I see that there are some comments about the runway not being absolutely level and, no doubt, the camera exaggerates the undulations. The original Elmdon Airport (by which name I knew it as a boy) was opened just before WWII. The laying of the present runway may go back to wartime, when that would have been considered level enough - it's no problem, even now. So why do our American cousins want their runways perfectly level? They seem to get particularly worried about their B-52s landing at RAF Fairford, where the runway is not perfectly level - it never bothered Concorde.
I heard that roar of accomplishment at the end. All those jet fighters zooming around like young cats like to zoom. Congratulations. Your awesome skills have been put to the test once again.
I remember being on a plane to Germany when I was 8, with my mom and brothers. We got into a storm halfway in the flight, I thought we were going to die! I cried hysterically. My mom was at a loss for how to comfort me. That plane was all over the place, we had to seat belt in and everyone was deathly quiet. We were bumping so hard our butts would've left the seats had it not been for the belts. I thought I would throw up!! Watching it from the outside is interesting to me, kind of comforting to me for some reason. To know that the plane can take that kind of wind shear is fantastic.
YEEEE IKES . Pilots with their hands full . I don't fly , 3 times in my life , but being a passenger during the landing under those conditions , hmmmmm , might be a little unnerving . Thanks for another adventure , Dafydd .
I was on the Jet 2 aircraft from Palma that day and it was pretty scary at times.People gripping onto the bars in fear.Everyone applauded the pilot when he landed and rightly so.Even a member of the cabin crew said it was scary!
I remember coming into Norwich in a Fokker 50 during a storm. It felt like the pilot was trying to decide which of 3 runways to land on.....we were all over the place. He got us down without a go-around though. I loved it 😅
Thank you and appreciate you asking if you can use my content. To create this video I had to take a day off from my regular day job, a three hundred mile round trip to Birmingham airport without mentioning the countless costs of constantly renewing and upgrading my camera/computer equipment. I should also mention the countless trips I make to various locations and go home with no content after no shows. I would be pressing the self destruct button if I was to allow every armchair photographer to select all the best bits and use them to their advantage. However all is not lost, you are very welcome to come and join me on a regular low level military aviation chase if you like? With all going to plan over a five day hunt subject to weather and aircraft turning up etc then you may gain enough material to make a 3 minute video. That’s the best I can offer on this occasion my friend.
White knuckle rides.....no thanks! More power Scotty were going around and try again. Did you see the flex in those wings. I have seen airliners in the Boeing LB plant suspend the entire aircraft by the wings....the flex is mind bending or wing bending however you want to state it. Nasty day out there hey Dafydd? Thanks for getting wet for us!
Thanks for your feedback. I’m using a Sony ax53 here which has an incredible stabilisation feature. Sadly it only shoots 4K at 30 fps. I’ve tried the Panasonic x1500 which is 4K 79 fps but the stabilisation facility can’t live with the Sony. I’ll keep looking and thanks for watching
What amazing crews to land in those conditions. A lot of cold blood. Impressive that after the jolts of the sequence that starts at 3:36 the pilot has landed. Masters. Excellent video! Thanks for sharing. I just watched your channel, it's amazing. Let's follow you. Thanks a lot!
And can I add a bit of history about the airport? As RAF Elmdon during WWII, it was used to fly to fly out newly-built Lancaster and Stirling bombers. They were not actually built there, but were transported there by road from the Austin works at Longbridge, having had their wings removed, to be reassembled at Elmdon. My late mother-in-law used to tell us that, as a young woman, she sewed little blackout curtains for the windows of the Lancasters, at or near Elmdon.
@@DafyddPhillips I took my first ever flight out of Elmdon: it was on a BEA Viscount and I think it was the first flight of the day. I had been sent on an open day visit to NPL at Glasgow by Rolls-Royce. Once in the air, there was an announcement: "Would the passenger bound for Edinburgh, please make himself known to a member of the crew?" There was huge guffaw the length of the plane.
Has no-one thought to check the runway numbers at BHX? They are 15 and 33, so the runway is almost at right angles to the prevailing wind. A typical south-westerly gale coming through is bound to result in a challenging crosswind landing. PS I did live under the flightpath into Runway 33 for some years.
A couple of years ago we were flying into Tamp FL airport. The pilot indicated the flight would be very smooth but there would be turbulence coming into Tampa. And man....I must be getting old... Cause I BROKE A DAMN SWEAT.....slight turbulence my foot...
You know that there is a strong cross wind, when you are sitting in a row 2 window seat and you can see the whole length of the runway 400m from touchdown. 😨
Oh dear, the gusts where pretty sharp as she came to touch down. I saw on the flight radar that you had circle over the airport while other in the queue came in. I would never doubt the ability of these pilots, you are safe!!
Most of a pilot's job is boring, routine....the reason they get paid bit bucks is the skill required to handle the few times they have to land sideways......
Ooof, reminds me of traveling with Widerøe, then flying the Dash8 along the western coast of Norway. You won't believe where some of those airports are!

