  • How can cancer therapy be tailored to the individual patient? Personalized cancer therapy is becoming a reality as a result of accumulating biological “big data” from data-intensive biomedical technologies combined with the advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) that ideally accommodates such big data. Based on the genetic code - the DNA - of each individual patient, AI can be exploited to uncover cancer targets that are unique to the tumor of each individual patient. Such intelligently selected cancer targets have the potential to generate an effective immune response that can fight off the cancer. Thus, with AI we have the possibility of achieving true personalization. Emma holds a PhD from DTU and is a research scientist working in the intersection between A.I. and immunology. She finds inspiration in bridging the gap between academia and industry, merging the best of both worlds to ultimately benefit the patients.

The V.A. started the MVP/ Million Veteran Program several years ago for exactly this purpose: specific, targeted treatment based on DNA, personal and family medical history, etc etc., via a lengthy questionnaire and a blood sample from each Veteran. As they told us, this research will take years, we will not individually benefit [unless we are very young and AI finds a treatment that works in our lifetime], etc. We who have been getting current traditional treatments
