Not really. In the book, the Navigators are just that: navigators. They calculate the trajectory of the heighliners which are propelled by the Holtzman generator. The generator is folding space, not the Navigators.
@@Xerxes2005 Exactly, how are people who have not read the book, going to understand that. I know the Holtzman Folds space, and the Steersman guides its path. But on the 2021 film, It shows them as a Tunnel, which is not accurate at all. They travel a route from system to system, and some ships dock, till they reach their stop. @weaponizedaesthetics4677 It's really interesting to read all the reactions to the 1984 version, etiher you absolutely love it or you can't stand it. For me the costumes are one of the major reason I dislike it. I just can't take the Harkonnens seriously, they looks so goofy and campy to me.
And he did a fantastic job of it too! Since so much of the action will still be focused on Arrakis in Part 2, Rabban will get more to do, even though he ends up being more minor of a character in the movement of the story than his visage would suggest. Truly, he would get so much more screen time in a prequel series set just before the events of book 1 that centered on the occupation of Dune by the Harrkonens.
Its entirely because of part 2. In the book, Bautista's character is actually 2 different ones, but it doesn't matter. In the part of the book which will encompass part 2, there's TWO epic knife fights which Feyd-Rautha(Rabban) fights in, and it we're gonna get Bautista to portray at least one of them, if they don't get the time to do both.
@@jonl7855 You're mistaken. While Feyd was absent from Part One, Villeneuve said that was a deliberate choice. He's now been cast in Part Two with Austin Butler playing him, so his knife fights will still be his, not shifted to Rabban.
I love Dune but can we talk about how people in the imperial bureaucracy were supposed to just casually cooperate with a dude called “the Beast Rabban”
I'd say that isn't fair, but 84 did a better job of showing the slow blade entering the shield. The new version, especially when there was the real battle scenes, showed red even when the blades were fast. It looked all wrong.
He changed the story a lot and added elements that were not in the book. I just re-read Dune, it's one of my top favorite books. I actually have been thinking of writing a paper on the differences from Lynch's Screenplay and Frank Herbert's text. The talk Leto and Paul have before leaving Caladan is beautiful, but not in the book's text. It adds to the movie splendidly. "I'll miss the sea, but a person needs new experiences. They jar something deep inside, allowing them to grow. Without change, something sleeps inside us, and seldom awakens. The Sleeper Must Awaken". The heart plugs are Lynch's creation, they are such a vile and disturbing yet perfect addition. The Barron's skin disease and the fact that he flies in his suspensors (vs them just helping support him) are Lynch's additions. In the book, Paul asks about the mice that hop in the desert and what they're called. That's how he gets the name Muad'Dib. In Lynch's film, he asks "what the mouse shadow on the second moon" is called. I love that the Reverend Mothers are bald. There is no mention of "folding space" in the book but it fits perfectly. There is no mention of Guildsmen living in Spice tanks or being disfigured until Dune Messiah. It is a perfectly Lynchian creation! The utterly vile looking, alien Guildsmen in his movie! The casting is Amazing and poignant. In the book, Chani says, "tell me of the waters of your homeworld, Usul". Movie: tell me of your homeworld, Usul. Frank Herbert writes of "the Weirding Way" in the book, but never extrapolates on it. Hence, there are no "weirding modules" in the text. Lynch's addition of weirding modules is genius. I could go on. In conclusion, Lynch's movie Dune from 1984 is delightful, ingenious and one of my top 10 favorite movies. It showcases the brilliance of his creativeness. I prefer it to his other films, since I am such a fan of the Dune series. But Twin Peaks and FWWM are also my Lynchian favorites. Don't diss Lynch's Dune without giving it a good go and I highly recommend reading the Dune Series! Father, The Sleeper Has Awakened! Also, think of the cinematic technology of the 80s. There was no CGI in 1984 and I think the special effects were groundbreaking. If only Jodorowsky had finished his version!!!
There is no denying what a technical achivement the '84 version is. Even much of the casting was great. And the main theme and score are pretty damn good, too.

Love love love the 2021 version, but will always have a soft spot for David Lynch's version. I know it was not what he had envisioned, but still always worth a look.
I haven't seen either of these versions, only the miniseries starring William Hurt as Duke Atreides. How does it compare to these?
@EmpiricalPragmatist you're only about 5 or 6 hours from having your answer! 😉. But on a serious note, i think the miniseries went into more depth on everything but i dont remember them well and thats really saying something itself. The movies take you somewhere you won't forget anytime soon
Within the constraints he had to work in,lynch did an amazing job.
Wow great edit! Makes me think Lynch's was better than I remember.
It was a fresh take on sci-fi at the time with all the Star Wars and Star Track popularity.
David Lynch created an imperfect classic film.
lynch did not edit the original. he filmed it, then the studio spat in his face and gave it to someone else to edit. he was so angry at this that he asked to remove his name from it entirely.

