Freezer Gallon Zip Lock bags fill with water and freeze! If power goes out you will have cold water for a few days. Trust me I been through 2 hurricanes and everybody says have water but when humidity levels are at 110% and it's hot you want something cold.
I keep about 1/4 water jugs..like juice bottles left over from all my kiddos in my freezers all the time. It gives you at least half a week worse case...or just a sudden death of the freezer or outages. Also, you use less power of you keep your freezers full so if don't have much or slaughter a pig and underestimate your room...you just pull water bottles for awhile. I figure I keep about ten gallons every day this way. She bought thoughtfully and was trying to make it fun as well. Another thing for those of us who homestead folks don't realize is we think be prepared all the time. You can't count on law enforcement to win your battles. Bad things happen and you gotta plan on it. Thus, my box of ammo is a little larger...glad you showed the guts to be real about it. Also, I have 2 weeks regular food all the time and at least three months back up could be longer if we grind wheat and corn lol...keep in mind there's seven of us...all the time plus living food. Live chickens, roosters, turkeys, geese, garden, etc.
Cheers for this, I been tryin to find out about "best foods to stock up on for survival" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Proutklarton Surviving Technics Plan - (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my mate got excellent results with it.
All the negative comments about not getting "organic food" are ridiculous. The foods that Becky bought are for convenience during a crisis moment. I'm sure she has canned food and still has meat from her home grown animals as well but when you are in full on survival mode during a big storm you don't want to be opening the freezer every time you are a little hungry and wasting the cold and allowing things to thaw out. You keep doing you @Becky's Homestead and ignore all the haters. An most importantly stay safe!!!!!!
I didn't think there were any haters. We just all do things differently. Becky is very entertaining and was just saying what she was doing to get ready before the hurricane. Goodness knows, the weathermen had us all scared to death! I never lost power even when it came through as 100mph but many around me did and still don't have power.
@@fwdolphin Exactly what I was thinking! What you put in your Emergency kit is up to you. As long as you have the essentials, It doesn't matter if the food is organic or not.

Becky and family...ya'll be SAFE!! I experienced Hurricane Hugo in 1989. My parents were alive. We lived 150 miles from the ocean in South Carolina. It was 100 mph winds for 13 hours NON STOP! We went without power for a long time. We were not in low lying areas so, we didn't get the flooding. But, it was horrible. It sucked out about 3 windows and did major damage with our plumbing because a tree's roots were wrapped around the plumbing and it took that out! Our candles would not stay lit during the storm. That was ok, because it was in the early early AM that the storm ravaged our state. I hope your animals are pinned down safe too! I hope you have a video on getting your animals safe. God Bless and protect ya'll in Florida. I'm hoping nothing happens in South Carolina. I'm about 50 miles south of Charlotte, NC. I never want to see another hurricane!!
We are in Northern Florida and are getting everything ready. Might leave..might not. We have a well, and I am sure you do too. We have an old fashioned pitcher pump connected to it. All the water we could ever need if the power goes out. You might want to get one. Pretty inexpensive. Hope you and yours come through this without much damage!
Oh Becky please stay safe in the hurricane! Thankfully over here in Europe our storms are not near as bad as , but when I heard a hurricane was coming for Florida I immediately worried about you and your animals! Good luck!
Hi Becky! I'm definitely going to get one or two of those Aqua-Tainers, but it won't be for this hurricane - Not enough time. Honestly, here in Sanford, we board windows if we can, make sure stuff is put up from the yard, and bring the chickens in the garage (in a makeshift pen). They'll go back out once we're sure the backyard is secure for them. Other than that, we really don't do much. I made sure to buy a house with gas utilities, and if the electric is off long enough for the stuff in the freezer to thaw, I'll be canning meat and "stew" for a day or two. Y'all stay safe and dry!

I'm in Orlando. I got one case of water just in case,filled up every reusable water bottle i have, filled 2 2 liters, filled 2 gallon jugs of water. also bought gatorade, lemonade and a bunch of food. Raisins,oatmeal and the pumpkin are a good idea, might go grab some tomorrow!
I agree with having protein available in your preps. I stock lots of nuts, dried fruits, along with the raisins. We got some additional 5gal water bottles last week. You can always refill them with tap water before the storm so that you have plenty of water on hand and not have to deal with all those plastic 20oz bottles. I have a small hand pump that fits to the top of the bottle that I picked up at Walmart for $7, so even if power goes out we can still get water. Even though we are pretty far inland here in north ga, we expect a lot of rain, wind, power outages. Prayers for all the folks in florida, along the coast, and in the path of this monster storm! When we prepped for hurricanes while living in Norfolk VA I filled my washing machine with water and then unplugged it. We also kept candles and flashlights with extra batteries. Great choice in foods. I usually made granola and pumpkin breads or banana bread for cooked all the meat I had in the freezers and stuck them back in the freezer labeled for a quick pull de-thaw and eat.
Great tips and food ideas. I got Mac and cheese, soup, vegetarian chili etc.. and freezing bottles of water as a backup. Those containers are amazing!! A must buy

