Honestly speaking, Jason, you have provided us with the most accurate and objective reviews on Marineland filters that I've seen in TH-cam. I was convinced by your reviews that, Marineland filters are actually better than the aquaclears. thank you for your approach and just let me tell you that I just purchased the filter, Haha! And as a matter of fact, I have one Penguin 350 up and running on one of my tanks. I can't wait to see the update on the performance of this filter! Cheers, Jason!
Just got this 375 today for a acrylic lowboy tank. I really like the design and how much it flows. I didn't even realize there's a red media basket in the lower center of the machine as well.
I purchased two fluval aquaclears 20-50 gallon because there is a die hard community surrounding them. One lasted 12 days and the other was dead straight out of the box. The flow control on them was the most Jank tacky thing I’ve ever seen, especially for a 70$ filter. They weren’t self priming either. I got a marineland penguin pro 275 and I have to say…. It beats an aqua clear in EVERY SINGLE CATEGORY, literally, not one thing was the aqua clear better at and above all else, the filter simply works. I loved the fact it had a media basket directly under the intake in the filter box in addition to having a huge media compartment in the second portion AS WELL as bio wheels…. Such a great brand and filter, I’m marine land for life
I have used the older 350, 150, and Mini Penguin Bio Wheel filters and have never had anything less than a great experience. The only downside, which they seem to have fixed, is the lack of being able to reliably self prime after a power outage. It's no fun having to run around the house with a cup and hurry to try to re-prime a bunch of filters when the power comes back on, lol. Like i said those filters were a staple of mine. Glad to see Marineland is still in the game and making these. I'm going to be setting up another aquarium soon-ish. I've been out of the hobby for a couple years. Thanks for this excellent review!
The b4 & after of your pleco tank was definitely worth the price of admission. It reminded me of the first time I upgraded to an Aqauclear 70 from a Penguin 150 on my 29 long. That moment when I finally realized the sheer genius of impeller based filtration was the day I knew tank keeping would be my forever future 😁.
I like seeing product reviews like this, i'm not a fan of HOBs myself, I use canister filters and sponge filters, but the adjustable flow on these is pretty nice. Hope everyone had a phenomenal Christmas!
Recently found your video's here and really love them. You do a great job and appreciate you keeping to a very understandable level. I will be heading over to your page now and working my way through all your other video's. Thanks again for taking the time to put these together and stay safe my friend!!
I recently bought the Penguin Pro150(20gal tank) and LOVE it!!!! The ONLY dislike is the Bio-wheel stops spinning every once in a while and I have to manually re-spin it. Despite that one con, I highly recommend Marineland Penguin Pro !! Mine also came with a 3yr limited warranty which is always a plus!! 🧡🤍🤙🐠
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Lol! I'm not too worried about the wheel due to adding more Bio-media ,"AquaClear BioMax." 😬 My tank is still a little cloudy due to a bacterial bloom(new tank 2 months old) but I am planning on posting a short video, showing the Molly mating process. I can't wait to have babies!!!🤗🐠💞🙈🤙
Merry Christmas! And thank you for all the wonderful vids.. the great demos and such of equipment. You really help a lot of us who are on a budget and don't want to or can't buy multiple similar items
Just hooked up the new 450. Pay attention to the cable routing . It’s very easy to pinch the power cable between the filter housing bracket and tank lip. When full of water it is very heavy plus the motor vibrates a bit.
Merry Christmas Jason. I love your videos. You’re so easy to listen to and always insightful. I particularly think the expandable intake tube is super neat. These are very affordable and effective filters. I’m glad to see they’re continuing to make small quality of life improvements and tweaks to their technology.
That filter looks great. Maybe it is out of the topic but I would really like to see a video about fish diseases covering common diseases , diagnosing and treating them. Another important point is disease transmission to humans via fish. Thanks a lot for all the efforts.
