps doubling down over multiple episodes over a large course of time this discussion has taken place so it makes me worried that's not the case. it’s honestly really disheartening :( social anxiety can get that debilitating (bocchi is exaggerated obvs but it could reflect how someone feels on the inside) and the fact that he dismisses them as non existent is so frustrating
Sadly that’s Joey’s take on everything lately, I still can’t believed they had to force him twice to watch Arcane just because he was too dug in his contrarian mindset. It really feels like he’s approaching everything like he’s in this cringy adolescent phase were you only like things because they’re « deep » and « niche » despite not getting any of the actual messages of the work. He’s acting like a teen hipster. Which is sad because before he had really good insight on some of the stuff he actually took the time to watch
@@sharlockshacolmes9381- Oh he’s definitely a hipster as I’m certain the actual reason he hates a lot of this stuff is cause it’s popular. He admitted quite some time back that he hates Yuri On Ice for that reason (which the YOI fanbase rightfully dragged him for) and given that he initially liked Boochi when it was on episode 7 during it’s initial release when it’s popularity was at a more modest like level indicates on this as it was later in it’s run that Boochi took off to the status it has now and it wasn’t long after that we got Joey’s bs takes on it. So it’s most likely that he’s bitter over something he was liking becoming popular.
bocchi literally has a scene where the show turns into a 3d modelling software and has a 3d model of bocchi fly through some shit and thats just one example. if thats not absurdist idk what is
To be fair, I wouldn't have bat an eye if Joey just said that he didn't enjoy watching BtR and ended it there, but his reasons are just so easily disproven to be untrue that it irks me so.
I've been to toyosato highschool (the school where k-on school is based off) this may, and there's a section at the library where u see bocchi and k-on fan drawings together, and i also managed to get a flyer with bocchi and k-on characters standing side-by-side. They didn't treat bocchi as a competitor to k-on and didn't create a toxic environment where both sides attack each other's preference, that's something manifested by the west and is thankfully not seen when you go to japan
There's actually a clip of Joey saying that the music is and I quote "fucking stellar", idk what happened for him to behave like bocchi killed his family or something to shit on it so much now lmao, people were sharing that clip and clowning on him on reddit 😭
Also nobody acts like Jojo characters IRL, so he suppose to be thinking Jojo is also garbage? Just a man can't accept that his take is idiotic and he sticks to it simply to be "not like everybody esle"
The main focus in Bocchi is the social anxiety and the comedy, while in Jojo it's the fights and trying to get to the main villain of that part. That analogy doesn't seem to fit the situation.
@@hafirenggayuda Because that is the main point of the show, just like how people rate comedy anime by how funny or unfunny it is or with battle shounen if the fights are bad, powerlevel doesn't make sense or too much plot armor etc.
To be honest I don't care if he doesn't watch anime anymore but the way he behaves acting full of himself and delibeletily being a jerk is really annoying. Every reason he brought up hating Bocchi was so surface level bullshit I wouldn't even be surprised if he generated those line by AI. And by his logic it doesn't make sense that he likes K-ON I mean all the statementg he mentioned not liking Bocchi (socially awkward not funny haha) directly applies Akiyama Mio (from K-ON) and if we are talking about gag relying on certain pattern being used for writing funny moments it's exactly how the comedy scenes were done in K-ON (Ritsu having her energetic personality and her fundness to prank others, and Mio being overly shy and easily scared etc...) using these as base mixing it with some exaggerated reaction and we have everything that K-ON comedy consist of.And saying you like K-ON because it is about some people coming together doing some cool music while the whole show is just cute girls doing cute thing with no progression while Bocchi had actual music related themes (for example acquiring place to play music, selling tickets) is also really weird. At this point he is just a walking contradiction.
Lmao did he just say... OK I never heard of Bocchi but he's complaining that her character is TOO exaggerated...? An anime character being TOO exaggerated... No one acts like that... Bro what lmfao does he like any anime at all??
