i told myself "i'm gonna watch half of this then watch the rest later.", ended up watched till the end in one sitting. Everything she said is like a warm hug and Chris done an amazing job breaking topics into bits that we can process better as creatives. I also love the idea of the crosses between two fields to learn and understand more. Thank you so much to all of you
Now *this* is design therapy. Wesley and Chris make amazing hosts. I am really enjoying the dynamic between them. Such a fantastic episode. I love listening to people "outside" the design world bring their wisdom to our world. Well done Wesley! Thank you for contacting Chris.
This is my favorite interview ever. She is incredible, the knowledge she shares is unlike anyhting we get to hear on the design world, it has inmense value for just life in general. I hope you bring peole from other walks of life more often.
Wow. I love how broad your thinking is on this channel. You don't just teach people how to be great at design, but you also show everyone how to work on their mindset, to make sure that they stay happy and mentally stable while doing their job. This is so valuable! I'm so grateful for this channel and the whole community. Thank you, guys
Wow, this was really eye-opening! I loved her almost "outsider" perspective and how she still understood the fundamentals of savvy business communication. Have her back, please!
Oh my gosh that role play!!!...I find myself in such situations all the time with no appropriate reponse and find myself either being too afraid to lose the client and taking on the job at my cost to impress them OR bulking at the "...I just 3Xd what you originally asked for" convincing yself with "..it's atleast better than where he started." and "...it's extra money you didn't have before! which YOU NEED" I have been watching this channel for going on three years now, even bought a couple of the courses, but I must admit the money conversation is one of the hardest to have. When Chris addresses it, he makes it seem soooo simple...the way he pivots and brings the conversation towards value...it's suave. kudos. I just feel that sometimes it doesn't reflect the real life situations I find myself in. Where a client just wants to get work done and out of mistrust or some other reason may not be comfortable disclosing what value the work you are doing will bring to their business. (They may even simply not be able to foresee said value)...maybe I'm doing it wrong... Point is, that role play was the closest to my real life-situations I have seen on this channel. You just gave me the most ballistic script to use.... THANK YOU WESLEY! THANK YOU CHRIS! THANK YOU @thefutr! You guys are out here changing lives...wuh. Keep doing what you are doing! PS: Wesley, I think you need your own TH-cam channel. But also, please come back for more of these chats!
Intelligent, engaging and helpful. This goes on the re-watch playlist! I enjoy how she even calmed Chris down. He was so chill in this conversation. Looking forward to learning more from Wesley, Chris and crew.
I love the fact that heavy topics like sexism in client relationship is being discussed here. Like she said, having these kinda conversation on this channel is really important coz it can show this kinda behaviours are not ok and not to be tolerated. Loving the other topics too. Really informative and thoughtful. Cheers to the lady and the futur for producing this!
What a great surprise this was. I think Wesley and Chris are great together cause they complement eachother.. I agree with Melinda on her description of both. Chris is more aggressive but I love that he is that way.. and think it's part of his nature. He is also willing to take criticism. I have so much respect for him. Great topics..I was left wanting more... I can already picture a new series.
I can listen to her like forever and still would not find it enough, she is so so amazing!! Thank you @thefutur for bringing such valuable content to us, all your vedios are so helpful especially to creative people who self learn things all the time. In the creative industry, I believe you guys are doing the best job in the world and 1M is a huge number but not a big deal for an amazing team like yours. I see it happening soon. Sending loads of love and warm wishes from india! And this women is 🙌🏻 I am short of words !! We need more such people in the world🙆🏻😄 waiting for another one with her @chrisdo Thank you so much
1:11:00 How to deal with a difficult situation with someone - "Hey I'd like to have a tough conversation" - setting it up right away - "I'm feeling pretty anxious about having this conversation" - you're letting them know you're coming from a place that's hard for you - "What happened the other day, while you might not have meant anything by it..." - you're giving them the benefit of the doubt - "Actually did hurt my feelings or hit my ears in a funny way. This affected me for this reason. Is this something you're open to talking about with me" If you do it like this, you've done everything you could do. If they don't respond well, that's on them.
This stream was value beyond words! Love the dynamic between Chris and Wesley, pros in their element respectfully and openly bouncing ideas and sharing knowledge.
Such an amazing collab! Wesley is grounded, warm, calm and sharing some really valuable tips. Definitely looking forward to more collaborations like this one, either with Wesley or some other lovely people :)
Love this cross-industry conversation - we can learn so much from others who may in essence be working towards the same goal or trying to solve the same issues. Wesley is compelling to watch and learn from.
Love this discussion! I think part of finding your niche is about defining the values that a client has (respect, integrity and contributing to the world in a positive way). I can choose to serve businesses and clients who hold those values and choose to turn down the jobs from people that come across as sexist or racist because it isn't a sustainable way to work. I think as designers or creatives, we have a social responsibility to make these decisions from a conscious space.