I have a 40 gallon tank. 4 gold fish right now. I am getting between 6-8 white cloud minnows and 4-6 Kuhli loaches as well as a few live low light plants. I am going to put a large sponge filter in my tank. I was curious if I should also get a filter system like the penguin pro as well? Thank you sir. Your videos are superb and I am subscribed.
I might add a HOB just because the Goldfish kick up so much stuff! Maybe keep an eye on those white clouds as the goldfish get larger they will eat them sometimes.
For my koi ive been using a Wal-Mart 55 and i have to hot rod it nonstop and sounds like im doing laundry all day 😆 the pump being in the water is amazing from engineering standpoint!
I'm very pleased to see Marineland up their game. How does it handle low water levels? I know my tidals sound horrible once water level is below it comfort zone.
Thank you for sharing all of your knowledge! I'm working on getting my first aquarium together and I'm going with a 75 gallon and looking to go with Amazon cichlids. My question would be, will one of these 375 penguin pros be enough? If I step up to the 450 emperor pro the price doubles to about $100 vs $50 for the 375. I could always add a second 375 down the line once the tank gets more crowded. It will be a lightly stocked tank for awhile so that I can get things running correctly. Thanks again!
Looks like some nice improvements. Time will tell if the new design keeps the bio wheels spinning. One thing that I dislike about marineland filters is their power consumption vs other brands. The Aquaclear 70 draws 6w of power, while the previous marineland filters draw 22w(?). I believe the AC110 is closer to 14w. What is the power consumption of the new model? I do like the slim profile as well. Nice review. Thanks for sharing.
How’s the 450 holding up.? I’ve been bingeing your content like a madman.. I mean a beginner fish enthusiast :) so here’s my question I’m setting up my 55 with cichlids as you already know! Ideas, Should I get the 375 on amazon and also grab a 350 from petsmart (they’re on sale cheap right now) I’d come out right under the price for a 450. Or should I just grab two 350s for the price of the 375😎. I’m also going to be doing a sponge as well. I’m keeping all this in mind as I do plan to upgrade to a larger tank. I really appreciate all of your content and I’m trying not to get To overwhelmed by all the options with everything. What’s you thoughts? so many options....To much? I freaking love you man so knowledgeable and I highly appreciate you and respect the time you take to help people learn the right way!
So, the 375 is significantly quieter than the 350s. I think running both on a 55 gallon will probably be too much. You could easily do a 375 on one side and a sponge on the other and that should work out well. Both the 450s and 375 I have are doing great! Thanks for watching!
Great review! Need your advice...for a 60 gallon tank. I'm debating between two of the 275 Pro or a single 375 Pro Penguin? Do you think the 375 Pro might be harmful to my smaller fish such as guppies? Thx in advance!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!! 🎄 I always enjoy your reviews. Have you ever heard of the Dymax Slim Flow Filter Series HOBs? They’re for smaller tanks (up to 20g) but they are quite slim and definitely would fit against the wall.
I was wondering why the 350s & the 400s were going on sale for so cheap, I purchased 2 400s for ~ $25.00 each. I use 4 cartridges each in mine & rinse out the dirty ones with the sink sprayer then set them out to dry so they air out any chemicals that may be in the rinse water. I will cut a slit at the top of the filter material & discard the carbon if not needed, I have found that the cartridges can be rinsed out & reused dozens of times!
Just bought one of these, won't fit over the lip all the way on my Marineland 75 gallon tank, it's on far enough to function but has insufficient flow to spin the biowheels.
Fluval 106 is way quieter than Penguin Pro 125. I bought Marineland Penguin Pro 125 based on how quite this review said the 375 was. I bought t to replace a totally working Fluval 106. The 106 was a bit hard to get at for maintenance , move monitor and other things etc, so thought I would try a Penguin Pro. Not sure if I will get used to sound difference, it is cheaper by far. My take if your not sitting in front of a desk aquarium trying to focus in work then get it.
Interesting - I still find myself having to check to see if the water is moving in all my tanks with the pro series filters because I can't hear anything.
