🚨 disclaimer. It was mentioned in the comments that having an outlet in a high moisture environment like a cabinet can cause rust and component issues. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK and be sure to do your own research. I don't plan on having my cabinet in super high humidity. Articles that I've read mentioned anything between 40 to 70% humidity will be okay for electrical outlets. I'll be honest and can't believe I overlooked this issue... I got too excited about showing this product and how cool it is to overlook the humidity issue. 😂 If it ends up not working out then I can easily swap it out for the grommet style cord system. Thanks for watching and thanks for leaving feedback. That is one thing that I love about reading. All the comments is I learn from you as well!
We have two milsbo tall ikea cabinets and they set at high 80s in humidity and we haven't had electrical problems in over a year. We have the cords out of the bottom. But now I won't grow another way I love them! 😊
It can't be worse than my micro ISB on my mini humidifier who rust slowly after few months... Although, I love those they're small and perfect in tiny spaces!
Great video. This would genuinely help my other cabinet based hobbies, such as uranium glass. Now I know what sort of drill bits can be used to get cables inside for lighting!
Hi Jeff! I used to run a small humidifier inside the cabinet, but after weather stripping the gaps and putting in a bunch of plants I find that just the normal cycle of the plants being watered and drying out is enough to keep the humidity at 50-65%.
I drilled a hole in the top back panel. Figured out the largest hole I needed to feed through cables and used a grommet so the wires didn’t rub on the sharp metal edges. Took it to my drill press and put wood under it for stability. Jeff, your drilling of your 2”? Hole seemed to go very well but have seen other struggle. I run my electrics down the back out of sight because of the solid back. I use those shelves too. They work well!
That's a good method as well... To run the cords out the top. That's the nice thing about seeing everyone's project is how differently they set it up. I've already taken some heat in the comments about my outlets being inside the cabinet. Now I definitely understand the concerns for this, but I don't plan on mine being extremely humid so the point where there's condensation on the glass. I think I might have to make a short follow-up video explaining the importance of not using electrical outlets in high humidity lol
A great looking cabinet Jeff and a nice job setting it up. One issue I would foresee is that electrical components that aren't enclosed will rust and arc very quickly in the high humidity of a grow cabinet. Also you will have open ports that are not in use, have you thought about the danger of potentially dripping water into those, not just from your watering but also Transpiration?
Hello. I won't be keeping the green house super high and it's looks like as long as it's 70% or lower then it should be okay. I will have to try and find a cover to place over top of it for the transpiration like you mentioned. Another thing I read online about outlets is that as long as there isn't condensation on the glass then there shouldn't be an issue. I'll be honest... I think I got too excited about the convenience of this type of plug to not realize that moisture might be an issue. If it doesn't work out like I expect then I can easily switch it to the grommet style.
🎉🎉🎉Great Job!!!! I love the solid metal back and magnetic shelves😍🤩😍🤩!!! My gf has the peg board back and during a huge pest outbreak, I found mealies and mites in the holes😠. We weather stripped her cabinet for pest reasons. The humidity goes up without it after plants are thoroughly watered.💓. Great video 💖
This is fantastic. I've been REALLY wanting a closing cabinet like this. Especially because Iv been an outdoor gardener for the most part and only recently getting into house plants. The few houseplants I've had in the past, I've been fine letting them go a bit dormant in growth through the winter. Now that have many more plants (not too many.....yet lol) I've been trying to figure out what to do for the winter. This would be perfect. Unfortunately I don't have the space for it (or the $) at the moment so I'm planning on setting up my laundry room with a bunch of grow lights, space heater, humidity, etc. The biggest problem though is that I can't see them through the day! This would be SO perfect. I can't wait to see updates on changes you make over time. I've seen some beautiful cabinets set up with lots of moss and plants that turn out looking like a tiny piece of rain forest.
Awesome. Wondering the fc that grow light is giving out. I have two barrilla lights and I don’t think is enough to reach good light to the bottom of my cabinet. I also used electrical tape on the outside of the gaps to keep humidity in. I found the weather strip kept coming off due to humidity.
I completely forgot to add this into the video.... I did film a section that had the foot candles but for some reason I didn't see it in editing and honestly forgot about it. I will be making another video soon with this information
Loved this! I love the magnetic shelves, I feel like it gives you more range to display your beautiful plants! I’ve heard mixed reviews on the weather strips, some people say it’s good to leave it for natural airflow as it helps with root rot but then others say it’s better so it helps with humidity Looks great! Really enjoyed seeing how you put it all together
Been watching on the Apple TV so haven’t been commenting but TFS. I was wondering when you would cave lol. I got a Milsbo wide (white) in 2020. Love love love it. With enough plants my humidity is between 50-80% winter - summer. I didn’t weather strip.
I can't say if I prefer the cabinet or the ASMR with the paper and the sharpie 😅 Really awesome project! I'm thinking about one, but I don't know where to put it haha
Looks great! I actually got the Milsbo and the Rudsta this week but haven’t assembled the Rudsta. I don’t want to drill holes so I’m hoping the gaps are wide enough on both to run the cords through.