He genuinely doesn't like anime anymore. I think he hasn't watched a single anime in like 5 years. He may used to be The Anime Man but nowadays hes more like The Normie Man.
Saying Bochi is trying to hard to be K-On is like saying Guns N Roses is trying to hard to be Led Zeppelin. It may be true, but that doesn’t make Guns N Roses a bad band.
I watched both shows and I never got that impression. BTR is being its own thing. K-On is also its own thing. I liked BTR's depiction of performances more.
Actually offended by Joey's take and its not just because I'm a BTR fan, bc there's 'trash takes' and then there's straight up not believing anti social people exist just because he's never seen them/"ive never been that anxious so it cant be real", LIKE NO SHIT YOU AINT SEEING EM THEY ANTI SOCIAL!? That's not a trash taste that's just ignorance. And his takes on the OST is actually a crime, like they made a whole album + 3 extra songs, and not even using some of them in the show either, I dont care if its not his favorite kind of music but to call it BAD? Are you fucking kidding me.
It's just like saying "s*icidal people are just sad, they should get over it" His takes reek reddit troll energy but watching them unfold IRL is just ugh
Joey probably hasnt watched a full episode of Bocchi yet. He has done this sort of things before, by calling a show mid while not even watching the show at all (Wind Rises). The boys supposedly hates YTbers like the Paul brothers who farms and plays it up for the camera, but somehow Joey has resorted to do the exact same thing himself
Saying that "no one acts like Bochi" is not only inaccurate but also dismissive of the wide range of experiences people with social anxiety face. Social anxiety manifests differently for everyone, and while Bochi’s behavior may appear exaggerated for comedic or dramatic effect, it still captures the essence of what many people go through-self-doubt, avoidance, and overwhelming panic in social situations. Anime often amplifies traits for narrative impact, but that doesn't make them any less valid or relatable; in fact, it highlights the severity of how social anxiety can feel. Claiming her portrayal is unrealistic undermines the efforts to bring visibility to such conditions and risks alienating viewers who see themselves in her struggles. Instead of dismissing her as "unrealistic," her character should be appreciated for offering empathy and awareness, even in an exaggerated medium. By the way, I also think he's just typically trying to be quirky with the disliking music thing, but who knows. Anime usually handles topics like social anxiety very poorly and kinda tropey, but Bochi is a show which finally got it right in all of anime.
Introverts will socialize but will feel be drained by the experience. Think plowing a field or lifting weights. They need recovery time after. People with social anxiety will experience varying levels of fear related to even the thought of social engagements. For some, when accompanied by overthinking, it can lead to intense delusions. This is what we see with Hitori. She's an extreme case that doesn't represent the average person. Personally, Bocchi seems to be a bit _too_ exaggerated to be considered to be realistic. However, none of her traits or responses are very far diverged from reality. It's only the _extent_ of her reactions that pushes her character out of the realm of believability for me. It's particularly the overthinking that pushes her beyond being simply a realistic depiction of someone who suffers from social anxiety into a caricature based on one. But it's precisely that exaggeration that pushes her from being a depressing reflection of a miserable and pitiable existence into loosely-relatable source of joy. Exaggeration is one of the key defining traits of comedy. Without some intentionally exaggerated aspect, most jokes will fail.
Joey out here reminding me why I don't tune in to the podcast anymore. I dealt with enough contrarian hipsters in high school, I don't wanna spend my free time listening to a grown ass man that apparently never outgrew that phase
I havent even watched btr but just the fact that he mentioned before he likes the btr songs and then backtracked, I can understand someone changing opinions, but joey just seems to be doing it to be a contrarian
Have you heard of hikkikomori, Joey? You know, the kind of people who are afraid to step out of their rooms because of how anxious they are? I wonder where these people are, Joey, what country has invented the term for people like that?
