      She means ifa is a small aspect of what voodoo is. Voodoo has its roots in ifa but also in Native American religion and others.

      Olufemi Yusuf Haitian voodoo is different though similar to traditional African vodoun. Voodoo, Santeria, and New Orleans voodoo are branches from the same tree.
      She’s not wrong. You are misinterpreting what she’s saying

    • @WTKB82
      @WTKB82 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Olufemi Yusuf that’s what I just said. They are all branches stemming from the same tree. Distinct in their beliefs and practices but also similar in those same things. They aren’t the same. One comes from the other. It’s like comparing Christians and Catholics. Similar beliefs. Similar practices. Belief in the same god. But still two different religions.

    Aboru boye my dear sister. I respect your boldness and knowledge. I am an IFA devote and i respect others faith, while many people look down and judge me because of my own faith. You know something? I don't care about them, because many of them do come to me for help and food. I believe and respect their own faith and bible said "Thou shall not judge" can you imagine people with little or no knowledge of their own religion condemning others.May God Almighty God open our eyes to see the truth and know what is right. If you are a Christian, Muslim, Buddhist and any thing else, i will respect you and respect your faith, dont look down on me.

      I agree. People must remember that Yurobaland was huge. Benin/Togo were Voudon and there cousins Ifa, and that is a reason for so many similarities of the two religions. In the Diaspora, many names were created out of survival. Some of us did not know about Orishas, but are aware of other practices that are not apart of Voudun or Ifa. Not all Creoles from Louisiana are of Haitian blood. My family are not Haitian. Cool video 😎

      I agree. I am married to my husband From the Yoruba tribe in Oya Africa. Now initiated myself, I can’t speak on the secrets but babbbbygirl, you’re very much mounted.. I will say this, IFA is a spirit himself, I will say that voodoo comes from Benin 🇧🇯 Africa, back to mounted I will give you this ... when being initiated in Ogun you’re actually shoot with a gun with real bullets ... when mounted by Ogun and protected nothing can kill you .... until you go to Africa and study 📖 I mean really know your stuff you cannot speak about IFA. Yoruba is way more powerful due to the Orisa being born from god. LWA is not born from good. Its born of other spirits... All systems come from its mother Benin 🇧🇯 Africa. Voodoo are the spirits of the dead 💀 Lwa / ... Voodoo isn’t a complex system. IFA is very Complex, Supernatural, Mysteries that one Human will never understand even if you’re a high priest at 80yrs old. IFA is always teaching you . ... again, Voodoo comes from Benin 🇧🇯 it’s birth is from its mother land later on evolved to what is known as voodoo due to slaves settling in different parts in the world .. mostly the Caribbean & in the Southern states . I respect ✊ your opinion I respect ✊ the system Voodoo. I’m very familiar with Erzulie dantor. Powerful Lwa / but another side of Oya. Oya is the mother of the dead / Sango is the King of Lwa, he was born from the Benin 🇧🇯 king dome.. later crossed over to Yoruba by Osun. His temperament was violent and wanted to kill Osun Is the only Orisa that can calm him .... he later married Osun.... I say this to say that if you know the Orisa they can be very dangerous & known for killing as well, Sango & Ogun being two of them.... They can also bless you very much as well .... Also, babygirl they dooooooooo not come to you in dream form ohhhhh that is very fake & false., Sango has shown himself to my husband twice in his life in Africa., He is nothing of what is painted on candles, and Alters, very Strong 💪🏽 Orisa very dangerous!! I myself have never seen him .. but I was blessed to be mounted by Oya!! It was a feeling that will always be in my soul deep in my heat I will die with having the grace to be mounted by OYA!! Ase!!!

    • @januaryb4

      Most of the Orisa was born from God. But some did come from the Benin kingdom.. later on becoming Orisa!! So some are very dangerous..