Agreed. The feel of Lynchs is so different to the new ones. Love them all but Lynch's one still tops my list
1984 Stillsuits looked awesome. And It had it all explained and shown, like Navigators and the Emperor. The Highliners worked like in the book.
Yeah one thing I wish they went over in Dune ‘21-24 is how the heighliners work
Loading and unloading is then done, before the it travels to the next system.
Unless they are hired for a specific job like forces movement etc.
They would not have a High liner in 2 systems at once.
@@carljhirst They are seen moving though, so it's hard to see them simply as portals. And the Navigators are still said to be searching a safe path. Anyhow, my main problem with Villeneuve's movie about the Spacing Guild is that they don't seem involved enough. We're suppose to see them at the end of the movie, since Paul needs their support if he wants to launch his Jihad. If the Guild does not recognize him, how could Paul send his troops to fight rebel houses? And yet, we see them leaving right away...
@@Xerxes2005 The Prequel Books were awesome. Shows Guerny going around some of his old smuggler friends to find spice stores on board their ships.
This was to help a poisoned Steersman in his tank, so they could get back to the Imperium Space.
Also had the New High liners being built in a giant hanger on Ix. Leto watched them bring in the Navigator to Fold it out of the hanger.
2 Brothers from Ix, 1 became a Navigator, the other stayed on Ix to fight the Tleilaxu, who were trying to make a New spice in Axolotl tanks ( Tleilaxu Womens mutant Wombs. Or any Woman in fact. As they captured a Bene woman and she managed to make some super spice mix that flipped their top scientist out).
I'd love to see him do those prequels. That explain a lot in detail. We can only hope.
He should've shown a Steersman at least.

David Lynch was one of the greatest artists of several generations and he gave everything he had on Dune and did it well. I remember my parents and my friends parents watching this when it came out on vhs and it was way more influential than any of the contemporary crap we see now!!
I would watch a modern edit of Lynch's dune. I love the aesthetic of the movie. Imagine what he could have done with midern tools.
imagine if he had been allowed to edit the original 1984 movie in the first place.
he filmed it then they gave it to someone else to edit. total disrespect to a great director.
Or even to not stratch a book like dune in a single movie.
The theatrical cut is sadly the ONY official Lynch approved cut even if he could not make it himself. He felt the 3 hour TV Cut was absolutely horrible and refused to have his name in the titles, hence the TV cut says "Directed by Alan Smithee". I would LOVE to see how an actual Directors Cut by David Lynch would look like if he would be given the chance but to this day he still refuses to touch Dune again. They really broke him with it back then. But i think it's important for him to find his peace with it and face it once more to ACTUALLY finally have HIS version.
@@KRAFTWERK2K6 He has said many times there is no "his" version. The film he shot was predicated on that 2.5 hour limit. There is more "stuff" but there is no significantly longer film that embodies his full vision because he never shot it.

@weaponizedaesthetics4677
It's really interesting to read all the reactions to the 1984 version, etiher you absolutely love it or you can't stand it.
For me the costumes are one of the major reason I dislike it. I just can't take the Harkonnens seriously, they looks so goofy and campy to me.
I still don't get over the fact they casted Dave Bautista, gave him like three lines and let him just kinda walk around and look around angrily. 😂
That's the character, though. He's a mindless brute, but the baron has uses for even such people in his plans
Feyd is in part 2, played by Austin Butler@@jonl7855

Hah, Nice line - will work that in my full length video
David Lynch's version is a masterpiece.
Exactement!
Nop
The absolute SMUG on that Harkonnen is almost intoxicating! 🤣 Dude loves what he does and it shows!
Honestly, they're both amazing.
There is no denying what a technical achivement the '84 version is. Even much of the casting was great. And the main theme and score are pretty damn good, too.
I appreciate that she puts the emphasis on the first syllable of the name. Since the name's derived from Härkönen, a Finnish surname derived from our word for "bull"
Yes but the writer of the Dune Frank Herbert thought the name was russian,,,,
there is not a single character that the new dune has a better actor for. 84 Dune is better in every single way.
I like the 84 movie. It's always been a guilty pleasure of mine. In fact in some ways it captures the books better than the new one (in how it looks for example)