The reason people ofete say "No one acts like that in real life," is because you rarely see them in real life. Those with extreme social anxiety are elusive, often retreat indoors, avoiding overstimulating social situations. This is perfectly illustrated in Bocchi the Rock! Bocchi herself rarely goes outside, except for school. The only reason she ventures into the outside world is that she got pulled into joining a band, pushing her out of her comfort zone.
joey is just so freaking frustrating. it's not enough that he doesn't like BTR. it has to be "no one is like that. people like that don't exist." and like. for one thing. it's clearly an absurdist comedy and the fact that he apparently can't understand that it's played up ON PURPOSE really just makes him look like he lacks any kind of media literacy. but also. it's so ignorant and invalidating to act as though severe, intense, and debilitating social anxiety doesn't exist. like it genuinely makes me think less of him as a person, especially since i've seen him get criticism for this take repeatedly and he refuses to adopt any kind of empathy at all. idk even if it wasn't something that personally affected me like anxiety has, that kind of stubbornness rubs me the wrong way. ok trauma dump alert, everyone stop reading now if you don't care: i like bocchi bc yeah, sure, i'm not literally on the floor having seizures and melting through ten planes of existence or whatever, but that's what it feels like in my head when i'm panicking. idk about anyone else, but i'm one like four different medications and a decade of therapy just to *kind of* exist like a normal person. bocchi reminds me a lot of being a teenager who almost flunked out of my senior year because my anxiety was so all-encompassing that i was having meltdowns in the car and couldn't get myself to go to school. i didn't literally hide my closet, but i quit all my instrument lessons, quit all my clubs, and isolated myself entirely. i didn't have to get into a box to exist in the world, but i had to be hospitalized and medicated and therapised until my brain and i could develop the armor necessary to try. if you're taking it literally, yeah, it's stupid. and i don't even think BTR is doing anything particularly revolutionary. but if i just cannot understand this utter invalidation. it's really frustrating. bocchi is just a silly show that resonates with some people. idk.
I can understand not liking an anime because of preferences, but it really feels like bro completely misunderstood Bocchi with the reasons he listed lol. I think that’s why a lot of people are bothered by Joey’s opinion. It almost feels like he went into the anime with a negative attitude. Which I feel like people will do when they’ve been repeatedly bugged by others to watch something.
Just Contrarian stuff. Disliking Bocchi anime is fine but saying that about antisocial people and talking bad about the music just shows he just does it to hate. Especially coming from the fact this guy has hobbies in music and still decides to talk shit about the music. I didn't think the point was to be funny, alone, but relatable. There are tons of people with social anxiety, Japan being the prime example.
Does Joey really not believe extremely introverted people exist? That's so tone deaf... they definately exist, and they'll for sure never want to see you, Joey, because you'll probably treat them terribly.
Bocchi the Rock is great. Of course it is over the top, it is an anime, but if watch it knowing about neurodiversity, then there are some really brilliant and subtle moments. For example, the band finding a way to work with she inability to make eye contact was all done through visuals and music. Ryou hears her loosing the bands tempo again, and like a good bassist signals with just a look to Nijika to use her drum beats to reset them. Or when the friends are around her house, and she is actually enjoying it, but eventually she hits her social interaction wall and just breaks down. Or that Kita is secretly just as neurotic as Hitori, but hides by being a people pleaser, often at great personal expense. Or that is brave enough to show for many people our relationships are really hard even when they work, with Nijika originally being totally freaked out by Hitori and only sticking with her out of desperation. Anyone who is neurodiverse or knows someone who is can really empathise with these scenes and Hitori’s constant struggle with not knowing if she has done the socially wrong thing. Heck I still ask my partner after every social event if I was ok and did not do anything awkward. So while they may be over the top for laughs, they are still overlayed with subtly and hope we can all relate to.
disregarding joeys awful take connor saying he hates school tropes like the awkward teen mc who cant talk to girls, love triangles, etc is hilarious considering hes recent expressed enjoyment of dandadan whos mc is a super awkward teen who cant talk to girls and has a love triangle
I think the number one reason Bocchi seems exaggerated is because that's how it *feels* in the moment. Like yeah I'm nowhere near as actually bad as Bocchi but good god it feels like it's specifically calling me as a person out sometimes.