I wonder if you know the “pre filter” sponge you bought separately has two uses. One as pre filter and another inside the filter housing on the other end of the intake. It replaces the small sponge
This video was really helpful. Can you please share link that explains how to use filter floss instead of cartridges? I couldn’t find the link. Thanks!
Can someone help me please? One day my power went out and now my filter won’t work. I looked for the impeller so I could clean it but it was at the very bottom of the intake guard tube bulb thing (idk what it’s called, where the filter takes in the fish water) and I’m quite sure that’s not where it’s suppose to be. I have no clue where it’s suppose to go and how it’s suppose to go in the filter. I’ve search everywhere and I can’t find any videos online or anything and I need help. I don’t have any backups or any money to buy a new one and it’s been broken for a while. Can someone please help me
If it’s this filter it goes in the motor housing (it may have fallen out but that’s rare). You can remove the bottom plate of the motor housing where the intake tube connects. Make sure the filter is unplugged when you do this.
what about the other major change: the media basket? Please show it! another change they NEED to make is providing hinged filter baskets so we can reload the carbon..
I would have liked to see you insert the filter cartridges, mine seem to be at least a half inch to small to sit into the side slits, they move around and the wheels do not spin. I have to hold the filter up in order for them to spin and then this moves the filter out of their slits continuously as the filter seems to be less wide than what they need to be to stay fit in their slits. So frustrating, I am considering taking this back as it seems useless. Great flow though. Am I doing something wrong?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I had a aquaclear70 sponge so I put it in one side and that side is rolling continuously basically. I put the extra filter into the other side so it has two and that cartridge doesn't roll at all. I don't want to lose the good stuff in them though so it will stay like that until I get another sponge and the existing sponge can grow some bacteria. It did seem to work better doing a stop and go spin if I held the entire filter up to be level... not going to live standing beside the tank holding the filter cannister up though. Also realized as I took a hand lamp to the HOB to see what might be going on that I had installed the filters upside down. There are little clips only on one end of the filters... and initially I put them in upside down whereas if they are correctly installed right side up it helps to keep the filters in place... so once they were installed incorrectly I wouldn't know there were little edge bits to help keep them in place on the top only. In my defense the area is dark and my glasses are ancient... lol I hope you have enjoyed my novel and thanks to you I will get two sponges and save some money. I won't be returning the penguin because I like the flow and filtering on my 55 and the sponge is awesome :)
I know you lean towards the Marineland over the AquaClear. I have always used the 350s just because they are more affordable, but they are so rattley... if rattley is a word... and the 450 and the 375 look seem to be much quieter and push more water. Are you allowed to speak about price? Are they comparable to the old models or are they closer to the AquaClear pricerange now? Obviously long term reliability is still in question. I'll look forward to future updates.
The 375s are on the market right now at about $49? What's weird is the Aquaclear 70s actually cost less right now - granted they're not pushing as much water through. The 110s are still more expensive, however. I'm actually really surprised the 450s aren't on the market yet - missed the holiday season. I have no idea what they are going to cost. Both are very quiet though.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I just bought a 110 to replace a 350 that finally gave out after close to 10 years. The 110 is a beast but it's SO much money. I guess we wait to see what Marineland does with the cost of the 450s. I know personally, the old 400s never lasted long for me. That's why I switched to the smaller model. The 350s are tough as tanks, but they are as loud as tanks too 🤣
I have a Penguin Pro 275 but having issues with after 4 days of installing I noticed the Bio wheel is not turning anymore. I know I know a normal issue with Marineland filters BUT my issue is due to the water flow. After 4 days of filtering my standard C size filter seems to be clogged(even though the tank does not even seem to be dirty at all before and after the install. But the issue is the water can not go through the filter fast enough and in turn going over the overflow on the intake side so water flow if not enough to turn the bio wheel. I cannot replace these filter cartridges every 4 days so I need to figure out how to resolve this. I was thinking to get the micron filter to put where the filter basket is but I have seen reviews that these clog up very quickly as well. This filter will be of no use if the water is just going over the overflow and not through the filter media yes some goes through and filters but the bio-wheel is being affected by this and I would rather all water filter not just some. Does anyone have any ideas about what I could do to resolve this other than getting a different type of filter?