Massive respect to those pilot’s and a great capture of their predicament
Amazes me how these pilots can land at all during strong winds like that. Ty for the clip enjoyed it Dafydd 😊👍
Those pilots must have nerves of steel. They deserve every bit of their pay!

Get the USNavy pilots to land the 52s for them…lol
Nice change of pace. Well done Mr.Phillips! Excellent work as usual!
She is a woman or female flyer & very gifted.
That’s got to be terrifying being a passenger and thinking you’re about to land but then do a go-around. 😮
Only if you're of a really nervous disposition.
Excellent as always Dafydd. Can’t help but feel for the passengers. I know that feeling. But well captured!
Many thanks mark. They are all in good hands but I still wouldn’t like to be amongst them. 🤮🤠👍

The planes are engineered so well with great pilots flying them. I’m never in doubt when flying
Thanks for watching
Those pilots knew what they were doing. Very very nice. Please keep coming out with more vlogs!!
Talented guys they are.
Appreciate watching, some different uploads from Greece coming soon! 🇬🇷✈️
@@DafyddPhillips 😀sounds good, definitely looking forward.

Wow ! Great capture my friend 🙂 I was at Gatwick yesterday. It was a horrible weather.

Top man great video. I thought the first one the pilot had been at the duty free. 😂
Just another day of flying... Always loved crosswind landings
Top video!! Can't believe the shape on that runway though lol
What a roller coaster
wow... love watching pros fly. thanks!
Awesome to have a video about it from you too! Great filming!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you.
Great video! Some fantastic landings there. Good to see some commercial aircraft.
Thank you, I never miss an opportunity to capture crosswind landings. The pilots earn they’re money and do a grand job.
@@DafyddPhillips ah me to I love to see crosswind landings
Fantastic footage, thanks for the upload
Appreciate you watching it Kevin

Stunning capture! May I feature this first go around in one of my next episodes? Of course with a link back to your original video. Cheers!

Beautiful capturing ❤well done buddy 👏
Thank you.
Brutal… can almost hear the alarms going off in the cockpit!
There are no alarms in the cockpit other than windshear alert, this probably didn’t trigger that.

Awesome job

That's quite an undulating landing strip. Strange.
Peter Riis -if you want a real undulating runway try the Fareo Islands -it is like something you would see at a fairground with rises and falls .
2nd plane pilot nailed it 😎
Big jets are awesome. I would love to see just how manoeuvreble they can be, without civilian passengers of course. Could they be barrel rolled?
Thats when they earn their wages, that looked scary for the passengers
Awesome videos 🙌🏻
Pay good money at Blackpool for rides like that😊

The first go around was a female pilot andy 🤣. Did you manage to get to an airport? Was crazy in LHR
@@DafyddPhillips I would have liked to but getting time off work is currently a bit of a problem. Another one for my to do list 👍🤞
one of those days where the cockpit crew earn their wages!
Some were having so much fun they didn't want it to end and went around for another go. 😆
Mad skills
Is wind shear felt only at low altitudes and why so often at airfields?
Where do you park when viewing the northerly approach?
I parked in clock lane. I used to park on the verge on the main road but now there are roadworks ongoing
@@DafyddPhillips Thanks very much. Double yellows all down there so always afraid of getting booked.