The songs are legit written by the band leaders of arguably the best/most well known JRockartists (AKFG, Kana Boon, Tricot, The Peggies), so Joey is on crack hating the music when he has legit said he likes some of these bands so much
TLDR: It took me about 10 years to get an associates degree at a community college. It took me so long to finish community college, (about 10 years, not kidding) because I would go for like a semester and stop going just freaking out at the thought of taking the required speech course. At one point I took a German class and halfway through the semester we had to introduce ourselves in German (about a page long). I ended up doing it and I literally felt like I was dying, I felt so humiliated about how nervous I was in front of the class. I dropped it right after and stopped going to college for like 2 years. I eventually went back and took interpersonal communication but I got super lucky because it was during the winter semester, which was just the month of January, so it went by pretty fast. I only had to do a quick introduction in front of the class. For the rest of the semester I didn’t have to do any more speeches because I just never went up, and he wasn’t keeping track of who went up or not, and I passed the class. I know majority of people hate public speaking classes but I hated them due to my social anxiety, and I still do. There was also times where I had to pay at cash registers since there was no self checkout, only to end up having panic attacks in my car. I’m doing way better now but I used to be a socially anxious wreck.
"No one is that awkward" I had a friend in middle school, he was in an even worse situation than Bocchi. He was overthinking EVERY SINGLE THING, he was apologizing when he texts something to me, every time he tried to make a joke he hid his face and felt ashamed. I fucking loved Bocchi because she reminded him to me. He was one of the best friends I've ever had. I wonder what is he doing rn
As someone with a relatively crippling anxiety disorder who has barely left his house in over a decade and struggles with employment, it wasnt just bocchi's reactions which I felt deeply but her struggle to improve and accept the help of her friends that really resonated personally. If it was just a gag series with an awkward person not growing just panicking I would agree it would wear on me. But its not, its a series where a person with demonstrable talent and good friends still struggles but still tries. Its one of the few series, anime or not that, I have personally resonated with not just enjoyed. (Also the music is good xP)
A lot of the cast have different types of problems tbh. Bocchi wants to have friends but social anxiety is a bitch so she couldn't make any, the OP lyrics itself tells us that. Ryo is the real antisocial, but that's not healthy and her only saving grace is Nijika making friends with her.
@@TheAdminSlayer Social anxiety is exactly why extraverts that suffer from it get drained, though, that's kinda the whole point. The way I explained it to myself(maybe not entirely accurate) is that it's not the social interaction on it's own that drains you the most, but what social anxiety brings with it, introvert or otherwise
Doesnt like bocchi but likes absurdist anime. Doesnt like tropey anime and love triangles but likes monogatari. Let's face it Joey, you just grew up. Anime you liked when you were younger, you no longer like. I bet you if Monogatari released today it wouldnt be your favourite
I mean obviously the vast majority of people with any form of social anxiety don't start spazzing out on the ground over thoughts of social interaction, I believe it's supposed to be an over exaggeration for the sake of conveying the weight of that feeling properly. It represents the amount of panic a person can find themselves in, it's just that Bocchi shows it very plainly. By the way, you NEVER insult the greatest soundtrack in all of modern anime like that ever again.