I would definitely just buy bulk filter floss. The filter sounds like it is doing its job - trapping stuff. Bulk filter floss is a fraction of the cost of filter pads and will save you a ton of money long term. That should solve your issues.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thank you for the reply! The filter floss should I buy one of the empty cartridges and put in there or n the media basket the intake tube goes into?
I bought this filter after my 3 month old Penguin 350 stopped pumping water. This filter worked great for a month and now even after cleaning it fully the biowheels only spin for a day before one or both stop. Have you had any experience with this?
JK and sons fun builds I’m sure noise can impact fish, but I wonder how much if it’s a constant low level noise? Hard to say if there’s much noise even coming from the pump at all.
How is the noise compared to the 350? I have a 350 in my bedroom, and while I've gotten used to it, it's certainly not quiet to me. The water spits out erratically and the pump makes a rumbling noise. Is this 375 more similar to a canister filter's noise level?
Yo dude! I have a question: so those golden snails behind you are they the algae eating type? I have 3 of these snails in a 5 gallon tank with a african dwarf frog right now; how long do they live? Do they do great mantanience in the tank, and if you have a filter like i do, will the newborns get sucked in? I dont have a sponge on the intake :/ thanks if you can reply!
what is the clearance in inches for the filter to hang over the back of the tank??? i have an all glass 75 gal aquarium, my old aquaclear 70 could not fit. There was enough overhang clearance to get it to hang properly over the inside portion of the tank. How is the clearance with the penguin pro 375???? Please help
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I'm sorry, I mean the clearance between the filter body and the intake that goes into the water. That area that hooks onto the tank. How big of space is that. My old filter aqua clear 70 was to small, it could not properly hang over the back of the tank. Please assist
My marine land 350 old one intake tube was way to long? I had to cut it.. and this was on my 40 breeder, so did you have to cut yours for the pro? Also my bio wheels stop spinning and I only had it for a few weeks so I think ima buy the pro, but is the intake tube long? Did you have to cut it?
I would go into my usual refrain of designing filter boxes with much, much lager media compartments. But I thought I'd highlight an alternative if you are stuck with a filter with inadequate bio media capacity. And that is ... use a Poly-Bio-Marine Poly-filter well shielded by polyester fiber. The Poly-filter is sold as a dry mat that may be cut unto any shape to fit filters and it will absorb all soluble bio chemicals - minimizing the need for as much media to make a home for nitrogen cycle bacteria. It uses less space for the same job than activated carbon. Read up on it.
Can someone share the process of removing and replacing the impeller on these filters? I’m on my second one and it’s also vibrating and rattling from the impeller. Thanks
You have the remove the bottom part of where the motor assembly connects to the intake housing. The impeller is then easily acessible. Just know that it can be a little bit of a pain to get it back together!
You know, it's been a little frustrating that the filter isn't out yet. I have no idea what the hold up is, but I would have thought the filter would have been out by Christmas last year.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I guess I'll trade it in for a Penguin Pro 125 . It has an adjustable flow . Didn't really look for that when I bought it . Good filter though .👍😄

I use 4 cartridges each in mine & rinse out the dirty ones with the sink sprayer then set them out to dry so they air out any chemicals that may be in the rinse water. I will cut a slit at the top of the filter material & discard the carbon if not needed, I have found that the cartridges can be rinsed out & reused dozens of times!
acoldguy that would be why they are on sale. 😀
Yep - the center part of the filter compartment.
I love your vids , you literally save my tank, on numerous times, nice Filter,
Robert G. That’s awesome to hear! Thank you!

@@PrimeTimeAquatics it is this filter, I’ve done that but I can’t find any place where the impeller will be able to stay in place
Merry Christmas to you and your fammilly
Old Fish Guy merry Christmas!
This pro series got a lot of improvement from the old ones. Wish I've seen before.