My bff is in Middleburg.As of now,she is staying.One of her horses is in her 30's and she's afraid she would fall getting in the horse trailer.Someone in Georgia with a horse farm told me they would take them in if needed.That was super nice.

I don't know where you are. I don't yet have goats or sheep, but I know in such a situation where evacuation is not likely, I'd bring them in with me, if we were to hunker down. I'd deal with poop afterwards. It will all depend on the lay of your land, however. I am not down there so my thoughts are with all of you, however you have to choose.
Taniko Kishimoto thank you I'm going to put 6 in the garage but I have 18 so maybe some in the laundry room but we will be in a closet already with a dog cat and rabbit. Those are the only two rooms in our house without windows. All I can do is cram them and pray.
Taniko Kishimoto Ok so with a little improvising we put the does in a trailer and bucks in a portable pen and crammed both the trailer and pen into our garage and that's the best we can do. If the garage holds they should be fine.
My daughter's family just went through Irma in Puerto Rico. They had a great selection of food like you do. I told her to buy for six weeks as they knew it would take months to regain power. I wish she had a year's supply.
I love those water containers!! We are near the Goethe Forest..not only hurricanes but fires also. Those water containers are amazing!! We had a hand pump added to our well last year just in time for the hurricane. Best investment ever!!

I live in the Mid West..(St Louis Missouri area) and we are no stranger to tornadoes. Often that means loss of power and questionable water supply. I often fill up many cleaned out gallon jugs..or bath tub. small portable LED flash lights are great,too. Sometimes Harbor freight will offer a free one in their ad..or free with a small purchase. I love my little LED flashlight. Also, I live where it get COLD in winter..a good wool blanket or sleeping bag inside a garbage bag to keep clean..is wonderful in case one gets stuck. granola bars,Cliff bars,protein bars
Something I have thought about are areas that are so often exposed to "unpleasant weather conditions" that many people have the same problems as in Sweden's suburbs, food and water for about 3 days and have difficulty in warming. When you live in the countryside or have a more traditional / old-fashioned background, you thought about it beforehand, and it takes care of everything for the winter and a bit more.

You just crack me up! I'm in Ohio and I just love your "non-alarmist" method of preparing. I live in an area where the electricity goes out all the time in small storms and big storms. So we have our own little ways to prepare for that kind of thing. I just love those big aqua jugs. I'll have to look into those.
i save and wash my soda and juice bottles out and just store water in those, i have 3 shelves in the garage with water, probably 30 gallons. and its free (well, basically). my wife was just telling me how the stores around here are out of water, people are getting upset (in NC), and all i could think was: do you not have a faucet. people are becoming truly helpless.
oh, we have one, and several sawyers etc. id rather be using the bottled tap first over flood waters :). my point was most people are throwing out their water bottles they could be using for free, and then going out and buying water. flouride water is better than flood water in an emergency :).
I pressure can my own canned goods. I recommend getting into canning, because you can make and store your own shelf stable meals. I do a beef or venison soup that is a full healthy meal itself, or you can pour over rice. I also pressure can my own meats, so I never have to worry about the stores shelves being empty of shelf stable meat. And the good thing about canning myself, is knowing that there are no artificial anything, added sugar, sodium or preservatives in it, and it lays almost forever as long as the seal is intact. We also get oatmeal in 50lb bags from the feed store, and store in huge drums. When push comes to shove, I would rather have more that's not quite as human Grade, than less that is. 50lb bags of oats is a lot more cost effective than little canisters. We also store a lot of powdered milk, and we powder our own eggs from our birds (chickens, ducks, turkeys, geese and guineas)
Kristen H My bff in Fl. was facing an incoming hurricane the next day once and when i called her she was canning pears like crazy.She said pears left on trees become missiles during a hurricane.Something to think about.
I made a big pot of ham and beans and also chili. I put it into freezer bowls and froze it. I lost power and was able to simply let it thaw naturally and re-heat in a pot on the coleman stove. Also made a big container full of tuna with apple and onion. I was able to make sandwiches for the guys who helped clean up the oak tree limbs after the storm.