I’m so glad I watched this video. Lately I’ve been feeling like what I do isn’t worth it because of Canva and the fact I haven’t had traditional schooling for graphic design.
Thank you, you did an awesome job by adding a level of humanity to the client by teaching us how we can elevate our empathy level so that we can better understand the client regardless of their perspective and then present our best self which may help them do the same. Not every client has the tools for communication.
1:13:03 This step by step method she described is amazing! I had so many situations where I used something similar and has worked well to talk about sexism and racism. I'm sure this can help a lot of people tackle difficult situations at their workplaces.
Psychology and design are my two favorite things! Thoroughly enjoyed this episode. I adore the way Wesley handled the boundaries role-playing with the client.
I will watch this episode many times. Wesley is amazing. Hugely important topics. It reminded me of the (also great) conversation with Hugh Barton. Thank you Chris!
Wow, looking for tips on how to deal with clients or business advice and totally being in awe with this conversation on relationships. This is one of the best events from the Futur. Thank you
Pricing design was the first video I watched around 2 years ago. Changed my mindset completely, all of course for the better. I have been able to scale my business both financially and the team has tripled in size!
love the format of this talk. Great interaction and feedback. Makes me in the audience feel engaged. Wow what a guest! I didn’t expect to get so much from an area that wasn’t design related. Thanks for making this connection. My brain hath grown 🙂
She really has some great content! Does she have a podcast or a TH-cam channel? I feel like I have learned a lot from this video that I want to implement on my own
More success.. More choice.. More successful people.. More choices in the world.. So many choices.. Are we going to be able to accept other people's choices or go into a trade war with them to bankrupt them of creative talent.. Reminds me of couples who don't talk to each other..
Love this. I've learned so much about life in general from this channel which in turn helps with my professional life. Love this holistic approach of improving in all facets of life, especially personal, to excel in one's career.
Great and interesting talk. What I would really, really like, though is to get the right levels for that Shure SM58 mic used by the crew and the audience ;) It's a good mic, standard for vocals, but often, it was quite hard to figure out what they were saying, unlike Wensley and Chris. Keep up the good work. Thanks.
@@dodifferent_co I know it's not always easy because people tend to move it around like crazy. Play as if it were a game: mic moves away from the mouth, fader goes up, mic moves towards the mouth, fader goes down. Just kidding :P
Wesley did an amazing job managing the conversation in the role play. I disagree that she spoke like a designer and it is exactly why she excelled in the conversation. The typical designer says hire me, I do great work and usually stumbles when the customer objects to the price. Wesley says, hire me because I will help you reach your objective. With me, you are paying for my thinking which has been obtained from years of schooling. Let’s collaborate to create something unique. She is great at processing the information the customer is giving her and mirroring back the concerns and wants of the client. She focuses on the transformation. Where are you now and where do you want to go? This role-play has been more successful than all the previous role-plays with designers including Melinda’s role plays. I also disagree with Melindas assessment of Chris Do. Chris, did you upset Melinda? Sounds like she was trying to get revenge by poking at your ego.
Just observe their feet - look at Wesley's and look at Chirs's. Chris does a lot of talking with his feet in this video! 😉 It is a great video, I liked the contrast between you to guys. Wesley focused on production cost, and she began defending the price. Chris would go back to the value conversation and help the client see how much value can be created. Wesley did a good job standing her ground. I felt my energy getting angrier and angrier with Chris. LOL @47:22
I really like this combination of in depth lookig at core skills and self development. This gave me alote of insight and tools for improving myself within situations in general. Much much gratitude and love from the Netherlands !
I'm almost at the 1 hour mark and I like Wesley's calm demeanor. However, I've also heard the case for initially mirroring someone's speed and intensity...as long as they're not angry to build rapport. Any thoughts on this, because when I'm with friends getting excited in conversation, I talk faster without even realising. So is being calm just going to zap the excitement of the conversation sometimes?
Gottman is big... I just found this note on my computer from 2010 and could work like I did to one of Chris Do's role plays using "Never Split the Difference". I wonder if it's possible to make a video that analyzes debates like John Gottman analyzes couple's conversations in conflict. Gottman, a psychologist can predict with 95% accuracy whether a couple will be together in 15 years just by watching an hour of their interaction. It's called "Thin-Slicing" in Malcolm Gladwell's bestseller "Blink".
1:08:31 Wesley mentions the book "Hold me tight". I reached out to Sue's team and Dr Sue Johnson generously reduced the price of their online video course for couples holdmetightonline.com
She's great. Pls invite her back for more talks.
I really like this lady. Warm, kind, caring and confident. Please bring more people like her to the show.

