  • Drawbridge opening - Hoornbrug Delftsche Vaart - Delftse Vliet
This single-sided, large drawbridge (actually a bascule bridge, as the Dutch call them) is in active use. Here we see the drawbridge raise for a container ship with trash. Then we see it close. There also is a tram waiting for the drawbridge to close. This drawbridge is on a major canal and waterway, linking Delft with The Hague and beyond.
“The Hoornbrug is a bascule bridge (one pivot point and a drawbridge has two) over the Delftsche Vliet, part of the Rijn-Schie canal, in Rijswijk near the border with The Hague. The bridge is used intensively as an access artery for Rijswijk and The Hague because the route Laan van Delfvliet - Laan van Hoornwijck - Hoornbrug - Haagweg is an extension of the Rijksweg A13 where one leaves the highway at the Ypenburg junction. There is also an exit from the A4. The bridge is also used by tram lines 1 and 15 in The Hague.
The bridge is operated and managed by the Province of South Holland.
    History
Probably a bridge was located on the site of the current bridge as early as the 12th century, as part of the Vliet was dug at that time. The first mention of the "Hoornbrugge" dates back to 1340. It is also known that in 1394 the bridge was provided with ramps and exits. The bridge takes its name from the corner between the Delftsche Vliet and the Vliet, the old Dutch horne or hornic.”

Amazing that this bridge has been there since at least 1340! That is truly an ancient roadway and bridge. Well, at least it’s location. The bridge was much different in the 12th century! What is neat though, is that. The Vliet waterway or canal, looks to have largely stayed the same.