At least you got the burbon right. I have lived thru a number if hurricanes in Texas on the gulf coast. 2 weeks out is a great idea but remember your kind of food to prep for is not necessarily for others. And don't forget the kiddos and the cats and dogs as well
Becky, this is my first hurricane in Puerto Rico as I moved from Illinois a year ago. One of the things I did was pop popcorn in my microwave and stored it in nice plastic gladbags before the hurricane and sure enough we were without electricity for a few days, however as of this date (Sept 15, 2017) there are many people without electricity and the weather has been really hot!
I'm in Wyoming so I've been getting sick from the smoke coming in from the north west and we've had earthquakes. Not very big but one of them was enough to knock some things off the walls. We're close to the epicenter so it's kind of freaky sometimes. I hope you stay safe Becky!:)
I bet that all the people making negative comments about her food choices have never been through a storm. I live in south FL, and after experiencing many hurricanes, including Andrew I can assure you that her choices are not bad at all. I do not eat fast or processed foods, but when you do not have running water or power, a high calorie meal that can be stored for months like a Pop Tart is an excellent choice. Also, you can just take it out of the box and eat it without having to wash dishes or use fuel to cook it. additionally, grocery stores tend to run out of food, so you have to buy whatever is left or available, thank you Becky for your videos, and I hope Irma did not cause too much damage to your property.
We're right here with you. Stay safe and dry. BTW, having a small charcoal grill and a Dutch Oven will help you cook a whole lot of stuff, bread, cookies, breakfasts with your eggs. Think about it. :)

I found this video interesting owing to its timing, because September is when I usually inventory my food pantry in order to restock it for the winter. Today, for example, I'm canning up 25 pounds of chicken breasts into 30 pint jars, as part of my Chicken Vegetable Soup. (Veggie portion to do next week.) I can understand the "junk food" in part, because in a survival situation you'll need access to calories. But what I really like was the oatmeal, as that is "complex carbs" which will fuel your metabolism all day. The protein, both powdered and as peanut butter and refried beans, are an excellent choice as they are the amino-acid precursors your brain needs to generate and balance its neurotransmitters. (Tip: If you have trouble falling asleep at night, toast up a single slice of white or wheat bread and smear on about four or five tablespoons of peanut butter. Eat this literally before you go to bed, and if needed wash it down with ONLY water. Nothing sugary, boozy, etc. The peanut butter will fuel your brain's nocturnal neuotransmitter production, while the simple carbs of the bread will trigger your brain's Dopamine Transport to allow the L-Tyrosine to cross the blood-brain barrier so it can help you fall asleep.) As regards to Refried Beans, I can buy 12 pounds of dried Pinto Beans for $12 and make up 24 quarts for my food pantry. Plus there are no chemicals, and the recipe I use is really quite good. Then it's onto my Chicken Veggie Soup, Chef John's Three-Bean Chili and maybe Roasted Sweet Potato and Black Bean Chili, and then a dozen quarts of Meatballs in Marinara Sauce (for Spaghetti and Meatballs). Finish up with Meatloaf and Potatoes, and Mushroom Gravy, a couple dozen pints of Pico de Gallo in wide-mouth pint jars, and misc bric-a-brac. Plus just plain veggies like potatoes, corn, carrots, etc., that I can find at our local Farmer's Market. I prefer to can my food myself rather than buy commercially-made stuff, in order to avoid all the chemicals and crap they put into food these days. I realize not everyone does this, but to each their own choice. Definitely a good call on buying those aqua-tainers that you can fill yourself. The fact more people don't think of that, but instead go for the "bottled water," tells me how mentally unprepared they are for a disaster. And, for that reason, the ammunition is especially a good call. All in all, I really liked your video. People need to think about this kind of prepping, and hopefully your video will jog their thinking.
My pleasure, Becky. I presently live in a two-bedroom apartment that, Lord willing, I will be exchanging for a rural homestead very soon (as within next Spring). But I'm saying this to inspire your viewers to try taking up pressure-canning into Mason jars, etc., and whatever they can do to become more "self-sufficient." That, and only that, is what will help them to be ready when the real disasters of life come barrelling down upon them, regardless of where they live. Don't depend upon the "government" to help you. Take it into your own hands. And that, IMO, is what real "homesteading" is really all about.

You could use a rain barrel because it will fill up quickly in a storm. Especially if you have a valley in your roof or gutters.