You know how people get skewed perception based on what they are exposed to? Like we've all met people who believe only kids watch animated stuff. Usually all their adult friends only watch sports and live action and their little kids watch stuff like Paw Patrol. *In the same way, you know why the vast majority of people never meet anyone like Bocchi? Because people like Bocchi don't interact with most people.* Joey definitely has skewed perception on this matter. *When I was Bocchi's age, I already had years of therapy in my bag and still couldn't read out loud from a sheet of paper on stage because I would shake so much I couldn't read the words.* *My proudest moment from my youth was when I was presenting an essay in the auditorium, mic in hand and all, and started to shake like I always do. I loudly slammed my elbow on a table next to me (some people in the front row got visibly startled) to keep the essay still in my hand and I read it all the way to the end. Got a damn good grade too.* Every introvert usually gets one or two turning points in their life before they break through. Bocchi is just the anime version of that. I honestly feel at this point Joey might know that and is only fighting for the sake of entertainment.
Given that it's Joey, I'm not sure he does. I think he just wants to hate on the show but doesn't have a good reason besides "It's new and popular," so he has to find a different reason and then double down cuz doubling down is better than admitting being wrong
@@soapsatellite Definitely. If an anime pops off and he hadn't read the manga or never mentioned it before, he'll definitely double down on it not being that big of a deal. The only times Joey has liked something new and popular is when he's mentioned the manga is really good previously. Obviously you could argue the reason he doesn't mention them from the manga is because he also thought the manga was mid, but it does add this feeling of him being some kind of manga elitist that doesn't like anything that's getting yelled at him to watch if he hadn't heard of it before because it probably isn't all that, but if he experienced it before all the yells happen, he thinks it's better. Only exceptions are really great shows that he somehow never read before, usually because they don't have a manga anyway. If he talked about mid or bad manga that he's read more often, I feel we'd get to know Joey more and have more reasons to believe why he's genuine, instead of just anime trashtalk, but I guess that won't get as many views anyway (so he probably already does it and we wouldn't know, but if he can say that level of awkward people don't exist enough to warrant Bocchi, then I can also claim he doesn't talk about mid manga enough).
Bocchi was my surprise anime of the year, my past self resonates with her so much it’s insane - had to spend over a decade growing out of social anxiety doing it through musical expression.. when Bocchi showed up I immediately fell in love with the show. Can agree may be niche but was perfect for me 😊
"No one acts like that in real life" Yeah, welcome to fiction. No one acts like any character in real life cuz they are a character. Its fine to not like it, but all of his reasoning is contrarian at best
"no one is that introverted" Tbh, it's a hard argument to fight against because it's hard to find an example, you know, because they're introverts. But if hikikomoris exist, I'd say someone that's less introverted than them at the level of Bocchi exists. For the ones that don't know: hikikomori is a word taken from the japanese term for a person that for some reason NEVER leaves their home, one of the possible reasons is being too introverted.

@@Yo_Camibro watched bocchi with his eyes closed
@@Yo_Cami The premise of her personality is immensely relatable. The exaggerated expressions are a source of comedy. If it weren't for the latter, it would just be sad and awkward.
I never said it was well-written. Bocchi's character is conceptually the worst possible case of social anxiety with spontaneous relief wherever the plot calls for it. I can totally see how people would find it unrelatable, especially those who don't have experience with social anxiety.
For people who suffer with social anxiety, her responses are familiar yet exaggerated. That's why you see so many people saying things like "She's me fr fr."
For those who don't, however, she seems like a totally unbelievable caricature. I _feel_ like that's where Joey is coming from, and he's just flat out wrong about it.

No one in real life acts like 99% of anime characters. It's fiction, of course it's not realistic.
He just can't comprehend antisocial/asocial people exist.

I'd like to think Joey is really just playing this up for the Trash Taste episode but he keeps doubling down over multiple episodes over a large course of time this discussion has taken place so it makes me worried that's not the case. I have no words anymore.
it’s honestly really disheartening :( social anxiety can get that debilitating (bocchi is exaggerated obvs but it could reflect how someone feels on the inside) and the fact that he dismisses them as non existent is so frustrating
Im not on 'cancel culture' but holy shit, he really close to deserving that
Sadly that’s Joey’s take on everything lately, I still can’t believed they had to force him twice to watch Arcane just because he was too dug in his contrarian mindset.
This is ego mixed with a lack of empathy.
