As a child, I grew up listening to Brenda Fassie's track on our CD player. My Dad would play her CD plate every other Saturday because he enjoyed watching mei mimick her and singing gibberish (didn't know the lyrics). I was so in love with this lady that I dreamt of becoming a singer. Even as a teen I'd mention her as my role model. Broke my heart when I heard she passed away, I had no idea until years later. I'm a Nigerian and even though I never knew the actual lyrics of most of her songs, I loved them: listening to them now again still makes me smile.. I'm a Hausa from Nigeria. I can't understand what she sings but the Melody is sooo sweet and universal!
As a child, I grew up listening to Brenda Fassie's track on our CD player. My Dad would play her CD plate every other Saturday because he enjoyed watching mei mimick her and singing gibberish (didn't know the lyrics). I was so in love with this lady that I dreamt of becoming a singer. Even as a teen I'd mention her as my role model. Broke my heart when I heard she passed away, I had no idea until years later.
I'm a Nigerian and even though I never knew the actual lyrics of most of her songs, I loved them: listening to them now again still makes me smile.. Brenda Fassie was simple iconic, it's sad she didn't live long enough to enjoy her legacy but she'll always be in my heart.