I don't know where you are. I don't yet have goats or sheep, but I know in such a situation where evacuation is not likely, I'd bring them in with me, if we were to hunker down. I'd deal with poop afterwards. It will all depend on the lay of your land, however. I am not down there so my thoughts are with all of you, however you have to choose.
Taniko Kishimoto thank you I'm going to put 6 in the garage but I have 18 so maybe some in the laundry room but we will be in a closet already with a dog cat and rabbit. Those are the only two rooms in our house without windows. All I can do is cram them and pray.
Taniko Kishimoto Ok so with a little improvising we put the does in a trailer and bucks in a portable pen and crammed both the trailer and pen into our garage and that's the best we can do. If the garage holds they should be fine.

My daughter's family just went through Irma in Puerto Rico. They had a great selection of food like you do. I told her to buy for six weeks as they knew it would take months to regain power. I wish she had a year's supply.

Becky i just fasted for a week. It was no problem only drank water. The first day and a half was the toughest, after that no prob. All just mental.
I love those water containers!! We are near the Goethe Forest..not only hurricanes but fires also. Those water containers are amazing!! We had a hand pump added to our well last year just in time for the hurricane. Best investment ever!!

I was one of the idgits with the little bottles of water. I have to get my water filter because those larger water containers make so much more sense. Also, I think the protein power was definite win as well. Thanks for sharing and being real about your choices. Janice
I live in the Mid West..(St Louis Missouri area) and we are no stranger to tornadoes. Often that means loss of power and questionable water supply. I often fill up many cleaned out gallon jugs..or bath tub. small portable LED flash lights are great,too. Sometimes Harbor freight will offer a free one in their ad..or free with a small purchase. I love my little LED flashlight. Also, I live where it get COLD in winter..a good wool blanket or sleeping bag inside a garbage bag to keep clean..is wonderful in case one gets stuck. granola bars,Cliff bars,protein bars

Something I have thought about are areas that are so often exposed to "unpleasant weather conditions" that many people have the same problems as in Sweden's suburbs, food and water for about 3 days and have difficulty in warming.
When you live in the countryside or have a more traditional / old-fashioned background, you thought about it beforehand, and it takes care of everything for the winter and a bit more.
I use old bags from the box o wine for water. They work great!

You just crack me up! I'm in Ohio and I just love your "non-alarmist" method of preparing. I live in an area where the electricity goes out all the time in small storms and big storms. So we have our own little ways to prepare for that kind of thing. I just love those big aqua jugs. I'll have to look into those.
i save and wash my soda and juice bottles out and just store water in those, i have 3 shelves in the garage with water, probably 30 gallons. and its free (well, basically). my wife was just telling me how the stores around here are out of water, people are getting upset (in NC), and all i could think was: do you not have a faucet. people are becoming truly helpless.

oh, we have one, and several sawyers etc. id rather be using the bottled tap first over flood waters :). my point was most people are throwing out their water bottles they could be using for free, and then going out and buying water. flouride water is better than flood water in an emergency :).

I pressure can my own canned goods. I recommend getting into canning, because you can make and store your own shelf stable meals. I do a beef or venison soup that is a full healthy meal itself, or you can pour over rice. I also pressure can my own meats, so I never have to worry about the stores shelves being empty of shelf stable meat. And the good thing about canning myself, is knowing that there are no artificial anything, added sugar, sodium or preservatives in it, and it lays almost forever as long as the seal is intact.
We also get oatmeal in 50lb bags from the feed store, and store in huge drums. When push comes to shove, I would rather have more that's not quite as human Grade, than less that is. 50lb bags of oats is a lot more cost effective than little canisters.
We also store a lot of powdered milk, and we powder our own eggs from our birds (chickens, ducks, turkeys, geese and guineas)

I made a big pot of ham and beans and also chili. I put it into freezer bowls and froze it. I lost power and was able to simply let it thaw naturally and re-heat in a pot on the coleman stove. Also made a big container full of tuna with apple and onion. I was able to make sandwiches for the guys who helped clean up the oak tree limbs after the storm.

At least you got the burbon right. I have lived thru a number if hurricanes in Texas on the gulf coast. 2 weeks out is a great idea but remember your kind of food to prep for is not necessarily for others. And don't forget the kiddos and the cats and dogs as well

Becky, this is my first hurricane in Puerto Rico as I moved from Illinois a year ago. One of the things I did was pop popcorn in my microwave and stored it in nice plastic gladbags before the hurricane and sure enough we were without electricity for a few days, however as of this date (Sept 15, 2017) there are many people without electricity and the weather has been really hot!

