I can't wait until I ask "when will my AK50 be shipped to my local FFL?"
Yes!
Effective immediately, we are repealing the authority of the ATF and turning into a convenient store that sells are those items and more. -Congressman Brandon, probably within the first few months.

Just a politician, imo.

As a former machinist I always recognized how difficult your project would be. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to seeing it in action. Don't compromise. I love this project.
I'm interested in your professional thoughts here. In a world of CNC, how is having a part out of spec still a thing?
Tolerances specified on the prints and datums are a big part of what contribute to what is and isn't out of spec. Also process. What helps for sheet metal parts is to have an engineering team design the custom tooling for fabrication. There are prints for tooling used to make firearms that you don't see unless you are fabricating. I haven't seen the AK50 prints, but where I work engineering sends us stacking tolerances. Other processes to think about is depending on material thickness, warping happens during cutoff. Meaning inspection needs to happen before cutoff. Machinability of the prints is important. Again I haven't seen the prints, but where I work we receive prints with non standard dimensions for features. Meaning we have to custom make tooling instead of ordering. Designing a print from a fabrication/inspection perspective reduces these issues
@@jimvac77
I'll try to answer your question. CNC is very repeatable AFTER the part and whole procedure is proven. After that, things like worn tools loose fixture etc - etc can cause a bad part. The problem with the AK50 project is he only wants one, at least for now. So each part is trial and error just like the old days, In the case of the handguard the machine shop should have owned up to the flaws and either tried again or gave up.
@feez357 thank you. You'd think the manufacturer would still verify specs on the finished part prior to shipping to the customer though.
@jimvac77 it's very common for a first batch of parts to be slightly off. Usually, a contract for x amount of machined parts is agreed upon and your not paying for the first 1-3 prototypes while manufacture is perfected. When something has to be so precise, a test run or 2 is common.
Huge companies outsourcing manufacturing go thru the same thing. Hornby in the uk, a large toy company which makes scale model train replicas for hobbyist, when thru the same thing on their latest train and there a huge company. Think about going down to your local fabricator and asking for 1 custom car part. You'll pay for that 1 and it's unlikely to fit properly.
Designing & building a firearm is a literal work of art and science. It's a delicate balance of action, pressure, reaction, balance, and precision. I've been following your AK-50 build for some time now and I really appreciate you sharing your journey with us. I've only built one AK in my time (I'd like to build more in the future) which taught me that the design is just genius. I truly hope that your design is successful and goes into production even though I probably wouldn't be able to afford it ha ha ha!
It was twelve years from the AK-47 to the modern AKM and that had the whole Soviet Union behind it. Progress on the AK-50 is incredibly rapid when put into perspective.
Gotta love modern manufacturing and design methods.
You have to remember that AKM is mostly type 1 refined for mass-production so let me put it this way:
- AK"-46", worked on by three people on drafting tables against much more established designer teams
- AK-50 is now arguably here, still in design phase
- AK"-47" as accepted for production and service
- AK type 1 QC problems driving costs up
- AK type 2 and 3 production
- AKM finally accepted, and it still wasn't "whole soviet union behind it" but a dozen people with drafting tables while the rest of izhmash were busy making machined AKs
Modern digital engineering and manufacturing techniques make prototyping vastly easier but driving it to the point it can be produced to an army's demands of cost is a whole another story. If some day AK-50 in some form ends up being accepted as a replacement for M2 then yeah, it will be a straight up comparison to AKM's story.
No disrespect for this awesome project of course.
@@Klovaneer Yeah, it's basically a custom gun involving a lot of calculations and not designed for mass production. Basically this thingy can be compared to experimental weapon designs because it's a cool experiment, but it's not a military combat weapon. As for people who talk about ASh-12б 12,7х55 is no way a .50 BMG and is a totally different boi. It also moonlights as a revolver cartridge for one of the cyberpunkest guns ever, RSh-12 which is basically Mateba Autorevolver/Chiappa Rhino on steroids, perfect for decomissioning rogue androids and using it as a conversation starter with your colleagues in a van, using it as excuse for a long winded conversation about the nature of life and death and survival as a special police officer in an urban environment.
@@MrSomebodyStrange Russians had a rude awakening with crime and terrorism rampant after the dissolution and dished out dozens of funky designs. There is actually a direct counterpart to AK-50 - 6P62, a 12.7x108 mag-fed machine gun proposed for military police as a car-stopper iirc, straight up a freaking bolter.
Cool story bro
I am part of the underwater robotics team at my college. We once ordered a custom CNCd part for one of our robots that would fit over and hold the navionics and hardware compartments to the frame of the robot. We found out that the inside diameter was machined just wide enough to make the part totally useless. It now lives on a shelf in our workshop. It was 6,000 dollars.