They sure have - my favorite filter so far.
Looking into the penguin pro 275 or the tidal 55 for my 20 gallon long. What one would you recommend?
You could probably step it down to even a penguin 150 or tidal 30 for a 20 long? Tidal is very quiet.
I’m thinking of getting two on my 75 for my goldfish
Wills Tanks they should be able to handle the load!
Prime Time Aquatics it will only be two or 3 fancy goldfish
I don't like the seachem series or aqua clear. What is the next best hang on back filter? For a 40 gallon breeder
Marineland PRO?
Merry Christmas
val vanzile Merry Christmas!
Love your content (am a subscriber) that said, just noticed your tattoos: Web on the elbow, etc... curious, what do they mean to you?
Lamont R. They actually don’t mean anything. Haha
what about the other major change: the media basket? Please show it! another change they NEED to make is providing hinged filter baskets so we can reload the carbon..
My 375 after servicing it has the water coming down the middle as well as left and right sides. Not sure why its doing this.
I'm trying to decide between the penguin pro 275 and the tidal 55 for my 36g.
You really can't go wrong with either one. I have had very good luck with both!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thanks 👍
When is this available to the market?
Andrea Morales now! 😀
Prime Time Aquatics do you have an affiliate link? 😀
Andrea Morales just added. 😀Thanks for the reminder.
Some acrylic tanks have tiny slots. Will this fit? The tidal 75 or 110 wont fit in my 180 gallon
You will probably have to buy one and see. If it doesn't fit take it back.
That doesn’t sound right? I wonder with they sent the wrong size?
In my defense the area is dark and my glasses are ancient... lol
I hope you have enjoyed my novel and thanks to you I will get two sponges and save some money. I won't be returning the penguin because I like the flow and filtering on my 55 and the sponge is awesome :)
Another great review 👍
Thank you!
I am really considering one of these filters a quick question does it work without the bio wheels ? Can I just add a different type of bio media ?
The biowheels usually stop working - they have no meaningful impact on filter function.
I was wondering about being able to close the intake on the upper part of the intake. Thanks!
Awesome video. Man your videos are excellent. And that's the truth. Dropping the Mic on this vid... 🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤
Thank you for watching!
I bought this filter after my 3 month old Penguin 350 stopped pumping water. This filter worked great for a month and now even after cleaning it fully the biowheels only spin for a day before one or both stop. Have you had any experience with this?
I don’t pay much attention to the biowheels. They don’t really do much even when working.
I just bought a Marineland 200 hang on back filter and it makes a loud splashing noise, and splashes a lot. Do you know of a fix for this? Thank you!
If it’s filter water hitting the surface the only fix is to make sure the tank is filled enough.
Hi ,
I just bought the water filter but cannot make the 2 filter spin what can I do? Is gonna be problem if the filter doesn’t spin
Mine don’t spin. It’s not needed
I wonder how the pump being in the tank affects the fish ? Can’t noise have a negative affect on fish ?
JK and sons fun builds I’m sure noise can impact fish, but I wonder how much if it’s a constant low level noise? Hard to say if there’s much noise even coming from the pump at all.
Water is Not coming up what am I doing wrong I check the motor it is working if I plugged
THe only thing I can think of is something is either blocking the water in the tube or the tube tube isn't fully connected?
I just bought a 75 gal tank with the 375 filter is that filter enough to take care of my tank going to put cichlids in their
I think it should be enough. You can always add something later, but you should be ok.
How is the noise compared to the 350? I have a 350 in my bedroom, and while I've gotten used to it, it's certainly not quiet to me. The water spits out erratically and the pump makes a rumbling noise. Is this 375 more similar to a canister filter's noise level?
I am running the 375 and a few emperor 450s right now and they are all very quiet. With the pump inside the tank I don't hear any pump noise at all.
Should you want the intake very low to bottom of tank to filter out waster or higher up in the middle of the tank?
I like it on the lower half.
I just picked up the 350 and the number of micro-bubbles it produces makes the water look cloudy. Will this go away?
