The author gave him a very interesting point of view on the world, though. It resonates completely when you finish watching the Ten seaquel. I think Fukumoto writes some of the better characters. Both a loser who finds a lifeline at the last moment and it's not some deux ex machina, but also a genius who makes irrational decisions and doesn't care about winning or losing can be interesting.
Man...the Brave Man's Road arc was rough. All of the arcs were pretty tough but that one was just traumatising. I just wanted to give our poor boy Cryji a hug.

2:34 I cannot believe Masato Hagiwara is not a professional voice actor. This man is a MAHJONG PLAYER. He deserves awards for those 15 seconds alone. Edit: NVM, he does do a lot of acting. But, like, he's primarily a mahjong player.
What I really love about this series' progression is the fact that, even in the subsequent manga parts, while Kaiji certainly matures by all the events happened to him during Part 1 and 2... He still cries a lot. No matter how Kaiji got his soul and mind "hardened" by his previous gambles and mistakes, every single game he plays is so absurd, inhuman, nerve-breaking, stressing and mentally draining that sometimes all he can do is nothing but crying and screaming. And this makes Kaiji more human and compelling as a character.
That’s what makes him such a great character. He’s a diamond in the rough in the world he exists in. Not everyone would slash a throat for a few extra bucks, and yet he seems to be the only one that actually lives that philosophy. He’s definitely got integrity.
This is why I'll never hate on part 6, no matter how many dozens of chapters are just devoted to slice of life. Kaiji deserves it after all this. People who don't like current arc because they want more death gambles are no better than rich people in Brave Men Road chanting to push the participants
Spoilers: It reminds me of Tokyo Ghoul. Some people were upset because it had a happy ending. However, it was totally deserved taking into account all of the suffering Ken had to endure before reaching it.