      Jan’s I love and respect the knowledge you are sharing . YES a part of voodoo ( vodun) comes from the spirits of the dead . This is not a bad thing . This is actually the best thing in voodoo and what makes it as equal as ifa ( note: I didn’t say more powerful because there is no ego among angels)what is the dead? Your ancestors , the ones who made a path , a way a continuum of your existence and gave you LIFE. From the silence of death was born the noise of life and love . Voodoo comes from God as well . Who created life and death? :) WE LOVE AND WE HATE. But our motto, lifestyle and goal on this earth is to spread HARMONY ( acceptance of all and in all sincerity) but depending on how you come at us , you will be dealt with. This is why we always greet each other by “ONE RESPE” Honor and Respect when we interact with anyone

  • @gradientsea

    Possession is an important part of most West African derived religions. In fact, the concept comes from Orisha worshipers. Possession is not exclusive to voodoo. It owes the practice to traditions like Ifa. The voodoo deities are essentially the orisha adapted to the needs and history of the Haitian people. Much like Cuban Santeria. I hope you are aware of this but the Orisha come from the Ifa tradition of West Africa and Yoruba land. Also, though one can draw connections between the Egyptian pantheon and Loa or Orisha, it does not mean they are derived from them. Now, in the case of traditions like voodoo where syncretism plays a major role in its practice and manifestation, it's not wrong to incorporate a variety of symbols from other systems and faiths, but the Loa and Orisha ARE NOT those deities. The Loa and Orisha have very terrestrial origins and were elevated (I realize this is somewhat overly simplified, but I'll keep it like this for the sake of brevity.) The Egyptian deities did not begin as mortal humans. They are not the same.

      gradientsea Amen hahaha Ase waa modupe for this comment. Theres levels to this. I feel like Vodou is like Mixed Martial arts. I respect and Love it.....BUT people who arent DEEP into each tradition and DONT know the levels of power in each should really understand that they LACK a lot of necessary information that makes that system just as powerful as any other, IF each is practice correctly. Its not soo Much the system BUT the PERSON using the system and mastering it!

      @proverbalizer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your first and second sentences don't really add up. Possession is a common practice in almost all African spiritual practices including Òrìsà...but how does that lead to the conclusion that the concept itself originated from Òrìsà devotees? Also, Haitian Voudun does indeed recognize Yoruba Orisas, but also many other dieties from many different regions/people's/cultures of Africa including Dahomey, Mande, Kongo, Igbo etc. etc.

    • @proverbalizer
      @proverbalizer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The word "Vodun" itself comes from the Fon and Ewe people of Dahomey/Benin Republic/Togo... Not from Yorubaland at all. Although the concepts of Vodun and Òrìṣà are very similar... If you translate the word "Òrìsà" from Yoruba to Fon, the best option would probably be "Vodun" and if you translate the word "Vodun" from Ewe to Yoruba the best option would probably be "Òrìsà", and if you translate either into Haitian Creole they would call them "lwa", however Yoruba derived lwa in Haitian Voudun are called "Nago" and you also have many different categories of Lwa such as gede and petwo etc.

    • @proverbalizer
      @proverbalizer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, some Òrìṣà had terrestrial origins, but definitely no all. Èṣù, Ògún, Ọbàtálá etc. are all irúnmolè who are believed to have existed before humans and ancestors, even before the earth as we know it was created...

    I like this video because it is the only one of its kind so far. Unfortunately I feel like Ifa is kind of severely misrepresented in this video which is unfortunate.
    Yemoja followed her children across the sea to the Americas. She made storms to stop the ships that were stealing her children to no avail.
    Yemoja would never abandon her children for she is the mother of all.
    If she came the rest of the family came with her and they are just as present here in the Americas as the Lwa.

    My mother was practicing voodoo before she passed away without mentioning it and I realized it when I took a piece of peppermint candy from the candy dish on her dresser and ate it, she had a fit, she was very upset with me, but I did not know what I did wrong. There will be no harm to you ever when you operate in the will of God, and purposed harm has been "practised" or orchestrated without your knowing. It's like the snake that bit Paul the transformed Saul.
      Another point I would like to make is that all crafts used by ANY alchemist, does NOT cause harm to anyone. All pain is SELF inflicted. You mother was in anguish due to the fact that the harm she meant to cause with that candy will NEVER work in the sense she means if she means to HARM people. She will always ONLY inflict that pain on herself unless she has been put in imbalance due to a direct inflicted hurt to her integrity by an outside energy. Period. God protects his own(PURE hearts) and has dominion over ALL sources of energy in existence. Always have. Always will. Thanks for sharing. ❤🕵️‍♀️🖤😏

Only a minuscule amount of that oral knowledge is known to the generality of the people, aside from that held by direct custodians of that body of knowledge in Yorubaland and other parts of West Africa who continously pass it from one generation to the other.