Brandon, you never need to worry about "Nerding out". Its awesome seeing someone with the knowledge that you have about these types of firearms go into detail about things.
Dude when you geek out I also geek out, Because like you I love the engineering that goes into guns. I love seeing how 2 different inventors tackled the same problem, like triggers. Really wish I had the money for SDI. I don't understand how you guys are getting thru the day. If I was that close to being able to build it I would be going mad waiting. Chomping at the bit, tempted to call companies asking if they need a swift kick in the ass to help get my part, and I would definitely be tempted to meet someone in a dark alley if I just waited months for a part and they screwed it up, but still sent it to me.
I would like to point something out to you. Your main rail that was two narrow is a problem in deed but what I wanted to point out is that when you weld along the sides especially with how hot that heat signature is It can actually pull it together even closer ,what it’s doing is as your welding it shrinks the metal causing it to pull together even more I don’t know what process they or you used to make it .But i would recommend making a jig about.001 to .002 oversized inside dimension so when you weld and it cools you take the jig out and it stays the same size due to the shrinking, and I also would recommend that you bounce around on the TIG weld’s to keep the heat signature small that will help prevent warping and twisting. Hope this helps keep up the great work Brandon!
As a weld inspector, i c9mmend you on your attention to heat management. I'm sure many engineers would love for you to share what you know my friend.

@@YuuralTo battle!
Brandon man don't ever apologize for nerding out about this I'm sure there's a lot of us nerding out with you hearing you go into detail
Welcome to manufacturing my friend! Long turn around times, getting slammed with work, getting a trickle of work, then slammed again. You get a whole package of tools or parts to build, then the customer cancels it last minute because reasons, or some of the fine folks in Mexico crash a tool and it's all hands on deck for a month. It's pure chaos. I am not at all surprised you're waiting around a lot-- I would suggest looking at shops in Canada to do some work for you if you haven't, sometimes the turn around is better even with the transport, plus you're paying less due to the weaker Canadian dollar, something to keep in mind in the future for other builds. We have a lot of very talented trades guys here hungry for work.
Generally though, small projects like yours are going to to be very low priority-- shops tend to want to take on a lot of work that can last for months. If you're paying your guys more per hour than what you'll ever get from a SINGLE part, it's pretty much going to collect dust as a "when we're slow" kind of job. Just nature of the beast. So unfortunately you're going to be stuck with what we call "garage shops", or guys who are maybe a step above DIY who have the time and most importantly, the lack of overhead so they make money on this kind of stuff.
Hoping it works out great, you're almost better off just building the tooling yourself and doing everything besides machining in house. For example, you should look into getting a custom bending jig or something so you can do all your bending yourself, you'd end up saving a lot of time, money, and headache. At that point you can just send it out to get EDM'd, CNC'd, or water jet, which will have a MUCH faster turn around since set up is trivial for them... Let me put it this way, you're going to have a WAY easier time finding someone and getting someone to build you TOOLING than you will someone who has tooling and can make it for you. Especially if it's something custom like this. So in the future, invest in tooling, and invest less in looking for someone with the tool. That is the way!

I’m a CNC operator and for your heat treat issue I would recommend sending a slightly oversized part to heat treat and when it comes back you can grind or machine the hardened part down to size. This will help reduce warping and give you better tolerances with the finished part with a much nicer finish.

Production for certain parts can take awhile, but say a customer is shopping shops for parts runs, you run test part, and then a small batch. It really shouldnt take years to have custom parts machined. There's so many programs in the world to help make life easier. It's no simple job, clearly, but it's doable. your dedication, raw $$$$$ and desire for the AK.50 is inspiring Brandon. What a crew you have. Good luck with the boxing and especially your run for The House. Lets Go Brandon!
Brandon is such a great mix of wholesomeness and “I could air out this Walmart parking lot if I wanted to” and I absolutely love it. Love the AK50 stuff, good luck with the rest of the process and have fun with it.
Brandon Thats awesome what you have done over the last years but please make a clip where you guys put it together, it would be such a breath-taking moment
Man i wish i had your job. Looks like you have so much fun
Here we have 20% AK50 and 80% Brandon trying to stay coherent while he's so close to a near finished AK50
I'm a machinist in NC and everytime I watch your videos it makes me want to leave my job in aerospace and work for you. Love the content, keep it up!
I always enjoy these updates. Goodluck man
New follower here. I have no experience in guns and have not shot any gun ever. That being said I love all the information in this channel and the humor is grade A. This is something he’s making?!?!
Yup.
I dream of a day where UK gun law isn't actually shit and anti gun and I can look over to my wall and see the AK-50 on display. I am incredibly happy to see this project get as far as it has.
It's only against the law if you get caught
if only the UK didn't wage war on a free Europe.
Definitely but good luck explaining your way out of owning a semi automatic .50 Cal sitting on your wall
Why wait our borders are open....
@@atomic...All three would be illegal. 50. Cal is illegal, Semi Auto is illegal and having it outside of your gunsafe, which is different to your ammo safe, is illegal.
'I'm sorry, I nerd out when i talk about this stuff.' That's okay, nerd out. It's great to see passion around projects like this
Just want to let you know that you do have at least one lady that watches your channel Brandon! Can't wait to see the test fire!!
1:02 sounds like a Manny Pacquiao reference lol
minus the ak50 ofc
A work of art takes time and dedication, so take all the time you need Brandon and team!
Thanks for finally putting the "Where Ak-50" crowd at bay, Brandon! Can't wait for the test fire!
Ahhh two of the best talking about the front falling off.
To Brandon & all the legends working with him: Keep up the amazing work!
The two things I absolutely cannot wait for:
AK-50 V3 Test fire video
AK-50 ASMR (Ngl, the sound of that gas tube being put in was something special)