It should. I haven't seen that in any of my HOB filters.
Just ordered mine time to replace the old 350
Hope it works out well for you!
Can it be used for Saltwater or is it just for Freshwater ?
I don't keep salt water so I'm not sure of the best method of filtration?
So two of these on a 90 gallon would work perfectly?
For sure!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics awesome thank you! Love the channel!
They can live for a year or two. Sometimes they will get suked into the intake of a filter. A pre-filter intake sponge can help with that though.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Ok! thanks for the tips!
Looks great
I wish you stated how long that intake tube is.. would it fit on a 20L or is it too long?
I wouild say the 375 will be too big for the a 20 gallon in general. I might go with the PRO 100?
what is the clearance in inches for the filter to hang over the back of the tank??? i have an all glass 75 gal aquarium, my old aquaclear 70 could not fit. There was enough overhang clearance to get it to hang properly over the inside portion of the tank. How is the clearance with the penguin pro 375???? Please help
You need about 4.5" between the tank and the wall.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I'm sorry, I mean the clearance between the filter body and the intake that goes into the water. That area that hooks onto the tank. How big of space is that. My old filter aqua clear 70 was to small, it could not properly hang over the back of the tank. Please assist
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I have enough clearance from the back of filter to the wall. That's fine
I didn't have to cut anything (have one on a 40 breeder now). It does extend all the way to the substrate though.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics so I shouldn’t get the pro? I have sand and I don’t want the filter getting sucked up with sand. What is your thoughts
when adding cartridges, are there many different type of cartridges to add such as mechanical chemical and biological like the aquaclear 110/500?
I only use filter floss and sponge. Yes, they have options for other types, but I haven't found it necessary to add anything else.
so question with this filter if your water level went below the pump does it still pump water
As long as the water stays above the intake it should be ok.
Prime Time Aquatics ah sweet thank you for the info I’m a slacker and let my water get down sometimes
Would you recommend this for a 125 fish only saltwater tank. I plan to keep it lightly stocked.
LSanti I’m not sure about salt water since I don’t have any saltwater tanks. It can certainly handle that size tank though.
Yeah you can one but you will need to probably add 2 more. So in total use 3 of these. I use the old 350 and an AQuaclear 70 on my 75G reef.
I have a canister but want this hang on back filter water fall. Will this be over kill?
Depends on the size of the tank and the fish in the tank (if they like high flow).
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I have Oscars and GT GS and convict
I would go into my usual refrain of designing filter boxes with much, much lager media compartments. But I thought I'd highlight an alternative if you are stuck with a filter with inadequate bio media capacity. And that is ... use a Poly-Bio-Marine Poly-filter well shielded by polyester fiber. The Poly-filter is sold as a dry mat that may be cut unto any shape to fit filters and it will absorb all soluble bio chemicals - minimizing the need for as much media to make a home for nitrogen cycle bacteria. It uses less space for the same job than activated carbon. Read up on it.
PalJoey 1957 thanks for sharing!
Thank You.
What happened to the Marineland Emperor Pro 450 Filter .......... where are they ??
You know, it's been a little frustrating that the filter isn't out yet. I have no idea what the hold up is, but I would have thought the filter would have been out by Christmas last year.
What y'all think about this 375 in a 75gal cichlids tank?
It's a good fit!
would this be good for a 30 gallon tank ?
mmiguy2306 I’d probably step it down to maybe a 150?
🤔 How can I slow down the waterfowl on my Marineland Penguin 150 ?
Unfortunately- it can be difficult
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I guess I'll trade it in for a Penguin Pro 125 . It has an adjustable flow . Didn't really look for that when I bought it . Good filter though .👍😄
I get a lot of splashing noise from the bio wheels. Is there a fix?
It's probably more a function of the water hitting the surface? We keep our water level high in the tank and don't hear anything?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Noted thank you!
Any media baskets ?
The compartments are more designed for vertical media trays. I just lay the sponge and floss in the compartments and it works well.