I'm in Wyoming so I've been getting sick from the smoke coming in from the north west and we've had earthquakes. Not very big but one of them was enough to knock some things off the walls. We're close to the epicenter so it's kind of freaky sometimes. I hope you stay safe Becky!:)
I bet that all the people making negative comments about her food choices have never been through a storm. I live in south FL, and after experiencing many hurricanes, including Andrew I can assure you that her choices are not bad at all. I do not eat fast or processed foods, but when you do not have running water or power, a high calorie meal that can be stored for months like a Pop Tart is an excellent choice. Also, you can just take it out of the box and eat it without having to wash dishes or use fuel to cook it. additionally, grocery stores tend to run out of food, so you have to buy whatever is left or available, thank you Becky for your videos, and I hope Irma did not cause too much damage to your property.
We're right here with you. Stay safe and dry. BTW, having a small charcoal grill and a Dutch Oven will help you cook a whole lot of stuff, bread, cookies, breakfasts with your eggs. Think about it. :)

Protein and water are most important. I keep lots of nuts, beans, canned meat and fish handy. I've got to look into those water containers.

I found this video interesting owing to its timing, because September is when I usually inventory my food pantry in order to restock it for the winter. Today, for example, I'm canning up 25 pounds of chicken breasts into 30 pint jars, as part of my Chicken Vegetable Soup. (Veggie portion to do next week.)
I can understand the "junk food" in part, because in a survival situation you'll need access to calories. But what I really like was the oatmeal, as that is "complex carbs" which will fuel your metabolism all day. The protein, both powdered and as peanut butter and refried beans, are an excellent choice as they are the amino-acid precursors your brain needs to generate and balance its neurotransmitters.
(Tip: If you have trouble falling asleep at night, toast up a single slice of white or wheat bread and smear on about four or five tablespoons of peanut butter. Eat this literally before you go to bed, and if needed wash it down with ONLY water. Nothing sugary, boozy, etc. The peanut butter will fuel your brain's nocturnal neuotransmitter production, while the simple carbs of the bread will trigger your brain's Dopamine Transport to allow the L-Tyrosine to cross the blood-brain barrier so it can help you fall asleep.)
As regards to Refried Beans, I can buy 12 pounds of dried Pinto Beans for $12 and make up 24 quarts for my food pantry. Plus there are no chemicals, and the recipe I use is really quite good.
Then it's onto my Chicken Veggie Soup, Chef John's Three-Bean Chili and maybe Roasted Sweet Potato and Black Bean Chili, and then a dozen quarts of Meatballs in Marinara Sauce (for Spaghetti and Meatballs). Finish up with Meatloaf and Potatoes, and Mushroom Gravy, a couple dozen pints of Pico de Gallo in wide-mouth pint jars, and misc bric-a-brac. Plus just plain veggies like potatoes, corn, carrots, etc., that I can find at our local Farmer's Market.
I prefer to can my food myself rather than buy commercially-made stuff, in order to avoid all the chemicals and crap they put into food these days. I realize not everyone does this, but to each their own choice.
Definitely a good call on buying those aqua-tainers that you can fill yourself. The fact more people don't think of that, but instead go for the "bottled water," tells me how mentally unprepared they are for a disaster. And, for that reason, the ammunition is especially a good call.
All in all, I really liked your video. People need to think about this kind of prepping, and hopefully your video will jog their thinking.

My pleasure, Becky. I presently live in a two-bedroom apartment that, Lord willing, I will be exchanging for a rural homestead very soon (as within next Spring). But I'm saying this to inspire your viewers to try taking up pressure-canning into Mason jars, etc., and whatever they can do to become more "self-sufficient." That, and only that, is what will help them to be ready when the real disasters of life come barrelling down upon them, regardless of where they live. Don't depend upon the "government" to help you. Take it into your own hands. And that, IMO, is what real "homesteading" is really all about.

Founded in my Christian faith, this includes growing my own food and canning/preserving it; how to create and use a root cellar; for the northern climates, the benefits of a wood-burning cookstove (my favorite being the Kitchen Queen 480), how to use it, and where to find/harvest your wood, and more. Even get into alternative/emergency power such as from solar panels; an explanation of "amateur radio" and why you want to be licensed and own the equipment, sewing your own clothes, making your own cheese (and Creme Fraiche), brewing your own beer, making your own bread from flour you grind yourself, etc., etc. And, of course, the responsible ownership of guns, their care, and how to reload your own ammo.
In short, like the Apostle Paul spoke of in II Cor 9, I want to be a "supplying joint" in the Body of Christ, sharing what I've learned in order to help the others coming up after me, with one of the objectives is to be "self-sufficient," so that no matter what may come our way, we'll have the tools and training to overcome it.