He cant think introspectively
bocchi literally has a scene where the show turns into a 3d modelling software and has a 3d model of bocchi fly through some shit and thats just one example. if thats not absurdist idk what is
Pretty sure that's the first thing you'll find if you look up clips fo the show too
To be fair, I wouldn't have bat an eye if Joey just said that he didn't enjoy watching BtR and ended it there, but his reasons are just so easily disproven to be untrue that it irks me so.
K-On: You're just a cheap knock-off.
Bocchi: No, no, *I'm the upgrade.*
You mean 'downgrade'.

Bocchi the Rock music being not very good is a crazy take.

There's actually a clip of Joey saying that the music is and I quote "fucking stellar", idk what happened for him to behave like bocchi killed his family or something to shit on it so much now lmao, people were sharing that clip and clowning on him on reddit 😭

Connor and Garnt laughing at the beginning cos they know how ass joey's take is lol
I’m surprised Joey likes Jojo. No one has stands in real life but he seems to enjoy it just fine
@@Avdb033aye, Joey not complaining about the fantasy/absurd aspect on Bocchi, but her "unrealistic" introvertness

Dude must hate every single anime.
This is a great comparison honestly
I watched both shows and I never got that impression. BTR is being its own thing. K-On is also its own thing. I liked BTR's depiction of performances more.
i never really saw it as bocchi trying to be k-on. Inspired, sure, but they are still different
That's why I also can't take Joey seriously every time he calls himself 'musician'.
The normification of Joey is wild.
He is no longer The Anime Man, there is a big disconnect of his roots as a weeb.
Joey genuinely believing that antisocial people don’t exist is crazy 😅
Asocial is the word, but yeah it's just such a weird take.
@ Oh for sure, he gets a laugh out of it.
@@mauroherrera9543 Except he's the only one laughing, everybody else is laughing at him, not with him😁
It’s not that Joey thinks asocial people don’t exist, it’s that he thinks asocial people cannot be as awkward as Bocchi.
He’s wrong either way.
He legit never said that. He said not as bad as Bocchi.
I would respond as I have with a few other people, but your comment reads like AI and might not be worth much time considering

"i havent watched it"
Have you heard of hikkikomori, Joey?
I’m pretty sure that Joey hates Boochi because it’s popular.
Very much, not the first time when it comes to "Just a man"
@@alexeystarkov7504 - Oh trust me, I remember well the backlash he got for admitting that he hates YOI because it’s popular.
joey is just so freaking frustrating. it's not enough that he doesn't like BTR. it has to be "no one is like that. people like that don't exist." and like. for one thing. it's clearly an absurdist comedy and the fact that he apparently can't understand that it's played up ON PURPOSE really just makes him look like he lacks any kind of media literacy.
but also. it's so ignorant and invalidating to act as though severe, intense, and debilitating social anxiety doesn't exist. like it genuinely makes me think less of him as a person, especially since i've seen him get criticism for this take repeatedly and he refuses to adopt any kind of empathy at all. idk even if it wasn't something that personally affected me like anxiety has, that kind of stubbornness rubs me the wrong way.
ok trauma dump alert, everyone stop reading now if you don't care: i like bocchi bc yeah, sure, i'm not literally on the floor having seizures and melting through ten planes of existence or whatever, but that's what it feels like in my head when i'm panicking. idk about anyone else, but i'm one like four different medications and a decade of therapy just to *kind of* exist like a normal person. bocchi reminds me a lot of being a teenager who almost flunked out of my senior year because my anxiety was so all-encompassing that i was having meltdowns in the car and couldn't get myself to go to school. i didn't literally hide my closet, but i quit all my instrument lessons, quit all my clubs, and isolated myself entirely. i didn't have to get into a box to exist in the world, but i had to be hospitalized and medicated and therapised until my brain and i could develop the armor necessary to try.
if you're taking it literally, yeah, it's stupid. and i don't even think BTR is doing anything particularly revolutionary. but if i just cannot understand this utter invalidation. it's really frustrating. bocchi is just a silly show that resonates with some people. idk.
