Super Bowl IX Steelers vs Vikings - Fleming & Cope Dubbed w/TV Broadcast

  • We painstakingly dubbed this NBC TV broadcast with the iconic radio call of Pittsburgh legends Jack Fleming and Myron Cope. Enjoy! If you go to our site, we've also done this for Super Bowl X (Steelers vs Cowboys) and it is FANTASTIC. Sadly, TH-cam immediately banned it worldwide. Here's the link to watch SB X: www.mcmillenand...
    The Steel Curtain absolutely CRUSHES Minnesota, finally winning a championship for "The Chief" while limiting Fran Tarkenton's supposedly high-powered offense to a paltry 119 total yards -- 17 rushing yards on 22 carries (an embarrassing average of 0.8 yds per carry) and 102 yards passing with 3 INTs -- a Super Bowl record which still stands today.
    MVP Franco Harris (34 carries, 158 yards, 1 TD) is virtually unstoppable, Bradshaw is smart and efficient and the Pittsburgh offensive line simply manhandles Minnesota's famous Purple People Eaters. Defensively, the Pittsburgh's Steel Curtain is nothing short of phenomenal, especially the front four in what is easily the most dominating performance by a defensive line in Super Bowl history. Mean Joe Greene is overwhelming, Fats Holmes is immovable and L.C. Greenwood is in Tarkenton's face all afternoon, smacking down 3 passes and forcing numerous poor throws.
    But perhaps most noteworthy is the performance of Dwight White, which is nothing short of heroic. White -- who spent the week in the hospital with pneumonia and lost 18 pounds -- totally dominates, scoring the game's first points on a safety and batting multiple passes, one of which is intercepted by Joe Greene.
    Minnesota's offense crosses into Pittsburgh territory 4 times, The first, the result of a Bleier fumble, ends in a missed FG. Their 2nd trip ends in a Mel Blount INT after Glen Edwards nearly decapitates WR John Gilliam, popping the ball 20 feet into the air and right into Blount's waiting arms. The 3rd ends when Joe Green intercepts a Tarkenton pass batted by Dwight White near midfield. And the 4th and most promising (following a 42-yd pass interference penalty that puts the ball at the Pittsburgh 5) ends when Mean Joe recovers a Chuck Foreman fumble (forced by Ernie Holmes).
    Had the Vikings not scored a TD on a blocked punt, this one would've been a shut out. Includes the halftime, commercials and 30 minutes of postgame material including the trophy presentation, fan interviews and round table player interviews with Bradshaw, Franco, Rocky and several members of the defense.

      @@mcmillenandwife , we need to ban TH-cam for the ban. Also, I wish that the people that did the commentary for the EPSN NFL 2K series could do the commentary for past Super Bowl games, as that is a good video game, as well as one of the first video games that really captured how it truly felt to not only play, but also see, a football game, and people are STILL uncovering things in the code of that game to this day.

    This is great. I had the last quarter and local postgame coverage (along with the early part of SB13) on an audio tape. My grandma set up a tape recorder in front of the TV for my grandpa who had to work in the mines and couldn't watch. Unfortunately, this recording doesn't have my GM screaming and yelling in the background and yapping at the dog to get away from the TV.

    Was this fabulous or what? This was the first time I ever heard this Pittsburgh radio team. My oh my! I've not heard all the great broadcasting duo's over the years, but I'd made the case that these 2 guys were in a league of their own. They had me practically hopping out of my seat in excitement. After that "no call" on Tarkenton when he tossed the ball away, I thought Fleming was going to take leave of his duties in the booth and go down to the sidelines and confront the referee himself. What a display of love and loyalty towards one team. Pittsburgh deserved all their titles over those years; especially with such a supporting cast in the booth. True immortals of the game of football, they will surely remain.

    Watching back then, the only teams that had any sucess at all against the Steeler defense was the teams that cut block the front four and had a lead blocker to take on the first linebacker to arrive for the back. Trying to match up with them failed miserably.

      Yeah, turnovers in that era of football were just part of the game. Crazy. The ‘79 Steelers committed the most turnovers in the league with 52 and won the Super Bowl. They beat the Rams, who committed the 2nd most turnovers with 49. That will NEVER happen again. The Steelers and Oilers combined for 14 turnovers in the 1978 AFC Championship. The Steelers and Raiders combined for 12 turnovers in the ‘75 AFC Championship. Unimaginable today.

    Given the Steelers' success in the Super Bowl era, it is often overlooked that for their first 40 years in the NFL, they were the least successful team in the league. The team joined the league in 1933 (they were a semi-pro team before then) but never won a championship before the merger and they only made the playoffs once which they lost. All that changed when Chuck Knoll became head coach in 1969. Since the merger, the Steelers along with New England are the most successful teams in the league, each having won six Super Bowls.

      It was a combination. Noll stated he absolutely wanted Bradshaw, who he viewed as the best player in the 1970 draft. Art Rooney said they considered trading the pick to St. Louis for a bunch of starters, but Dan Rooney said he had no interest in a trade once they won the coin toss with Chicago (who was also 1-13) to get the #1 pick, and Bradshaw was always their choice.

      I have to disagree. This was worse than it looks on paper. An utter annihilation of the Vikings. If not for a blocked punt, it would've been a shutout. The Steelers were penalized for more yards than the Vikings gained in total offense. Pittsburgh ran 57 times for 249 yds; the Vikings ran 21 times for 17 yds. It's a shame that Fran Tarkenton didn't manage to win at least one Super Bowl during his illustrious career. Despite all his accomplishments, when people remember him today, the first thing thing that will come to their minds is, "He lost three Super Bowls." It's not flattering.

    • @mcmillenandwife
      @mcmillenandwife  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not winning it all hurt his legacy, for sure. Still, he’s a Hall of Famer and at the time he retired, he held just about every meaningful passing record. A great player, but you’re right, the Super Bowl losses are a major blemish.

      @@mcmillenandwife The same can be said about Jim Kelly. Despite all his achievements, when most people remember him, they'll say something like, "Yeah, he was a great player but he lost four Super Bowls." • @mcmillenandwife
      @mcmillenandwife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, the Super Bowl loss to the Giants kind set Jim Kelly's trajectory. That was their best chance to win, and getting bested by Jeff Hostetler isn't good for legacy building. Kelly was obviously a great QB, obviously, but winning championships is the true measuring stick of greatness for QBs..

    • @georgfriedrichhandel4390
      @georgfriedrichhandel4390 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mcmillenandwife Hostetler was not a great QB (then again, neither was Mark Rypien) but he and the Giants executed a brilliant strategy that defeated the Bills - ball control. Hostetler knew that the best way to neutralize Buffalo's potent offense was to keep their offense off the field. New York controlled the ball for just over 40 minutes of that game, But despite that, the Bills and Kelly very nearly won. In the 19 minutes they controlled the ball, they still scored 17 points and were in a position to win the game but for that missed FG at the last second. So that loss was not Kelly's fault but a loss is still a loss and as I said, that's all most people will remember.

    • @mcmillenandwife
      @mcmillenandwife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@georgfriedrichhandel4390 Agreed, the Giants had a great game plan (credit Bill Parcels) and Hostetler managed to execute well enough to win.