    This was a great video and you said some real stuff!
    For people in the comments, first realize that what you mean by Ifa may not be what another person means. It’s hard to even define it. What is Ifa? The name of (a) Yoruba religion/spirituality revolving around venerating the orishas? A Yoruba divination system? The name of a particular god behind said divination system? I’ve heard all three and more perspective argued for. It’s really hard to definite many things within African spirituality because of the nature of the diaspora - concepts have changed and evolved over time and over seas. Depending on the tradition you’re approaching a topic from, one thing can mean something completely different (e.g. are Legba, Elegua, and Eshu the same spirits or different? I’ve heard a number of valid approaches. Where you land should be a matter of discernment and respect for tradition, but it will always come down to your subjective perspective built from experience).
    Let’s have grace for one another and remember that we’re all in this diaspora together, and at the end of the day we are all seeking the same gnosis. Love ✊🏽

    Great video. Thanks for the info as the concept and paths to Voodoo can be very confusing to sort out. Does Haitian Voodoo have anything like IFA? From my understanding in the Lukumi/Ocha IFA works hand in hand with Orisha Priest to help people find balance in their life and get to a better place in life. Orisha Priest are mounted and the Babalawo have power that the Orisha Priest don't have. You have to go to both at some point for different reasons. Now, with that said, sounds like Haitian Voodoo has transformed into it's own spirituality and like other African Spiritualities involving Voodoo and/or IFA spirituality/practices migrated into America and even transformed some more. Which would leave more options for people in America to work with in reconnecting and walking the path of those Ancestors. I am curious if IFA in Africa is a stand alone practice or is there Orisha Priest that get mounted? Also the different classes or families of Spirits that are hot or cold can all act fast or slow as they see fit. I don't see fast as more power, but it sure is nice to get shit done when you need it too. I wish I had these teachers for my Native American Ancestry so while a little confusing at least the gatekeepers and keepers of wisdom are here to seek with a little more ease and they are the key to keeping any spiritual system working correctly and to keep going. Thanks for pointing out that there are differences and it would be wise to not confuse them. Even with my limited knowledge....to me they are so obviously very different in many regards regardless of their common roots. Wado and Blessings.

      rocky sanders Lol IFA IS AFA (Vodu) and vice-versa. People don’t really know the history behind how these aspects are connected so, they “create” a history. IFA priests of Benin, Togo and Ghana are called AFA/AFAVI a.k.a BOKOR/Bokonor. Yoruba is not the foundation of IFA/AFA; you can literally go anywhere within the vicinity’s between those countries and learn the same EXACT principles to be a diviner. Peace.

    Well put. Haitian Vodou (and Dominican Vudú; Cuban Vodú; Brazilian Vodum; and Louisiana Voodoo.) comes from West African Vodun (Benin, and southern and central Togo; as well in Ghana, and Nigeria) where some of our ancestors came from AND has aspects of the Yoruba faith (Southwestern Nigeria and the adjoining parts of Benin and Togo, commonly known as Yorubaland. Yoruba religion is formed of diverse traditions. It has influenced a host of thriving traditions such as Santería, Umbanda, Trinidad Orisha, and Candomblé). Not to mention influences from Catholicism.

    Haitian Vodu is Ewe Vodu from West Africa, mainly Benin, Togo and Ghana. Ifa and Afa/Fa is basically the same, whereas the Orishas operate Ifa and Vodu operates Fa.

    Ifa came to the Americas as well through Cuba with Santería and later Lukumi as well as the rest of the Caribbean then brought to the Americas. Let's not forget it's influence in Brazil. People are also mounted in Ifa. I don't think you should be doing a comparison. You're biased and you're not knowledgeable enough in Ifa. That being said, I have respect for all ancestor/African based versions.
