I REMEMBER THAT BIG BAND FOR THE CLOSING OF SUNDAY WITH SINATRA WITH THE LATE SID MARK WITH THAT SONG NEVER SAY GOODBYE STARTING IN 1987 WHICH LASTED UNTIL ABOUT 1993 ON THE FORMER WWDB. TWO YEARS AGO, SID MARK PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 88. THIS MONTH HE WOULD HAVE BEEN 90 YEARS OLD.

Haven't heard this is a while. Like with Herman, towards the end of their careers their respective ensembles began acquiring a more contemporary sound....something the great Maynard Ferguson had been doing for decades. This is a beautiful chart, man. Thanks for posting it :)

The drum break at 3:00 is fantastic and sounds very modern, it's like Buddy is channelling inspiration from a very different place. I have this album on vinyl and have always enjoyed listening to Buddy playing straight in this kind of groove.

A perfect sixteen bar break too.

Nothing wrong with it at all. Great playing from Buddy as usual.

The stories about this recording that I’ve heard.. let’s see.. they ditched a few of the charts that were so so bad and replaced them with stuff in the book.. the drums weren’t Buddy’s but a studio set that was pre-set for the engineers convenience (you can imagine how that went over).. apparently the band hadn’t seen the charts so they were sight read and then recorded (that’s why so much of it sounds stiff, rather than precise and tight).. I remember getting this fresh off the presses and thinking WTH? the story is in some respects better than the recording.. although there are the Mintzer charts that even here show great promise and stayed in the book for awhile. I give it a 7 it’s easy to dance to.. 😏
