Spent my retirement fund on cancer operations and treatments for my dog. His name was Marjorie's Samwize Gamgee and he had " carried " me up the mountain to throw a ring ,so to speak, in the fire. Thank goodness he was with me. Now I have another mountain to climb and Litlbit is with me...she is a little bit like Samwize. Her outer ears had been surgically removed due to infections and no-one wanted her because of her appearance. He named her Eerie. My daughter is studying Microbiology at UVM, and something interesting she told me - coincidentally- just the other day that I HAD to share with you after watching this... Chickens can produce an antibody that neutralizes cat allergies specifically. She said something like if the cats eat the egg yolks, and the chickens are exposed to cats regularly, it will make the cats "less allergic" to someone with a cat allergy. Might be your balanced farm eco-system that is helping you out!

    • @michellesmithunroe2463
      @michellesmithunroe2463 ปีที่แล้ว +14

That's fascinating info! Kinda like eating local honey because the bees have foraged on the pollen to which we'll be exposed. However, based on what I know, it's a protein in the saliva of some cats that creates reactions in allergic individuals. Assuming that's still the widely accepted theory, I'm having a hard time conceptualizing how exposure to the chickens is a factor. If it's not, I have a lot of speculations because it would serve to help prove that the health and welfare of the animal from which the food source is derived may actually produce different types of proteins among the same species! 🤔
I strongly suspect that the numbers of people experiencing allergic reactions has increased over the same course of time as the growth of factory farming. Of course it's not the only influence but it would be an interesting study. I will be digging deeper and would love any links your daughter may be able to provide!

This happened to one of our cats too. It was around Halloween, we usually bring in all the animals at night for that week because as sick as it sounds, theres a rise in animal deaths around then, and people are advised to keep their pets inside. We looked everywhere but couldn’t find one of the girls.
The cats loved to sleep in the driveway well past the sidewalk and curb but there were track marks in the grass and on the street showing where they sped up to take the curve and hit her intentionally. She was a beautiful tortie, not even two yet and there was nothing we could do for her.
So I always strongly advise people to take measures now during Halloween to protect their pets. There are sickos out there and it’s not a myth that people kill animals during this time for kicks. Especially darker ones. The shelters around here actually won’t let black cats and darker furred animals be adopted during this time. They usually claim kennel cough or something to protect the darlings in quarantine. How sick is that?

It’s so aggravating because usually there’s no jail time at all, just fines if there’s not a slap on the wrist. Then years down the line a lover/parent/stranger is found killed the same way and everyone’s like, “there were never any signs!” Really? You sure? What happened to Spot again?

I’m sorry that is happening to your girl. @ just 3 years. Hopefully it will not be as hard as u are trying to prepare for. About 35 yrs ago I was a child playing outside. I found a kitty. Begged my Mom and she loves kitties too so it wasn’t hard at all. His name was Tiger. Orange tabby. I have met so many kitties, never one like him though. I was an only child and he was essentially my sibling. He was very lovey. Let me dress him in baby onesies and push him around in my doll stroller. He really did not mind. One day he just jumped off the kitchen chair wrong and he had to become a 3 legged kitty. When I tell u he didn’t bat an eye…I had him for many years. When it was time for me to leave the nest, remember struggling so much with knowing it was better for him to stay with my parents, in his home. I still got to see him whenever I wanted and he saw my 1st apartment and had Christmas there. I have a vanity plate that refers to 9 lives for a reason. Actually for kitties and for me too. I’ve know I’ve used @ least 3:) She is loved. And I hope u both are going to be just fine. There is @ least one famous YT kitty who has just one eye. She has a great life. Really enjoyed this format Morgan! As we all know, you are a natural and talented story teller. I've been following your channel for awhile, so none of this story was new to me- however hearing it all and getting a few more details (her arrival to the farm, the paw in the car, some more medical info, etc.) really added depth and emotion. Also, your use of old footage to tell the story in the moment it happened also was really cool! Definitely think about going back through your old unused footage and showing new clips- what didn't seem to look good back then might be a total jem now in retrospect. Overall, I really like how you branch out and do different things. I think my favorite type of video will always be ones that show how the animals interact with eachother (farm politics is one of my all time favs). Give Lil the Miracle Cat a good scratch for me!

Morgan is the absolute best story teller! The origin story of Lil barn cat absolutely warmed my (cold black) heart & my eyes even got a little moist a few times. It’s sweet how he has embraced and genuinely fallen in love with his kitten and I’m so happy that he & Allison were able to afford the $16K to save her life.

Oh my, my heart breaks. I hope this wont be too hard to watch. I too would spend what it takes to heal my fur balls. Another barn cat into retirement and house cat convert. I understand they are working cats and love they have the freedom of an outdoor life but this is fact that means they endure more injuries and risk and shorter lives because of it. Not a judgement, if I lived on such a large piece of land my cats would have full access too.

Regarding Pablo's future retirement. I wonder if you could build a catio/cattery/barn mudroom that's open during day and closed for aging barn cats that need some extra safety for the night. Could double as a quarantine for any injured/recovering barn cat. Also maybe triple as new barn kitten training center? For the aging population you could have the all barn cats used to the space by shifting feeding routine to inside the enclosure while keeping it open. Just a thought.
Someone else might have a better idea but that's what I can think of.
I give my props to you and your every life and critter respecting ways.

An enclosed catio would be really great, especially when you can close it up/insulate it for winter and cats love them. People get really creative making them.

As a dog owner, I’ve experienced paying for the week-plus critical care fees. Only to have to make to decision to end their suffering, when it becomes clear that they have no quality of life…you have to give them the chance to fight. As a member of the family, they deserve that much. But when it becomes too much for them, you have to let them go with love. The good life they have lived with you tells of the love you have for them, Morgan!

Fantastic story, Morgan. When you were telling us why Allison was telling you to FaceTime Lil’ Barncat, I got choked up with you.
I had a similar(ish) situation with my beloved black cat, Buckley, who we spent a fortune on. He lived to the ripe old age of 22, even though he spent the first 9 years of his life as an alley cat.
I never regretted spending all that money on him.
I’m just happy you have her as a constant companion now 😁.
Side note, my dad was allergic to cats, but after we got one (my mom just did it-went out and adopted a kitten), he developed a slight tolerance. He had to do all the same things you do, including having “cat blankets” and “cat-free” zones.

Wow, over $16,000 to save her life, and not knowing if she would even survive, incredible! Brought tears to my eyes just retelling what happened. So glad she's alive and living the good life thanks to you, Allison and some very kind viewers to this wonderful channel. Thanks Morgan for sharing, all is well at Gold Shaw Farm.

I am a lifelong cat person, but I got my wee rabbit 5 years ago and I have been a rabbit lady ever since. But oh, my, those rabbit vet bills are spicier than cat vet bills. Despite being the 3rd most popular housepet in the US, rabbits have to see exotic veterinarians. I’ll still do anything for my boy, he’s like my goddamn firstborn child. He has no effing clue how much I do for him.