I have a milsbo wide. I have two barrinas t5 at top. At back of milsbo there’s a hole but it’s not large enough for the light cord so a few options, widen that hole or cut and rewire the light cable (this is what hubby did for me). No need to drill hole at base. Also, you don’t really need fans or other power pieces. My cabinet is not weather sealed and in terms of ventilation, I open up cabinet a few hours a week and have not had any issues. At beginning I did have two small fans that I run cord through gaps of doors but at the end I just took out.
Thanks for the vid. Was wondering if that cabinet has shelving that spans the width as well, or is it without shelves? Those magnetic shelves are genius though. Cheers.
There's a gap at the top of the Rudsta that you can feed wires thru if you feed them thru before you put the screws in and top on. That's what I did with mine because I didn't want to put a hole in it. I didn't need a humidifier. Mine stays above 80 in summer in winter it was 50 ish. I have my fans set to go off for 10 minutes every 5 hours. So far so good.v
@@EverythingPlants yes. It's not a hole really, there's just a gap between the top of the glass and the bar that runs width wise. Just big enough for the cords to fit but not the plug part so you have to set up the wires first. If you remove the lid then unscrew the bar the runs from front to back on either side lift it place the wires thru and close it up. No holes needed. The wires have to run up to the top tho and out the side. Some may not like that look. I have 1 of the magnet spice racks on the back to hold the extension cords up high. I watched someone here on TH-cam do it unfortunately it was a year ago and I can't remember who it was. Maybe good growing. Not sure.
I like the way you do videos, simple & direct. I've used hole saws on wood but never on metal, so appreciate that, too. I've wanted the "fabrik" (I think that's how it's spelled, not sure) to make a greenhouse from, I really like the retro look of them. They're not a big as the rudsta but I just want it more as a display than a serious greenhouse, probably for ferns.
I love the excitement! These builds are fun. I built one last year, didnt do the hole for cables but i do also have those magnetic shelves! Im thinking of doing a Milsbo Tall so I can put taller plants. Im nkt willing to part with the $299 price tag just yet
Wow, that looks great! We’re all excited for you. 😂 On a side note, got my pH test indicator today. I tested a few sources and the distilled water from the store is in the optimal range. I will get the pH down for my filtered tap water. Thank you so much for these tips.
The cabinet looks great and a really good video for hints and tips. I am curious to know why you bought it (what you hope the benefits to the plants will be or was it aesthetics to frame the plants), either way would be useful to know the aims and then as the updates come along, to see where it meets expectations or changes as time goes by.
Very interesting question.... I have wanted a cabinet for a long time and now that I have one I am not 100% sure of its purpose yet. One angle I'm leaning to is using it for my anthuriums. As I continue to gain more of these plants, I would like them to be a little bit more protected from the rest of my collection.... Not that they are inferior to the anthurium, but maybe to see if I can keep a more consistent humidity specifically through our dry winters. As of right now that is the direction that I am leaning towards. What are your thoughts?
Maybe it will be better to use safety plugs on the open outlet parts to keep them from high humidity at least a bit? And i think you don`t need pebbles or perlite in the water tray to raise humidity, they are used only to keep a pot with plant out of sitting in water, just water will be fine and will still evaporate
Thanks for watching. I don't know how I overlooked the humidity issue with electrical outlets.... But I don't plan on keeping my cabinet in super high humidity. I made a disclaimer comment that addresses this issue. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I also should have mentioned that I do plan on placing a plant on pebble tray.... But you are correct. You technically don't need pebbles for humidity lol
Yeah so far I have not added it onto the cabinet. I did add a little container of water near the fan to circulate and increase the humidity. So far it's maintaining between 50 and 70%. So I'll keep an eye on it.
I'm assuming you're talking about the electrical cord outlet?.... Yeah I'm not worried about humidity or anything with that, but of course you need to maintain caution
I have had my rudsta for less then a year but three of my plants have now grown so big they are nearly touching the light on underside of top shelf, I want milsbo cabinet but not allowed to get one 😢😢
Um, I certainly would not want an electrical outlet on the floor of a cabinet where you are watering plants. I suggest you place it on the back of the unit above the bottom and include a GFCI connection for any water or humidity.

Sweet! I got the drill bit from Amazon
Excellent job! Been wanting to do this for ages but Mrs Sheffield won't allow it ☹
Just tell her you need to keep up with the content.....🤣
This was interesting. I don’t have any kind of a greenhouse but you made it look so easy. I feel I could do it.
It was a pretty easy build....making the hole felt a bit sketchy and installing the top took like 30 seconds to figure out haha
Same.. I get a bit intimidated by wanting to have one but I really need one for a load of small plants I have.
You made the drilling look so easy! I’ve been too nervous to drill mine. Your cabinet looks great - I think you will really enjoy it.
It would have been a disaster if I tried the wood specific drill bit....I've seen some of those before
Hi Jeff! I used to run a small humidifier inside the cabinet, but after weather stripping the gaps and putting in a bunch of plants I find that just the normal cycle of the plants being watered and drying out is enough to keep the humidity at 50-65%.

I think they might actually have a white Rudsta cabinet... I'm actually not too sure
That’s so cool, I didn’t know you had an Amazon store, will definitely use it when I buy something that I can use it to do so

As you add plants, the humidity should increase without the need of a humidifier 😊
And it does! Thanks 👍