How to deal with a difficult situation with someone
- "Hey I'd like to have a tough conversation" - setting it up right away
- "I'm feeling pretty anxious about having this conversation" - you're letting them know you're coming from a place that's hard for you
- "What happened the other day, while you might not have meant anything by it..." - you're giving them the benefit of the doubt
- "Actually did hurt my feelings or hit my ears in a funny way. This affected me for this reason. Is this something you're open to talking about with me"

This was crazyyyy good! I've practically watched all your videos and this was gold! Awesome collaboration.
she needs her own youtube channel! amazing content! need more like this!

I got so much from this. What a fantastic talk! Thank you for taking the time. I am so inspired because of this :-)
It was such a treat watching this in person, thank you for having me!
Randy Lewis glad you come out.
Pricing design was the first video I watched around 2 years ago. Changed my mindset completely, all of course for the better. I have been able to scale my business both financially and the team has tripled in size!
We need more people like her. If I knew of more people like her, I would feel 10x better already.
If she is ever back, I will be sure to watch! Thank you so so much for all of this!

This was such a fascinating conversation. I really appreciate all the open handed jems of wisdom that Futur drops
Please, convert this livestream into a podcast episode!
THIS is incredibly valuable insight !

more of this kind of talks. She is great. love that she brings a non-designer POV.
She really has some great content! Does she have a podcast or a TH-cam channel? I feel like I have learned a lot from this video that I want to implement on my own
"I hate myself watching something I could have done better and is only way" to improvement - oh men, am practising!
thank you so much for this stream, so valuable. Wesley is so kind and mindful
Thank you for everything you and your team are doing!
One of the best videos yet!!!
Very insightful! Thank you guys!
Really love this session!!! 💓💓💓

I liked the video before i have even watched.
HAHAHA!
Proof that you guys put out good content for us. Thank You

hahaha Melinda nailed the description of Chris Do.
Wesley is like the zen, insightful version of Jan from The Office.
This is the comparison I didn't know I needed. I love this haha
Very ironic that I got a Fivrr ad for cheap designers in 24 hours while watching this awesome show about creating real value and charging more. LOL
