Love this. I paddled the pigeon a month ago for the first time. Had a good group to explain most of this to me, but this kind of video is a great resource for those who might be looking to step up to the dirty bird.
Maybe it’s just me but I’m kinda surprised Vegomatic only gets ll+. Depending on the line the water can be kinda chaotic. Had a kinda shitty swim there over the weekend after flipping then bouncing off 5 or 6 rocks.
Oh no! Glad your okay! We pull our ratings straight off of American Whitewater in an effort to make them as objective and official as possible, and to be honest I def don’t always agree with those ratings. Anyways, thanks for watching! -Jer
The Dirty Bird actually was too toxic to run in the '80's, but as I was driving west on I-40 in 2002, I was surprised to see rafting outfitters. The Canton, NC paper mill cleaned up its act! I was looking for something easier than the Middle Ocoee to start my sons on, and the Lower Pigeon (Class II) fit the bill. The next year they were ready for this video's section, and then the Ocoee.
Yes! Its been a comeback story for the Pigeon River, and the hope is things get cleaned up even more over time! I will let Ira know to see if he can get a guide vid done on the Lower Pigeon soon! Thanks for watching! - Jer
So for some context, Powerhouse (IMO) is not 3+, if Pattons Run on Nanty is 2+ so is this, if Grumpy's on the Ocoee is 3+, Powerhouse is definitely not. Also years ago Lost Guide WAS 3+, not anymore, I'd say solid standard 3- no plus.
Hey! We actually pull our ratings directly from the American Whitewater page, in an effort to try and make the subjective rapid classification system as objective as possible. I don't (and you don't either) necessarily agree with every AW rating, and there is nothing wrong with that, but that is what we as a team have decided to do with our river guides! Anyways, thanks for watching! :) -Jer
Thanks for the video. I was looking for something to help learn the rapids. This is awesome.
That’s the goal with these videos! Glad it could be helpful for you -Tony

Hopefully many more people find it as helpful as you did - Tony
Nice little fun river that’s easy to get multiple laps on
Yup! super easy shuttle!
That helps a lot with explaining the rapids. Thanks!
Glad it helped! Thanks for watching Jamie!!

Beautiful river!
It sure is! -Tony
For a bouncier take on double reactionary, hit the curlers at the top of each hole, it makes for a fun ride
Hmmm that could make for a pretty awesome ride! -Tony

@@JerKayaks Oh yeah no worries. I figured that’s where the ratings had come from. I’m just a bit surprised that’s what they give it.
It's a II+ because you can easily slide left and avoid the feature
@@danielblanchat2320 Ahh gotcha gotcha. We always run it kinda right to center so that makes more sense. Thanks!

Is this normal flow level? That Double Reactionary Rapid looked like fun.
Yes this was filmed under typical release conditions. You should be able to find a release schedule online -Ira

Was that 1200 or 1700 cfs?
It was 1700 cfs the day we filmed it.
Hit me up jer, and I'll take you down the gorge in the oconaluftee on high water it puts this run on the bottom shelf.
Careful, we might just take you up on this -Tony