I unironically have had moments where I overthought a stupid situation like Bocchi. Socially inept people do exist.

Just Contrarian stuff. Disliking Bocchi anime is fine but saying that about antisocial people and talking bad about the music just shows he just does it to hate. Especially coming from the fact this guy has hobbies in music and still decides to talk shit about the music. Joey just lives inside his own head, he doesn't witness the world around him.

I actually thought Bocchi WAS more real than Joey says. Getting really good at guitar wasn't going to fix her problem of not having friends, especially with crippling anxiety. I didn't think the point was to be funny, alone, but relatable. There are tons of people with social anxiety, Japan being the prime example.

Oh gee an extrovert not understanding introvert woes.
TOTALLY never seen that happen before
"No one is that awkward"
I had a friend in middle school, he was in an even worse situation than Bocchi.

I live ProZD, just started the podcast swinging a haymaker 😂
Looks at my heavily socially axious near agoraphobic ass in the mirror then looks at Joey. Guess I don't exist.
Bocchi isn’t even an introvert, Ryou is the introvert, Bocchi is an Extrovert with crippling social anxiety stopping her from being extroverted
A lot of the cast have different types of problems tbh. Bocchi wants to have friends but social anxiety is a bitch so she couldn't make any, the OP lyrics itself tells us that. Ryo is the real antisocial, but that's not healthy and her only saving grace is Nijika making friends with her.
Introversion/extroversion is about social energy. Bocchi was wiped out after that MVP performance in episode 8, there's no way she's an extrovert.
didya watch Rocchi the Bock xd
Bocchis "exaggerations" are just NORMAL LIFE for me
I mean obviously the vast majority of people with any form of social anxiety don't start spazzing out on the ground over thoughts of social interaction, I believe it's supposed to be an over exaggeration for the sake of conveying the weight of that feeling properly. It represents the amount of panic a person can find themselves in, it's just that Bocchi shows it very plainly.
By the way, you NEVER insult the greatest soundtrack in all of modern anime like that ever again.
Joey keeps digging his own grave by sticking to this take
I guess Joey’s dying on the hill by himself
Joey thinks he knows introverts. That's funny
"BTR is exagerrated, no one acts like that"
Meanwhile literally Bocchi's Live Stage actress behaves exactly like that in front of Bocchi's VA.
Japan literally has hikikomori problem... Nobody act like that
You know how people get skewed perception based on what they are exposed to?
Like we've all met people who believe only kids watch animated stuff. Usually all their adult friends only watch sports and live action and their little kids watch stuff like Paw Patrol.
*In the same way, you know why the vast majority of people never meet anyone like Bocchi? Because people like Bocchi don't interact with most people.*
Joey definitely has skewed perception on this matter. *When I was Bocchi's age, I already had years of therapy in my bag and still couldn't read out loud from a sheet of paper on stage because I would shake so much I couldn't read the words.*
*My proudest moment from my youth was when I was presenting an essay in the auditorium, mic in hand and all, and started to shake like I always do. I loudly slammed my elbow on a table next to me (some people in the front row got visibly startled) to keep the essay still in my hand and I read it all the way to the end. Got a damn good grade too.*
Every introvert usually gets one or two turning points in their life before they break through.
Joey "The most ignorant man ever" Animeman
"no one is that introverted"
Tbh, it's a hard argument to fight against because it's hard to find an example, you know, because they're introverts.
But if hikikomoris exist, I'd say someone that's less introverted than them at the level of Bocchi exists.
For the ones that don't know: hikikomori is a word taken from the japanese term for a person that for some reason NEVER leaves their home, one of the possible reasons is being too introverted.
Joey actually acoustic and regarded, don't value any of his takes, dude just wants to hate to hate smh
