You're correct kitambo hapa kenye there was a genre called genge and the youth brought it back now known as gengetone
That Genre was known as Genge most common with Calif Records; one of the two big production houses back in the early 2000s ; the other one being Ogopa Deejays which had the likes of E-Sir, Nameless, Redsan and Nyashinski (Kleptomaniax). The genre for Ogopa Deejays used to be called Kapuka and there was a lot of beef/competition between the two back in the day. You also mentioned Jua Cali . They were the pioneers of that Genge Genre together with Nonini and the producer known as Clemmo who now distributes music on TH-cam using Ngomma. So when you see that label Ngomma that is Clemmo's work. Gengetone is just an evolution of Genge with a bit of ragga/reggaetone flavour.
Just to add mostly the competition was mainly because Genge was street/ghetto music hence it had a lot of bangers; just like Gengetone is today ;Kapuka was mostly associated with musicians from Nairobi-West which is a middle class area in Nairobi. Though artists like Redsan sang Ragga and Jose Chameleone was also signed with Ogopa at some point.
