Liberty Devitto, Kenny Aranoff and Max Weinberg are probably 3 of the very best and most underrated drummers in the industry, truly a great and inspirational musician
Liberty worked on an original project of mine last year, and he approached it exactly this way. He is a songwriter's drummer, and there aren't many of those out there. He is the best in the world at what he does and is one serious professional.
@@xibbit6322 I think he means before the groovy cats of Topper joined Joel. When he did live tours before Turnstiles came out, Rhys Clark was his drummer back then. He wasn't really bad, it's just... pretty simplistic. Billy Joel always sounded better live than the records imo
I had the pleasure of spending time with him in the early 80's. He tuned my tama set in my apartment. The neighbors were coming out of the woodwork! Bob
I love everyone on here critiquing his style and saying how he has/had potential... He really didn't accomplish much. Just played on some of the greatest records ever with one of the greatest singer/songwriters ever. I'm sure most of you have played with Dylan, the Beatles the Rolling Stones though so Billy Joel isn't that big of a name to you.
+tannerslomko What are you talking about? Read up, this dude changed many of the songs drastically because his enthusiastic drums. The current drummer can't hold a candle to him.
I think he's being sarcastic. I agree, Billy's band has not been the same without him. It's amazing how replacing a key ingredient can mess-up the mix.
Can't wait to read Liberty's new book about his career making music with Billy...and his take on what went wrong in their personal and professional relationship. Nice to see Billy agreed to write the Forward of the book...hopefully they can bury the hatchet and some day return on stage together if possible.
I just finished his book. I actually listened to the audiobook and I'm glad I did because he added a bunch of random "notes" that aren't in the book! It's a really good book!
Anyone who says Liberty isn't a versatile drummer and is just a basher isn't paying attention to his work over 30 years with Billy Joel. Yes, he may not be able to fit in with a true jazz band or a metal band, but he covered styles from rock, reggae, latin, ballads and more with Billy. He's a hard hitting drummer, but that's what Billy wanted. He also can be dynamic and come down and be soft when the music needs it and then explode with intensity. You can't judge the man by these videos of him doing clinics because honestly as a drummer he's so much more and he got a raw deal from Billy. But what can you expect from a man who eventually fired everyone in his band and hasn't written a decent song since?
This guy is never mentioned as a wonderful drummer. It's always John Bonham,Keith Moon, Ginger Baker, Jim Gordon, Ringo Starr. But, Liberty is a wonderful extremely talented Drummer. God Bless Liberty.
Yes, but out of this angriness he invented a kind of drumming, that is unreached to this day. He never was some kind of a basher, he understood the concept of balance. His style is a form of art, not quiet as easy as it may seem. He is one of the best.
Billy did him sooooo wrong. Topper (the original band of liberty) became billys band, they stuck with him for 30 years, he gets an ego, and drops the guys that help make him.
Chuck Burgi is a very good drummer been playing for like 50 years but Billy really fucked up letting Liberty go. Liberty is the most dynamic drummer ever and its really missed on Billy's stage. Just not the same.
So what’s he doing these days?? Still giving clinics to talk about the drumming he did on records 35 years ago?? I always thought he was a great drummer. By the way.......where the hell is Billy Joel??
My Lord those toms sound awful and those drum fills are absolutely slopp-tastic. All this in addition to a complete Stewart Copeland beat rip-off is just awful.

You speak truth!!
Mighty Max!!
Underrated, how?? They are and have been playing with the best most of their carreers.
A tip : you can watch series on flixzone. I've been using them for watching a lot of movies during the lockdown.
@Nikolas Evan Yea, I have been watching on Flixzone for since december myself :D

Sure a privilege to work with him. What a one of a kind drummer. Love him.
Liberty was Billy Joel's right-hand man for 30+ years. After he left, I never looked at Billy the same way again.
SparkDalmatian Chuck Burgi is pretty darn good,! If you listen to some old billy Joel back in 70s the live bootlegs, the drumming was not that good!
@@nechemia2011 Songs in the Attic had some pretty fantastic drumming

I mean, Billy's on his fourth wife. Is it any surprise he's on his second drummer?
100% agree.
I love how Police-y this tune is. Devitto is a god

Awesome drummer-and he knows what he is talking about

MrTeddyBass totally. Listen to the new band play uptown girl, the drums sound like a computer and the swagger is gone!
This is "Running on Ice" by Billy Joel !
Love Liberty. Like to catch one of his clinics. Great drummer.

Liberty understands life well, life is not about the money you make, it is about the love you give. I feel sorry for Billy with all his millions.
Wayne's world!
Wayne's world!
PartyTime! Exceelent!
Liberty is the reason why I play my left hand stick with the butt end! The feel and power makes me play better.

I don't think anyone's ever said such a thing
Chad Smith reminds me of him in the way they hit.

Great drummer and good guy, anyone else notice the drumstifk in his left hand is backwards... XXDDD
@6:12 Love it.
You really compare Bozzio at this guy..... woaw....lol
Musta been hard to mic him in the studio. Goddamn he hits hard. I do love his energetic style tho.
The best!

The drum set they gave him is a crap . . . .
Snare sounds great. Those toms need some work.

he sets up (the kit) different than he used to
Still waiting for the explosions, those are just simple 1/2 bar fills.

Yeah..but different phase of life for billy..more nostalgia..I'll watch the old band dvd for real deal

I agree with the great drummer part. Who cares where BJ is? I'm here to see Liberty!
This was just ummmm, annoying. Not sure what Billy Joel saw in this clown, but whatever. I guess you can't argue with success.
You must be kidding, right?
